QPs: A sustainable system?
Think of Qp’s as still being in the beta stage because they have no use atm. While you will find better tpvp players at the top of the list I don’t think anyone really takes it as a ranking system.
I personally hope they scrap the qp system when the rating system comes out while figuring out a way to not make the previous qps earned meaningless. The QP leaderboard I suppose is better than no sort of ranking at all, but not by much.

You’re so wrong, the QP leaderboard is a joke and an insult, it does NOT measure skill, sure, you have lots of QPs because you win a lot you say, true, true, but there’s also other teams out there that don’t play every day for 6 hours a day (like mine) yet we’re exactly on par as any other competitive team but we dont have 600 QP simply because we do not have the time.
QP is a sad excuse for a ladder.
The QP system was never meant to be a ranking system or ladder.
The points will be used as a currency for the coming tournament types (e.g. monthly/yearly), and that’s it.
The implementation of a ranking system was already annouced for the big february patch.
qp are just there to make stop qqing the players who wanted a for of ladder.
but a ladder should allow “gain/lose” position, while here is just a farmfest for dedicated teams.

This… but there is also going to be daily tournaments that use QP

So we need to grind free tournaments to play paid tournaments. Then we need to grind paid tournaments to play monthly/yearly tournaments?
They should just do it like on gw1.
Ladder to gain rating.
daily tournies to gain rating + QPs. (there was 3 daily available every day)
a small amount of QPs (20) needed for monthly and QPs were reset every month
We’ll be doing RANKING ladders in the future. The QP system is used for tournament entry. I’ll talk more about how these systems work together when the new system is ready to be brought on line!

Jon, please don’t make it too grindish like the glory system. And make it competitive, so that even if you’re new and started pvping months after the system was implemented that you still have the chance to get on top. I could give you a brilliant example of an ranking system in PM if you want (not mine, just what one private DotA league uses. and the rating system itself keeps the players there, and keeps them motivated)

I’m glad to get a response. Perhaps I overlooked these details somewhere. Looking forward to the ranked matches though.

No prob. The new system will use rating/matchmaking. The Qualifying Points will still exist, but they’re different systems for different needs. QP shows some skill (it’s not easy to win a paid tourney if there are other good teams), but at the same time, it’s not a true rating/ranking system (as many of you on the forums have stated).
We know this. It’s not intended to replace a rating system. Both can exist in the same world.

qp is still dumb. tournament entry should be based on rank, period. If a team is 10-0 against the top 5 teams but doesn’t “farm” QP why should they be excluded from bigger tournies? Dumb system is dumb.
the entire paid vs free tournament just makes no sense. if you have a proper ranking system you only need 1 tournament system, then take the top X teams and place them in a bigger monthly/yearly/whatever tournament. I understand your hope was for people to buy tickets with RL money, but come on.
Here let me help you fix your broken system.
Free Tournament Mode Only
-separate solo queuers from premade queuers
-proper skill based ranking system, no QP
-top 32 teams at end of ranking period get into monthly pool play
-8 pools of 4 teams, round robbin best of 3 (each tournament rotation map)
-each pool winner and 4 wild cards get seeded, top 4 get byes – best of 3 in pigtail rounds, best of 7 in remaining rounds.
I just fixed your broken system in 10 seconds.

The whole tournament system for normal play should be written off as a sunk cost. Stop tying the game to a horrible system and bad monetization plan. Give us matchmaking, remove free and paid tournaments, have single/duo queue and group queue with ratings and come up with creative ideas for monetization instead of trying to force people to grind or buy tournament tickets for competitive play.
Trying to have a rating system and still using the current free and paid tournaments system is a mind numbingly bad decision and I really hope that isn’t what plan to release.
I personally don’t think it should even be used for tournament entry. There seems to be so many unaccounted for situations where QPs just become a barrier. What if you recruit a new member without many QPs? Do you have to specifically avoid recruiting people who aren’t listed? Doesn’t that put the biggest barrier ever created on new players trying to get into a competitive scene? What if an old team was inactive for a period but becomes active once big tournaments are announced? Do you think you will attract old teams to come back with this current system?
While this is all conjecture, the QPs are going to function as a currency to enter daily/monthly tournaments. So being low on the list shouldn’t matter as long as you are able to earn enough QPs for the tournament entry in a reasonable period of time. But as you pointed out there are many ways that the system could end up being designed in a horrible way, and unfortunately based on everything since release I wouldn’t be too surprised if they deliver a horrible system.
I doubt the entry into these tournies will be very much. I would venture a guess that a monthly might cost 50-100 QP which is nothing for all these so called ‘pro’ teams that can beat the top 50 QP ladder teams right? Spend a few nights a week and farm them if its that easy for you.
I don’t think it’s going to matter much what kind of ladder/rating system is used for the future, but for me it’s all about how many people get invited to bigger tournaments and stuff. For example, WoW really went wrong by having top 4 (and eventually top 8 ) move on in their “tournament realm.” Beyond people queueing at odd hours to give themselves more of an advantage to rank up in the ladder, there was win-trading that would go on as well.
If you have like the top 64 that advance to a bracket or something like that I think you would see a lot less of this because it’s not a huge deal as long as you place in the top 64. This is especially true if you want to promote the idea that even if you don’t play a lot you can still play with the best. And yes, I say this despite my team having the top 3 spots on the NA QP ladder.
Having it like this also gives hope to lower tier players, and makes it more fun. It’s a any given sunday kinda thing.
But now they’re hating cause a brotha finally got some buzz

Well, as he stated here we can still do ranked within worry about the QPs. I feel pretty good about his responses to be honest. I’m looking at it this way: Matchmaking is the standard online board most of us will compete in, while QP tournaments will be more like EVO (a very competitive fighting game tournament). As selfish as this sounds, I hope that Anet is pulling some long shifts to get these out in January.

but why do you even need currency if you have a ladder? Top X get in, done. I’m a casual player but it still frustrates me they are doing this so wrong.
the great thing about WoW arena was you could play the minimum 10 games a week and still maintain top tier position

Hopefully once QP fees are established we will see top teams in matchmaking. Would your team rather grind past what you need or go to matchmaking to lead the boards?(actual question)
They need to sort out a better ranked system. Otherwise it is just another grind just like any other MMO….

Yeah pretty much.
Seeing what a monumental kitten up pvp is i don’t expect them to pull anything redeeming out of their arses come Jan-Mar

I can speak for everyone else, but personally i’d rather be at the top of matchmaking rather than the top of QP.

Its a joke. If its farm based its not skill based this has been shown when WoW made the transition from farm based BG’s to skill based rated arenas very few of the top BG farmers ever became part of a top rated arena team maybe 5% the rest of the top teams were people with real skill that did not have the time to farm and be part of a team that demanded multiple hours a day for farming.
A skill based ladder system is what let good pvpers with a life shine. Win your games go up in rating, lose and go down. Zero benefit from farming/playing more.

When you say ranking ladders in the future, is it possible to get more information?
Like An elo rating similar to wows?
Will we be having an arena system ever in this game?
