PvP lacking and slow
I would prefer a bit more options in play, but I am mostly satisfied by the speed of PvP. Now that I actually wear gear with toughness, I don’t get two-shotted anymore and have time to dodge, jump behind obstacles, break line of sight, try to interrupt heals (which is trickier than it was in GW1 for some reason), etc. etc. etc. I much prefer deliberative play than insta-gibbing and being insta-gibbed. That 20 minute fight you had, I would have killed for that opportunity.
That 20 minute fight you had, I would have killed for that opportunity.
Not when both of you spam the same ability every 8 seconds cause there is nothing else to use .
Whilst I’m not expecting Devil May Cry or Dragons Nest, I think the combat needs to be a bit more active for some classes.
D/D Elementalist is a good ideal to strive towards. Attacking, defending, supporting with that class is very active and has a lot of variation because you can activate your combo & abilities in a different order or timing.
My other class, Warrior, has many moments where my optimal/only available action is to let my character autoattack.
One solution to this is to give AutoAttacks more complexity. For example, if I am strafing to the side before the 3rd attack, then it modifies the 3rd attack into a new string of attacks – slower but more damaging in the end.
If I am walking backwards during my autoattacks, I do less damage but I will parry and counter attacks from the front.
If I am walking forwards, my 3rd attack will be a damaging lunge that rushes me through my opponent.
etc, etc.
So I’m fine with leaving most of the bar as situational skills, but the pure-damage autoattack should be much more active, complex and give more choice.
450 hours spent PvPing, and you’re just now coming to this conclusion?
It’s weird, coz Snowball Mayhem is more balanced right now than the actual SPvP. lol.
And fun. Maybe coz it’s not another Conquest Map? ;P

There should at least be chain skills, say I use Leap of faith after that it should give me a chain to where I’m able to do some sort of knockdown or something then maby even have that chain off into something else. Instead of just one boring skill with sub par damg.
As GW1 was best Pvp game i ever played GW2 is worst. Never seen such boring numb and repeatitive PvP in my life so far. And its not about few option of map choice , for example LoL ir Dota has one map but every single game is different.
First they need to get rid of that horrible capture the point mode. This is not Call of Duty . Second they need to fix all the 9,000,000,000 class bugs to make other builds vialabe . Even thou you have skill to choose from 50% of them doesnt work or are useless.
Perfect balance ofc is impossible but fixing all the bugs should improve balance around.
Nerf damn thiefs.
Bring back GvG,HoH,4×4 ranked arenas. After all this is GUILD WARS not KITTEN WARS . I dont see any guilds at war currently.
Make PvP worth playing. Build ranks, ladders, PVE rewards, titles . People love titles so everyone else will know what they’ve achieved.
I came to this game for PvP and got kick in da nutts. Now im just roaming around PVE hoping for some major changes which would drag this game from grave its in.
Take Aion for example. The PvP there has that fast paced action to it while gw2 you kinda just wait for your one damg skill to come off CD just to use it again, and then have your enemy heal. I was In a fight today in WvW 2 guardians, the fight lasted for literally 10min then we both gave up cause we have no way of dealing fast damg and keeping dps on each other.
You’re basically saying that Aion was fast paced, but neglect to recall the Cleric/Templar combination that dominated and survived the most insane damage that both Assassins and Rangers could dish out? Yeah, they were the Guardian/Guardian combination in the Aion universe. Similarly, the bunker builds we have in GW2 represent the duelist gladiator, tanking chanter, and so forth. Nothing about Aion was fast paced except fights between cannon-classes (i.e. Ranger and Assassin), and you know, that is exactly the same as Thief/Warrior cannons here. Almost every MMO I know has these options, and the real problem is that bunkers are far more effective at sPVP/tPVP, not the game pace itself.
Inactive: Guardian, Elementalist, Ranger, Thief (ex-main)
Leveling: Engineer, Necromancer
Does anyone else feel this? The pvp feels completely empty, by that I mean your really only spamming 1-2 skills over and over till your enemy is dead. Ontop of that combat feels so slow paced for many classes. Take Aion for example. So it just ended up Oh better use number 2 skill again for the 50th time. Oh man look at that he healed again and hes running away, guess ill hit 3 and leap at him, look at that barely any damg done.. k I will pull him in with 5.. dodge..damn..ok 2 is off cd I guess ill use that again and blink to him. Oh! finally hes almost dead, nope he healed yet again.
Even for other classes like ranger or warrior you just spam one good skill over and over again till they die. Seriously how is this considered real pvp? I tried so hard to like this game, but damn the pvp is seriously lacking and boring. You would think for a game that is heavy on PvP there would be more skills and more depth to the combat.
Edit: I have about 600 hours into the game. Played since beta So don’t tell me how to play my class or say your just a noob. About 450 of those hours where spent pvping
Spending 450 hours and you still don’t understand PVP, proof that time spent is not the same as talent. Also, fighting guardians in WvW? That’s your example, really?
If you’re spamming 2 abilities in tournaments, you will never do well. Timing and good use of all weaponsets/abilities comboing along with your teammates is what PVP is all about.
And compared to any other MMO, it is a lot better and more complex. WoW’s arena is all about CCchain->burst, over and over, very simple to execute and RNG dependent. Aion, TSW, SWTOR, all of those had hilariously unbalanced PVP where class comp or build (or even gear-grinding lol) matters more than anything else.
That’s like saying LoL has bad PVP because you mostly autoattack and have few abilities.
You’re totally missing the point. And I’m betting you have no clue about Tpvp, where the pacing and twitch are in a really good competitive place.
(edited by xiv.7136)
hmm well im not the most seasoned spvp player (only glory rank 25 with using no boosters) but i think the game is at a really good pace in terms of combat and twitch play. The 2 classes i spvp with is a dps/support shout guardian and a condition bleed well dps/tank necro and i nearly always dont just sit there auto attacking on something. Im constantly using my class skills and slot skills and using both weapon swaps to there full extent and not just facerolling the 1-5 key.
Maybe its just the specific heavy builds that lack the action as they tend to blow there load so to speak all at once then dont have much sustain and/or just sit there tanking dmg and thats about all.
also i agree that bunker builds do slow the combat down a little especially if you encounter them in a 1v1 situation. I would love to see the capture the flag type thing like the wintersday event implimented in someday as that would make standing around a non issue as you have to engage the other team head on to well get the flag to win.

PvP in Aion was fast paced yes there was not as much balance, but at least you have variety and a ton of skills at your disposal. right now in gw2 it feels so slow. I mean you even get a 50% speed reduction when you enter combat, to me that just seems unnecessary. All I’m asking for is more skills to use and a change in pace.

I Just used guardian example cause its the most ridiculous one. Even when I fight rangers or warriors it just ends up a stalemate unless I’m fighting an under geared player. As for tournaments its still using the same skills over and over and over. Take my Ranger for example I use longbow/GS I hit 3 on longbow use 2 then 4 when he gets close then switch to GS use 3 use 4 use 2 use 5 and repeat till hes dead (Which takes along time in gw2 since all classes can do everything) yes there are utility but most of them are buffs and don’t add much more to the combat. It just feels lacking compared to other MMO’s
There are many great options for fast gameplay with a high skill cap, never autoattacking. Have you played an offensive d/d ele or a 4-kit engineer? Anet made it clear that some professions would have simpler mechanics than others. Not “easier,” just fewer buttons to press. Just choose a profession with more buttons.
There are also some good offensive guardian builds, although they often get overlooked because their defensive builds are the best in the game.
In GW2, unending fights are pretty rare—consider a traditional RPG where every healer vs healer is a stalemate. At least here it only happens once in a while.

Yup. This is the number one problem with this game. They took the hard classes and balanced them at their skill cap against the skill cap of classes that at least 75% of the population can easily max out for effectiveness.
I love this OP quote:
“Your really just spamming 1-2 abilities over and over till your enemy is dead.”
Nothing else needed to be said. This is 100% what is wrong with all of GW2 PvP. This is the problem. OP is mutha kitten Einstein. His IQ probably don’t even afraid of nothing.
But pay attention, all of you. If you read nothing else, read this:
Some classes push 1-2 skills over and over, and that is all they do. Other classes have to time their dodge roll, with a cooldown chain, following a weapon proc, during a ground effect, before Johnny Come Cure Me gets his condition removal cooldown, while hanging upside down, being water tortured, and reciting shakespear in Zulu…
Seriously this is the only problem.
What I don’t get is, you knew well before release what the game was about. You knew how the abilities worked, and the type of Pvp we would have. What class are you playing that spams the same abilities?

Ranger… Thief… Warrior… Guardian… Take yer pick bruh. Every one of them has I build, I have used myself, that is 3 or less buttons and a sammich in my other hand. Haven’t tried to make a tardsimple Mesmer build yet but I am pretty sure you can. Engi, Necro, and Ele are like Ancient Hebrew to a Highschool dropout in comparison no matter what build you use.
It is the problem with all of PvP in GW2.

You’re missing the point, the lack of skills that each class has. There is dodge rolling and some classes have combos they can do, but I’m talking about the lack of skills this game has. It is no fun playing a heavy PvP focused game when you only have 10 weapon ability’s at your disposal and half of them don’t do much damg or are just there to close the gap between you and your enemy.
I don’t acknowledge anything other than what I quoted in your OP nor do I have the want or desire to get whatever it is.
The problem is One Pump Chump classes are competing with Extremely complicated classes, and that is the root cause of every other issue.
You can’t make some classes tardeasy, and allow that tardeasy playstayle to be competitively dominant. You destroy any chance at Fun for all those players not running the tardeasy builds. You have to reward diversity and complexity. Not Legolas the auto attack/ quickness champion huntard or our scatterbomb dropping LoS dodging thief friends…
This stuff should be completely obvious but it is not. WHY?

I Apologize for misreading your older post, Your right on the “One Pump Chump” Take thief or warrior for example many people just spam heart seeker or back stab with thief. For warrior just bull charge frenzy and 100B. There is nothing more to that class than just that. You can build differently, but you still gonna end up using the same ability’s again.
I agree with you on thief, the only way that is fixed is lowering the dmg on dd because they can’t overhaul initiative. I play elem and eng, and those require way more than 2 buttons. I just want more types of games. Every map is the same kitten over and over, just different landscape.
the problem is easier classes perform equally well if not better than “harder” classes/specs
Some specs are easy, true. Most are “simpler”—a big difference. For example, the warrior was released as the simplest profession, and they are. However, they are anything but “easy” to take to a tournament. Sure, they’re the kind of profession that is easy to play casual vs. casual, but since this thread is about more complicated playstyles, I assume we are talking about higher levels of play?
Eles are doing great with multiple specs. Engineers are in an odd place right now but I love playing my 4-kit build—never gets old. I autoattack maybe 2-3 times every 30 seconds. They’re not OP, but they’re definitely tourney-viable.
My point is that Anet never wanted all professions to be equally complicated, and designed a lot of the game to be very casual-friendly. At the same time, they included a lot of nice options for those of us who want a high skill floor.

lol @ 600 hours into the game, ill believe it when you supply a time stamped full proof link with your RL picture and address just so i can stop by and convince your mom to kick you out of hte house.
but on topic. i hate rediculously fast TTK pvp games, its not fun and doesnt promote ambushes.
also your a guardian, you dont do much damage, two guardians fighting is like to healers fighting in wow pvp…no where fast.
Does anyone else feel this? The pvp feels completely empty, by that I mean your really only spamming 1-2 skills over and over till your enemy is dead.
LOL. Let me guess, you play a thief?
I actually agree, as someone who mained a Assassin and Chanter in Aion, combat here feels terribly slow, there is no clutch ablitiles… .I miss AetherTwising, Ambush, Counter Attack :/
