They serve no purpose.
Most of the top 50 in solo Q are people who play 1 game every 5 days to keep their rating. They benefit massively from the lack of permanent decay. By actually playing 5/6 games a day you end up being penalized.
Who just plays 1 game in a day unless they are trying to exploit the leaderboards? If I play then its at least for a few games. Logging on and doing 1 game every 3/4 days (at most) is just lame and means the leaderboards are a joke.
As far as team q is concerned the leaderboards again have a negative impact. The same decay problems exist. People whose self worth is tied to their GW2 rating will get on their second account to play with “pugs”. This is so bad for the game. Before leaderboards people were less kitteny about who they played with. Many decent PUG groups used to form in the heart of the mists (this is impossible now as all the “better” players have just gone lame-mode and never pug).
So this makes team queue totally miserable. You either get farmed by meta set ups, or you just smash total newbs. There is very little in between. It didn’t used to be like this before leaderboards. You used to have fun games between pugs. Fun games between duo/trio queues. And it was just really fun. Now duo queuing is so miserable because its just getting farmed or farming clowns.
Solution: Get rid of leaderboards but give people a personal rating which they can view and work on themselves.
Leaderboards killed this game. It is ridiculous people care so much about them given the obvious fact that they mean nothing at all. People know who are good players and who aren’t. Good teams prove themselves in tournaments and not farming PUGs. Half of the top 50 of solo Q for example are good players, but half are just exploiting newbies. Please get rid of leaderboards. Who agrees?
I would like a MMR system similar to dota. It scales with how active the player base is and prevent users from getting too far from those with lower MMR.
As they stand the leaderboards are something which simply causes frustration. Personally I don’t think this game should have a rated solo queue at all, only team queue.
Probably ezier to remove everything and just have hotjoins.
Rewards for leaderboard, seasonal resets like every 2 month, so no decay issue. Would be way more representative than ToL where you can get a legendary by winning 3 games vs a top team :x
Ya i agree with blackjack,
They should focus more on stuff that is always going on and always accessable for everyone. Which would make it worth to play every day.
Currently you can only play train for the next tournement where only the top 0.1% of the game can actually get something :<
PvP isn’t rewarding in anyway. All we have is PvE rewards (1000 times the same skin) or very little money. And a leaderboard which works bad….
I wonder how many games you need to win in SoloQ to farm a legendary by PvP only.

Lets say your legendary is 3000g
Lets say you get 20s each soloQ(thats the normal money+reward track)
3000 00/20
Thats 15000 games of SoloQ for a legendary. Well if someone after 2 years could show me a picture of playing 15000 games i would be very impressed
Lets say your game average = 8 minutes
means 2000 hours of NONSTOP soloQ for a legendary, man life as a gw2 pvp sucks ^^

I figured that out last year. Since I don’t PvP anymore I guess I will share my findings on how to min-max the soloq leaderboards.
1) Only play 1-2 matches every few days. The more you play the less rating you will gain per match due to decreased glicko volatility. Also it doesn’t seem to interact with rating decay properly.
2) Only play during prime time. People at this time have more rating relative to their skill. I am not sure why.
My rank stopped bouncing from 1000-500 and went up to 40 before I got tired. I realized this was how there were so many bad players with higher rank.
Then I stopped playing when I realized I got better matches this way than a game of who can carry noobs the hardest.
I made a thread complaining about the glicko volatility setting. In this game it is set way too high. I can’t count the number of times that I got stomped just to see I had a bunch of team mates with only 20 games that were ranked top 20.

There is still a decay issue for 2 months worth of play though because playing seems to not be rewarded with higher ratings. The only way to maintain a high rating is to win 75% of your matches.
Most people at the top of the ladder don’t afk for 3 months and then come back. Instead they get a lucky run of wins and then play once every 5/7 days. Win or lose it doesn’t matter because those who play actively will always trend lower. It is an unfortunate situation.
The whole rating system should be reworked to reward playing, irrespective of decay. When you win a game you should gain 10% more rating than you would of lost for losing an identical situation in the reverse (if this makes sense). To do this I would include a +10% modifier to when wins are rewarded with improved rating.
So when you win your rating becomes: Old rating + (current rating change from winning * 1.1)
When you lose your rating becomes: Old rating – current rating change.
Where current rating change is how the system currently works when you win or lose.
Playing must be rewarded if the game is to generate a bigger population.
