PvP Profession "Role" help
I don’t know why, but threads like these make me happy. Can’t help though i don’t really play those classes.
Ele can dps, support, heal, roam and tank,. They have very low HP and 20 weapon skills to use, so it does require a decent amount of time to become good at it, but one you are good it’s extremely strong and the most mobile class.
Mesmer can dps, tank and portal (single biggest skill in tPvP). A few very viable builds which fit multiple roles, wont take as much practise as ele to become good given how naturally strong they are at everything. And again Portal…
Necro can tank and transfer conditions. There’s only really 1 way to build necros atm, and that is for conditions damage and necro’s only dps’ing conditions are bleed and some poison so little variety in that. Given that it’s almost all condi damage it’s fairly easy to counter but devastating if not countered.
Now which would be more crucial to a team or should I say more “sought after”? Would that depend on the other professions that are on the team? Or for example, are people always looking for a really good ele, or really good mesmer, etc.? I honestly like all 3 classes, but I want to pick one and be really good at it.
Mesmer is without a doubt needed in pretty much every team, because of portal, it’s also the easiest of the 3 light armor classes. Ele will fit in most line ups, in a kind of support dps/roaming or pure healing support role. Necro is more of a niche class and isn’t always going to be wanted, although in certain situations they are very effective.
Dumb Question Alert: What’s the “best” way that most mesmers use the portal? Do they put it on one node and let team port back to it to keep the other team from back capping or what? I like mesmer in PvP, but I was leveling up just getting a feel for the class and seemed in PvE and PvP both that they had little survivability. May just be me though…
Portal is used for a whole bunch of stuff. Mesmers will usually go for your base points then roam to mid with portal, then go back to stop back capping as you said. But it’s also used to quickly move multiple players between points to burst down the bunker as quickly as possible. Mesmers can take down the gate on foefire, then set up portal from mid to the lord, then get the whole team tp’ed for a 2-3sec lord kill. Ofc portal mesmer on your treb in khylo is well known and will likely get nerfed soon.
Mesmers are more then likely the weakest PvE profession, but in PvP it’s a completely different story. They can survive extremely well with stealths and all kinds of diversion tactics and invulnerability skills. With any class, you will need to put time in to be able to get the bets out of it.
Okay, good to know. I was wondering about the PvE part, since I didn’t want to just go straight in to PvP with all of the skills. I wanted to level a bit PvE and get used to adding skills a little at a time, but found the class survivability was a bit low. But, I guess that will get better as I learn the class also. Thanks for all the help!!!
One last question that I just thought about….Any crafting recommendations for Mesmer? I was thinking tailoring and jeweler, but not sure if that’s best or not…

You’re not limited to 2 professions. You can only have two active at any time, but if you want to, you can pay to choose a new profession, and if you want to switch back to the one you dropped, you get it back at whatever level you left it.
Tailoring and Jeweler are fine. It’s not really like some other games where you get big advantages for choosing certain professions. You mostly just get the convenience of crafting your own gear rather than finding someone else to craft it for you, or just buying it off the trading post.
Elementalists will almost always have support for their teammates due to the massive amount of buffs they put on their mates with the mandatory trait in the arcana line. They can also throw out huge amounts of healing and condition removal. With d/d they are extremely mobile and tanky to top it off if you know how to switch weapons before games. The only department they are really lacking on is burst damage, under best circumstances you will do about 8k on a burst. But the steady damage is nice.
So yeah, if you are looking for a jack of all trades profession, take to the elementalist.
I think I’m leaning towards Mesmer or Elementalist, but up in the air between those 2. Which of the 2 are teams always looking for a “good” of? (Like Teams want a good mesmer or teams need a good ele) I know Ele’s seem to be harder to play from what I’ve read, but are they harder to come by when forming teams, so teams end up making do with other classes?

If portal can take you from mid to lord, jesus that is way OP. That needs fixing. I didnt realise the range it has.
