Hey there,

I do really hope, actually, that someone from ANet can respond to this, as I’m very currious where actually are we heading…

I will start with this – I have pretty much no idea why I’m playing pvp.

Obviously, playing sPvP for glory doesn’t make any sense at the moment. I got anything I could/wanted from Deer rank, and I’m only at 14th rank. It proceeds slowly, and all the gold chests drops are just rubbish. Salvaging them gives me at best deer token… which I can transform into Deer armor, which I already have.

So I mostly stack my glory, with no idea or purpose how to use it.

And obviously, playing 2 teams tournaments now is the only thing that makes any sense at all. Winning chests is addictive, I admit. Drops from chests are pretty neat, I admit. Whole week on the same map, which in the end get’s horribly borring, but ok… it still gives me a lot of fun anyway.

But I’m just thinking to myself… What next? Where are we heading?

Leveling and gaining ranks is as slow as it can be. The day when I reach 80th rank, Guild Wars 4 will premiere. Soon I will get all the drops from chests that I’m looking forward to. Probably it’s gonna happen before I will hit 25th rank.

So I’m well dressed, as I would like to, with no real chances on getting cultural armor any time soon and hitting last rank. Thousands of glory which I can waste on tokens to have fun in Mystic Forge… and one type of tournament I’m playing all the time.

So what is a long term for me?

80 is not a long term – it’s so far away I can’t even see it.
All the armors from tournament chests are short term goals.
HotM is a nice hub, but still – it’s just bunch of ruins on an island with few people wandering around.

Why Hall of fame is empty since the game release?
Why there are no upcoming tournaments, bigger events which can last for days/weeks?
Why can’t I buy gems for glory for example (1k glory = 1 gem?)?
Why there is nothing else for the glory than useless chests from which I’m salvaging everything, while getting rubbish mats from it.
Why there are no arenas (2v2 – 3v3)?
Why there are no duels?
Shouldn’t HotM be something more than few walls and training ground? Like a hub for few servers, where sPvP is essential, and nothing more?
Why 2 teams tournaments can’t roll on random map EACH time we play, not every week?
Why gaining ranks give me clearly nothing as I have better gear from tournament chests than I will be able to buy through next 40-50 levels?

GW2 is maybe not about sPvP, but it’s a wonderfull and complex world which we can’t really see while logging to Heart of the Mists. It’s gray and sad, with no social interactions among people who are there, and nothing more than a tournament master who let’s you join the match, and a large wardrobe…

so, the tl:dr is: What goals do we have in PvP now? Do we have any at all, aside from short term objectives?

I’m actually going to give ANet the benefit of the doubt here and assume that they do have some sort of plan laid out for the glory system. I think the current numbers are where they are as a sort of temporary holdback while ANet creates something actually worth grinding for and spending glory on.

I just hit r39 and the glory per rank tripled from 15k to 45k instead of doubling every 10 ranks like before. If this trend continues, that means it would take over 3 million rank points per rank to get from 70-79, and over 9 million to rank 80. Pretty ridiculous.

Battlefield 2 had a similar issue with its rank system shortly after launch. For the first couple months, each rank took a ridiculous amount of time to get, meaning that almost no one had any unlocks. After the game matured a bit and the playerbase spread out, and also after expansions were announced with more unlockables, DICE lowered the rank requirements across the board and retroactively placed everyone in their correct rank based on their accumulated points.

I suspect GW2 will follow a similar path. Given how there is still that placeholder Tengu NPC in the Heart of the Mists, it’s pretty clear that the PvP reward system is far from fully fleshed out. Hopefully in the (near) future, ANet will find a way to create incentive to bring new players into the PvP scene and keep veteran players coming back.

I don’t consider an aspect of the game until I find every single server empty.

Someone’s having fun with it. I am, for one. Why aren’t you?

It lacks a lot of stuff, sure. In fact it lacks the most basic and important features, but it’s still playable and you can still have fun with it.

Only a handsome of top tier PvP players remained because there is simply nothing to play for anymore. We are all running low on patiance and hopes thet they realy mean to promote and care about the PvP part of the game. So the majority of these remaining teams will quit the game next month unless we get :ratings, seperated queues, costum arenas at least. And this is not my fantasy it is a harsh fact.
So only casual pvpers or new teams will remain, who dont see things yet, as the top does. Actually that is a beneficial thing for Anet, because less people will complain, there wont be a top tier pvp base that needs to be pleased, so they can add pvp contents to the game as they want. But the pvp scene will never flourish from that point on.

Well, you would know it wont ship with decent PvP if you’ve been following it at all. The only PvP it has is WvW, with the standard level to cap and gear out routine. It doesn’t even have any sort of small scale or battleground type format.

The game’s focus isn’t on PvP, and Elder Scrolls is an RPG series in the first place.

It makes me sad, since there’s really no MMO with actual competitive PvP that could ever be taken seriously. MMOs just retain too much of their RPG nature with all the RNG and gear progression for PvP to work. GW2 was that one light in the darkness with the whole Heart of the Mists thing, but then they suddenly just didn’t support it. GW2 could have, and would have, become an enourmous eSport success if the developers just tried. The following was already there.

The only reason I still play it is because there’s no new better thing out yet. And there probably wont be for years.

The thing is Anet marketed this game to be a PvP game (which is why I bought it). The fact that there is no gear grind is the most appealing part of the game. Aside from skins, there is no other form of progression, which is ok if there is enough content to keep me occupied, of which there is not. There needs to be more game types so that if I get bored of conquest, I can play CTF, Arena Deathmatch, Kill the Lord, GvG, etc. That would keep me occupied constantly. Add in ladders, trophies that a guild can show off, or anything that shows you’re a top team will motivate other teams to shoot for the same goal might bring back teams and guilds that have left. Maybe an open world dueling arena in the mists where players can stand around and watch people randomly duel but still requires you to queue up for it. Or if two players want to challenge each other, they can queue together and have their duel while people who are standing around in the mist can just watch. That might even bring in PVE players into the mist just to watch duels and maybe dabble in PvP. That’s a lot of maybes, but I feel any ideas that can improve the PvP side of the game is worth mentioning at this point.

Well, you are probably right but the original Guild Wars was a PvP centered game (and had one the best PvP I have ever played) and we were told about Guild Wars 2 taking PvP on MMOs to the next level making it an e-sport…. and what do we have now?

A really nice PvE game, with decisions in the storyline, soft end-game, etc.

So until I can see and play ESO by myself, I will hope that there is not a siege PvP game

GW2 CAN be the next League of Legends. It needs stuff fast.

Don’t let the devs spam marketing crap.

No promises.

You know, GW1 had this exact same thing right? HoH Fame Rank. And it was nothing but grind, meant jack kitten, and didn’t interfere with having a ladder… that thing we’re getting within the month and that is already, technically, in affect just invisible.

The system may be (sic: fundamentally) flawed against solo-q players (and Tyler’s reply in that thread gives me hope that they will split the queue), but that doesn’t change the fact that it does exist and will become visible.

It pretty much died when nothing happened in January and then February was just a roll back to free tournaments, yet another conquest map, and a useless MMR system.

Solo queue is the most highly demanded thing at the moment because most people have completely given up on the idea running and maintaining teams in a system that doesn’t support competitive play.

if anything, make spvp a segment of WvW, a place where the competing servers can have 5v5 tournaments to win certain objectives

Just look at the sPvP forums, they never implement something new or change anything significatively without announcing it everywhere. Take the Spirit’s Watch map for example, they announced it even with a blog spot.

i roll in a small group that likes to fight zergs. sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, but it’s very exciting cuz u gotta perform at 100% and your spec makes a huge difference. if i feel like doing 1v1/2/3 fights to challenge myself, i can easily find them. but imo wvw is all about the guild, thats what makes it fun.

These people expect a huge PvP update every month. It’s only to keep hopes up.
ArenaNet: “We never said exactly when the PvP patch would be, the big one.”

See http://y2u.be/I0togRMEc_o at 1:12:24.

Despite the video being from last month, does it sound like “the big PvP update” will be this month? No. Does ArenaNet know when it’ll be? Probably not.

ArenaNet don’t keep players in the loop because they have too many uncertainties. They don’t have real answers to questions people ask, so they keep quiet or tip-toe around the questions when they begin to feel the guilt of keeping players in the dark.

I’m sure they’re trying their best to improve PvP. Unfortunately for them, their pace is not quick enough to satisfy many players.

I got the monthly done, and it took a couple hours. I didn’t get anything I could remotely use to financially boost or level up my character further. This makes little sense to me.

I would like to see:
An experience gain of some sort for PvP
Some means of profit for PvP
Rewards that are solely from PvP that can transcend into the PvE and WvW realms (Such as unique skins)
Expansion of the trait system for more build variety (for of course all modes of game-play)

Now I think all of these things will be added in the future as they are only logical improvements, but I wonder how long such an endeavor would take? I sometimes feel as though Anet is working on too many things at once or something big that is taking up too much time and resources. I would just been happy if they made an announcement that they hired a kitten ton of people so we know they can handle it all.
