Is this a troll about GvG? What I see is a maximum of 10 guilds playing spvp. Sure you think of GW1 and the thousands of guilds playing it. But this train allrdy left to “games that aren’t released in a terrible incomplete alpha-state”.

If GW2 was just a game pve had to say it once.

Now that the ladder is allegedly in some state of functionality (albeit invisibly) it would be a good time to resurrect the GvG issue imo.
The thing that made GvG wildly popular was not the handful of extremely high skill level teams. The mid-level to semi-pro types that were never top level players were everywhere. They popped up out of nowhere and would try like hell to max out their ladder position and see how high they could go. The “guild” aspect of it was signifigant, because forcing people to coordinate a team of 8 rather than just solo-queing all day created a degree of continuity even when a player would leave the game, because the Guild got the ladder recognition, not the player. If there is only a ladder for this game that recognizes individual achievement and never a guild or at least Team ladder, then sPvP will never reach the level of popularity that GW had.
