if a ranger builds super tanky, its your own fault for not paying attention to the pet.

tank ranger gives up group utility for single target dmg ( you can argue whether this is proper design or not, but this is 100% how they are currently intended to be balanced by looking at the combination of pet affinity & healing as stats in the BM tree ), & that dmg can be countered by any class or spec through good positioning.

an 8k blinding slash usually means lining up buffs for the strike as well, not all blinding slashes hit for 8k. the easiest example to watch for is might stacking on the pet during rampage. always watch the pet, but especially so during rampage & limit the ranger from hitting you at all ( line of sight ), since that is what is buffing the pet.

every class can deal very good damage in this game, the question is whether you can line up your active defenses properly to neutralize it. learn pet anims & how to path them.

Pets shouldnt chase you for miles either. It is stupid having some pet behind you when the ranger is the other side of the map. Unrealistic and OP and lame.

yes he should be able to do this because:

1. you must have had low-med armour
2. It’s the highest dmg skill he has and other professions have much higer.
3. It requires a lot of “set up” to do this sort of damage – he either needed to stack like ~20 might, or use signet of the hunt active/gs5 timing perfectly with sick-em utility
4. Though he can be reasonably tanky, he can’t be full tank and still do this damage, he needs to devote utility to pet dmg, he needs to devote traits to pet dmg
5. Birds have the most obviously telegraphed attacks, if you learn to watch for them you’ll start hoping a ranger brings them as they are so easy to avoid.
6. Birds are all about big burst damage, no sustained dps – that means if you do dodge or block etc that 1 attack then he’s basically doing next to no damage to you for the next 20 seconds

Edit: i think i just worked out what happened from the screenshot – he probably popped his Elite skill to do this – Rampage as One, then warhorn 5 – stacked 17 might on his pet – this could have been avoided if you knew how this mechanic worked, and dodged some of the warhorn attack – literally every hit landed on you.

Next time you will know to look out for this – the damage itself may not seem worth evading/blocking but each small hit in fast attack skills will give the pet a stack of might – another to look out for is LB2 or SB auto-attack especially with quickness.

I’m just going to put this out there, the difference between light and heavy armor is about 5% damage reduction to standard attacks(non-condition). So when someone says you have an advantage because of your armor, you can pretty much call it bs.

sorry but this is wrong, 2k armour = light, 3k = heavy – if you just play the game/test it by have a thief attack you with each set-up instead of relying on theorycrafting from whatever wrong information source you’re using then you’ll see that the thief will do around double the dps…

2k armor doesn’t equal light nor does 3k equal heavy. Look at the base armor stats for each class. Light is 1836 with heavy being 2127. Again, there’s no real difference in damage taken.

guardians can do just as much dps with 3k armour just not in 1 hit, warriors can do higher in 1 hit as well as higher dps with 3k armour. Other classes might not have the same armour and damage but have other ways to survive whilst doing the same or greater dps – stealth/deathshroud etc

Not a fan of the play-style high damage pets encourages which is basically for the pet class to run around not doing anything while something half computer controlled (the pet) kills there opponent. Probably not op in terms of group fights but its awful to face in 1v1 and feels cheap.(not necessarily saying it is just how it feels to the average player on the receiving end especially a melee).

I know that you can be as bad as you want and those pets can still kill stuff for you but, we’re talkin’ about a pet…wtf at the moment, after this patch, pets alone are better than warriors…thx god those terrible pew pew noobs (Even worse than hs spammers) have troubles with quickness nerf too…at least they did something about that bs spec..quickness and just let autoattack go 24/7….just….lol

Is this the Mythical 30 Skirmishing/30 Wilderness/30 Beastmaster with i’m guessing that was Greatsword/Sickem/3 Traps/Signet of the Hunt and/or Signet of the Wild

Cause Beastmaster build is different from Trap Build.

You got killed by a Beastmaster, judging by what you were hit for, I’m guessing you were glass cannon with zero toughness.

considering they just buffed white raven so we can have legit double blinding slash burst, i’d presume ANet says this is working as intended.

mesmer clones were considered OP at first until ppl learned to play around them. ranger pets require the same attention.

( that being said, double raven is pretty strong. ppl will have to adjust to it like 100b if the build becomes more popular )

Oh well nwm…you just can’t get the point….

No. DPS is not about the same. However many points you have invested on BM matters. Whether you have the 30% crit dmg bonus for pets matters. Whether you have Signet of the Wild and Sic Em matters.

The bird simply does not hit for those numbers without heavy stacking of modifiers. My bird on my knight gear ranger at best crits for 4-5k normally unbuffed. You have to majorly pump it up with cooldowns to get that number.

Which, by the way, a mesmer can do every 12 seconds or a thief every time he stealths or a warrior every 8 seconds. While it takes the ranger 120+ second cooldowns stacking to do.

The cooldowns are linked. Just like how you can’t double daze with black and pink moa, you can’t use blinding slash twice with double ravens.

Thiefes comlaining about ranger burst…?

Those kinds of numbers are achieved by poping at least one of those cooldowns

  • “Sick ’Em”
  • Signet of the Hunt
  • Hilt Bash

Kinda like the old “Basilisk Venom – Assassins Signet – Mug – Backstab – Heartseeker” combo, but that one was “perfectly balanced” and a “L2P” issue last time I asked a Thief

(No seriously, burst damage like that is just too high, but thats not a single class issue right now)
