[Poll] State of GW2 "E-Sports"
A year ago, I wager there probably would have been only two responses, bad or abysmal.
A year ago, I would have voted average. It wasn’t amazing, but still interesting to watch for people who played PvP.
Today it’s abysmal. HoT power creep is ridiculous and killed diversity. It’s the same 6 HoT builds over and over, and they practically play themselves. Why bother watching top players?
Everyone knows this, so why discuss it?
AN doesn’t know this, or is trying to ignore the facts.
If you have not already, maybe you should also post the poll in GW2 reddit. It would increase the sample size.

We’ll see what they do for season 3. Even if they just started taking pvp into account when tweaking character classes, it would be a huge step forwards to where we’ve been post – HoT.
We’re still being told ‘The balance team and the PvP team are two separate teams’ , like the lack of apparent design direction with regards to PvP is explainable and excusable.
The truth is, this design philosophy of game-mode convergence has been cooked up in a boardroom, and forced on the competitive game despite the fact that it’s clearly not improving gameplay at a competitive level.
DS 2 was just announced as being the best selling game last month. Lets stop kidding ourselves that dumbing the game down to the point that, as you said, “it plays itself” is excusable for some abstract commercial reasons.
There are people in this community who know your game very well, and are prepared to work with you collaboratively for free to improve it. We know what classes have been most enjoyed by the community over the last 3 years – bringing those back alone would be a huge step forwards.
Despite not playing this much any more, I’m still very passionate about Gw2. There needs to be some directional changes though.

Gw2 won’t ever have esports. The time where every competitive player started is when the game launched. We had 400 fully populated (20 ppl each) hotjoins on each of servers. (EU/NA). But Anet blew it. They didn’t support competitive at all until 1,5 years later when everyone left already. No one is coming back. No one is giving Esports another chance. Player base will never be there. Anet served themselves justice. What is happening now with the pro league is of course a joke to everyone from the inside and the outside. You don’t even have 4 competitive teams and you’re making an 8 team league. This is benny hill video game edition.
I voted bad: Poor balance, no build diversity, no core specs in the ESL’s, low viewership.
I want GW2 esports to be the real deal, but it never will be as long as there continues to be no dedicated PvP balance team.
:(
Pretty much this.
Meta shifts are underwhelming as it changes yes, but still keeps 6 same classes in meta, while remaining 3 (Thief, Warrior, Guardian) struggle to keep it together.
Lack of build diversity, though I believe that it’s just people who mindlessly roll meta instead of making something to fit their own playstyle and still be viable.
For exmaple myself, I made a build on my Guardian main that is about being quite tanky, dish out damage and give some team support (blocks and stab) while throwing CC here and there. If I have a good backup, with well placed shield of courage I can save a team fight, but it requires much more skill to time it right if comparing other meta builds that work that way.
So as for build diversity I’ll keep it 50/50, people are free to mess around with traits but only if they stop following meta builds.
The bugs, the game is still entertaining but the bugs are ruining it for everyone… Like Argi said, a rematch was needed and the bugs have to be a dressed. … Since the patch my mouse dc all the time, I can’t play a game without sync’ing off. And the immobility bugs or the jump at the end of every bull charge glitch. .. and more.

Anet was done as was instructed
When teams from LoL-Smite came here , spouting left and right (along with the GW1 vets) that balance didnt matter , and as: ‘’long as there are altheltes , ppl will flock in the stadium’’ , everything was ’’OK’’ in their rulebook
(only Imaqtpie with his 420 blazing personality was cool) .
When they returned in Lol because they knew , that even if they dont win any prize tournament , they can get cash from high vewership , they they flocked back in silence
In February-March 2013 , there was some Tournaments with 10k prize money (i think)
Even Drybear , he made a single video at the Januaray 2013 with a Thief spamming 22222+haste , where it could crit for 30% of your hp nonstop every 0,3 sec +gapcloser and quitted 25 days later ….
And look on that first-marked-target mofo where is he now …
(While 1 month later ’’Jumper’’ used a combo off D/D 1-shot backstab spec + Haste/spamm Heartseeker , or Haste/ spammDancing Dagger (3.300 crit in that Clocktower Map))

Voted abysmal because there was no “sad joke of wasted potential and terrible decision making” option.
If you have not already, maybe you should also post the poll in GW2 reddit. It would increase the sample size.
Could you do me a favor and go ahead and do this? I’ve posted a few times on reddit to garner more responses for my balance suggestions and I think I got blocked lol.
If it was relative to other games I would have given it a higher grade, but the whole concept is stupid. The ESL system is so easy to cheat at I don’t see how people take it seriously.
I think it was a wasted effort. Its like they got together and brainstormed over what to do with the game. They came up with a bunch of ideas and then only used the bad ones.
PS: A-net, just watch how Overwatch becomes a super successful esport without even trying. Then ask yourselves why. Hint: If you build it they will come

Abysmal:
1. no build diversity
2. balance gap between core and elite is huge. balance gap between “meta” and not meta is huge.
3. promotion of casual / passive / dull / easy gameplay. not much skill needed. skilled classes arent really rewarded rather punished. this ends up in being very boring and narrow minded combat system.
sorry to say but pure disgrace to a game which was somewhat skillful and fun in the past. wasn’t very skillful in the past either but it had huge potential for the future projects and i was quite hopeful and sure HoT will make it even better.. sadly – HoT came out and it went even further into a land of “casual/simple/passive”.
#dyingbreed
my rating for GW2 SPvP = Average, I see the games potential it just needs a lot of work, less insane heals, less insta gib dmg, less passive traits, less free boons, a tad less instant skills which are game changing, then everyone needs a few skills to avoid damage dealt.
And IMO condition dmg stat should be removed, conditions shouldn’t scale with any stats and should only be icing on the cake, maybe mainly attached to burst skills which are potentially avoidable via reacting? And not so freely available, at least not the ones that deal dmg.

Hopefully they listen to their polls. I would rather not see repeats of other dying games. Vindictus for example added jumping and removed it against many players wishes. They lost allot of people including me. I hope the balance team can rise above their own groupthink and recognize what needs to be done.

This might help you.
I voted bad. Not because of the game. It’s the “pro’s”. They are vain, whiney children with absolutely no respect for anything. They disgust me.
I, in no way, want to bash GW2, I’ve spent a lot of time with it, but the game just isn’t made for viewership in mind. I made a post recently about conditions, following combat and good plays is very difficult from a viewership point of view. Spell effects are everywhere, balance is wonky, and they have a very limited amount of game modes (wtb 2v2/3v3) and the one that is championed really isn’t that fun to watch (in my opinion) and forces close quarter fighting which messes with balance in a way it shouldn’t. The list goes on, but honestly, they should really take a step back and look at cleaning up combat if they expect to have people want to watch it.
Overall though, I think it’s too late, probably not worth the effort.
Warlord Sikari (80 Scrapper)
I’ve never been a fan of watching others playing video games. Much rather play the game myself.
Also, I’m not sure on this but the game population seems to be dwindling across the board. I mean it’s been out 4 years now and we had a solid year with like no updates.
I’ve also noticed a decline in active pvp servers which is strange because this is summer.
Another thing I want to throw out there regarding E-sport, aside from how good a game is to watch. (Which to reiterate GW2 is very much lacking in this area, I can’t stress that enough. Not to say you can’t enjoy it, but the masses do not.)
Is accessibility.
With a game this poorly optimized, and very CPU dependent when majority of gamers even with laptops, have relatively strong GPU setups it creates a significant divide for the entry level when one group gets flawless 60+ FPS and the other struggles to get 30 being unable to take advantage of their setups that typically work fine for many other E-sport like games, and this is vastly important for a game that is (supposedly) based on tells and evade frames.
Players are more invested if they can pick up and play and have it feel good. Which is why I personally do enjoy GW2 even if I still find it dull to watch. But if to many players cannot enjoy the game because of such limitations, that’s a large portion of potential views being lost.
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”
Anyone watch yesterday? Just horribly one-sided games where the biggest thing that happened was that someone brought a warrior. Casting was awful too imo.
I’d really love to see gw2 make it as an esport but this is just ridiculous – specs, classes always the same. And boring.
I watched for like 5 minutes and saw somebody got saved twice by his passive defenses. Passive defenses is the thing that kills this game mode.
The rules must not keep changing. Similar to how there’s pro basketball, and how successful LoL / Starcraft have become, the rules stay the same and don’t change much (well at least not TOO much to the degree players need to relearn the sport). Unfortunately, as long as AN continue to adopt the absurd “shake up the meta” approach in balancing, while simultaneously changing multiple aspects of game mechanics over the span of 3+ years, GW2 will never be ready for “E-Sports”. The reason being is because it takes time for players to become masters of their art. If the rules keep changing, it breaks the momentum for “pro league” players and ruins everything “E-sport” (god I hate that word. I also hate “baseline”, “meta”, “QoL”, and the other nonsense lip service AN tends to spew out)
@ Daishi, accessibility wise, AN has taken strides to improve this but it’s still at an unacceptable level. (that is, all they did was make it F2P). There is actually quite a large paywall in place- HOT specializations. Without them, you can kiss any chance you have in competitive PvP in GW2. That’s not my definition of accessibility.
GW2 is also a terrible game to spectate. Try asking someone who’s never seen GW2 before to sit down and watch a match. It’s like watching monkeys flinging poo everywhere. No way to anticipate player actions, a kitten load of passive gameplay in the form of conditions, boons, traits etc, and it’s a pain in the kitten to watch a whole match as the camera only focuses on one player. Too much is happening on the screen, yet not enough information is given to the viewer in spectator mode. This problem is exemplified by the terrible announcers that don’t even give play-by-play breakdowns of the “professional” players. Like I said- its just monkeys flinging poo at each other.
Going beyond this- the matches are not intense from the teams perspective. No commands. No communication, or play-by-play requests (like requesting a water field, etc). There is a lot of potential to be had in zerg v zerg fights, yet AN continues to ignore the potential.

Even then though, it’s still an unrefined mess that’s difficult to follow for a spectator. (note to AN: This is not a suggestion to molest WvW fights.)

Really, it just boils down to dropping the negative marketing “gw2 esports” is garnering. It’s a failed venture, and AN jumped on that boat before it was ready. Stop funding “E-Sports” and reallocate the budget to getting the game ready for such a thing, because the game at its current state is not ready.

Poor viewer numbers today, started at under 1000 only got to 1400 in about the 2nd last match.
