One of the things I’ve always liked about PvP is the fact that everyone is on an even ground. Unfortunately, with the latest updates that is no longer completely true – we now have direct power upgrades in PvP, and ones gained primarily through PvE at that.

I’m talking about the trait unlocks. In order to unlock a Grandmaster Major trait, you either have to win a PvE boss battle, or pay 3 gold and 20 skill points, or smaller sums for lesser traits. This is a problem: not for me, since being an old player I have most of the traits unlocked and the resources to buy my way through the few remaining ones, but for new players who have a massive amount of traits to grind through and no gold to make it easy.

As far as I’m concerned that is a MASSIVE problem: new players have to do PvE in order to be effective in PvP.

What really confuses me is the fact that I haven’t seen any threads about this anywhere. Have I missed something important? From what I can tell, there should be angry mobs demanding justive everywhere. Is everyone really okay with this?

There are threads that address this issue.
Keep in mind that it is MUCH easier to make gold now that it was a year ago.
Therefore getting the gold is for the trait unlocks is rather easy.

The new traits unfortunately suffer from the megaserver system in a way that almost all temple events you can do for them (instead of buying the trait) are constantly not available.

Note: The intention of purchasing the new traits is to get pvpers to try some pve, but I disagree with this decision by Anet and think all traits should immediately be free for pvp. To me, it feels a bit like the grindy approach to ascended gear.

TL;DR: There are threads, but why bother? Nothing is gonna change anyhow. /fatalism

Care to link me to some of them? I couldn’t find any of them, hence my confusion.

Trying to force PvPers to do PvE like that is the worst possible way to get PvPers interested in PvE. If I was a new player, I’d hate every second of it until I had all the traits I needed.

I also agree that this is an issue. I have a few toons that I created to do PvP. These toons are lvl 2-15, hence very few or no skill points… I can get skill points and gold by doing PvP, but I’m not having any traits available to make me even remotely viable in hot-joins. Those skill points and levels can I gain from doing reward tracks, which in turn require me to play PvP….

So here are my options:

  • Do PvE until I have a viable build and then get back to PvP
  • Choose a reward track, do hot-joins or be a complete liability in solo queue.
  • Have some friends help me me by carrying me through enough matches to get what I need.

I am lucky enough to already have a few 80’s and a lot of gold, so I can just use one of them to farm reward tracks to get tomes and scrolls for my other toons. But what about new players? Some of them may be interested only in PvP. Why should we force them to do PvE? I don’t like the new unlocks. It feel like and is a grind, a long grind.

Thanks for the links, at least we’ve had developers notice this, even if no immediate fixes are to be expected.

I don’t think any of them are currently mandatory, but it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had traits entire builds are based around.

I was talking about starting a completely new character and how hard time they’ll have to get traits. All traits now cost gold and skill points to get, which is wrong IMO.

On a side note; some of the new traits were pretty awesome actually.
