PvP, motivational enough?
Ladder is on the horizon, game modes are not. As far as we know.

I hope it wont be ladder for premade teams only or paid tournaments because I haven’t got time for that
I got the impression it is going to be for everyone in PvP and that there is going to be a big PvP patch early next year. They made some comments throughout the discussion about how they are trying to make things good for both the hardcore e-sports players and the entry level casual players alike.
I primarily stopped spvping because all the rewards were limited to the mists. I felt, after 780 games, that I had wasted my time. If I couod level up characters there I would do it more.
Anet lied (where’s the Manifesto now?)
The motivation is appearance/skill.
The same can be said about PvE, a lot of players get to 80 and say “o well now there’s nothing to do” motivation in this game comes from aesthetic items not from a never-ending gear grind treadmill. If that’s not enough for you, you won’t be here long.
Not saying OPs reasons aren’t valid, we do need ladders/spectator and all that for a strong competitive community.

I agree. A main motivation of a long term PvPer will be too get better and win more often. Playing the same game mode/maps over and over in hotjoin (which is a mess),and pugs getting stomped in free tournaments is causing a lot of people to lose motivation and move on imo.
+10 / -10 is a very bad system, something like trueskill rating system would be better, which would consider the ranks of each player in team. For example: r40-50 team wins against r10-20 team, they get +1 TS, and other team loses -1 TS but if that r10-20 team wins, they get +3 TS, while other team loses it.

I would really like to see my name on ladderboard top 100. Motivational enough. Proves you did something with your invested time. skins/skill/waiting for pvp patch … will it hold me in this game? Yes it will, but only because of community and faith and awesome made mmo.
About that +10/-10 I said. Here are some examples of ladder systems, it would be nice to check them out if you are developer so you can develop nice product.
1. World of tanks (WoT):
Rating Value Place
GR Global Rating 10 287 763
W/B Victories/Battles 48% 732 363
E/B Average Experience per Battle 258 411 172
WIN Victories 1 953 222 732
GPL Battles Participated 4 093 216 957
CPT Capture Points 5 372 262 266
DMG Damage Caused 1 935 224 221 798
DPT Defense Points 3 514 172 052
FRG Targets Destroyed 2 935 208 351
SPT Targets Detected 1 520 428 647
EXP Total Experience 1 056 243 263 795
Experience is calculated how well you do in battle. So exp/battle ranking makes sense.
Global rank is made out of exp/battle and win/loss which are changeable variables and of damage caused (all games together) which is accumulative and it says:
“Look you invested some time, heres the result of it modified by how well you did in battles”
2. Knight online
National point system. (Could be used for clan ranks)
National points are adding up.
Every person has it own ammount.
Guilds total is sum of all members.
While solo (imagine WvWvW) you gain 50 np on kill.
While full party of 7 you gain 14.
You lose np on death.
Example:
Rank Guildname National points
1 . Ou yea 34 555 765
2. Hello there 27 777 222
…
3. League of legends…
… elo system which offers solo queue/team queue. You win rank and lose rank based on win/lose (at least it was when i played it, 1.5 year ago). Well… it works and look at that playerbase!
Conclusion:
Guild wars 2 have some strong variables to implement into ranking system.
Glory points (which are accumulative)
w/l or honor/battle ratios
etc…
Lobby games can be made rankless, tourney could be ranked games. I know there is some ladder on the way, but as i’ve heard its ranked via tournament tickets and only exists as plain text on forum thread.
Message to gw2 devs, you are doing great job, you have awesome product capable of having huge playerbase and great ladder/e-sport tournament systems. Please implement ladderboard and implement it with some brains competition is coming in form of other mmos announced!
fingers crossed,
see you
