Rank 1 needs some guidance

Blah blah blah. Did you win? Did the little guy have a good time on his first match?
really bad engineer
Every new player has to do his first match on some placement. Unfortunately it seems you are currently ranked at exactly this entry level. ArenaNet is currently think about adjusting the entry level to a lower mmr.
Until then… increase your mmr, and you won’t have this problem again.
Suggestion: Adjust the tutorial, so that new players have to at least win one hot join match to be able to queue up for a soloq-tournament.

When the queue time is past 5-10minute mark it usually will gives up and match whoever that is available since there is no one to match near your mmr. You can increase your MMR how much you want won’t change it. I get r1s in top50-200 numerous times a week.

What normally happens:
Random PvE’er kittening around in UI
“Pvp huh… I wonder. Woh! I can play now!”
plays now
Gets rolled
“PvP sucks”
never comes back
Today i was observing hotjoins and saw some thief in hotjoins spamming auto attacks on people with the default build and soldiers amulet. Then he says “I don’t understand this games pvp at all”.
Afraid we would lose another potential pvp’er I guested to his server, taught him how to gear, how to change traits, and got him set up with a basic D/P build. Then I showed him how to backstab, how to enter stealth by leaping through smoke fields, and some other basic thief stuff before sending him on his way with an invitation to pm me with any questions he may have down the road.
I spent probably about an hour with this dude showing him the basics. When all was said and done, I sent him on his way with an invitation to pm with any questions. Then I thought: “Why is this my responsibility?”

No kitten.
Anet setup up the match system like crap.
Every other game has unrankedQ AND rankedQ…
You can’t join ranked until you are so high of a rank…
You can screw around in unranked to practice/warm-up without effecting your rank, you can learn the game in unranked better since your matched more based on experience than MMR, or you can even just play casually with friends (what a concept… a social MMO…)
Anet decided to toss that and make elo hell like 5 times worse.
Anet decided to make the vast majority of people who play their game get like 5 times worse matchmaking.
Anet decided to not allow people to play with friends short of ranked team tournies…
It’s kittening hilarious how bad that this coorporation is at making MMOs.
The game could have managed with a decent PvP population if they had some coordination and thought behind what they were doing.

Yeah, definitely, I enjoy helping newbies and do it a lot but I feel like we shouldn’t need to be doing this. The community should get together and make a real brief tutorial/guide for each of the classes, maybe grouch or something could look into working it into the game somehow so new players see this straight up instead of going in with the silly default builds and getting rekt? Some of the default builds are really silly and the game is REALLY brutal on new players.

3v3 death matches would be the ideal way to train new players by promoting small team based coordination outside of third party VoIP and it has only one objective so there is less of a need for direct communication. Once the player gets the hang of tdm they can decide to try conquest etc.
YO what up kirito….lol, You sir did the world of pvp a great service, and i to have found myself doing the same, it is important for all players to take the initiative, and HELP OUT OTHER PLAYERS!!!!! It is time consuming, can be frustrating, but you can make a new friend, and have some lols in the process. I lost like 200 tournament games before i even knew there was a leader board, lol. I am reminded of the first time i played modern warfare multiplayer. I was shooting at people, but they would kill me first every time. I asked my brother(who was on the ground laughing at my ability to die so quickly) what was the deal. His statement to this day is still quite profound…“aim down your sights”. Many players forget that this game is heavy on the action, and what flys in pve, will get you killed in pvp. Quite simply at some point the fundamentals(calling targets, not fighting in losing situations, and knowing when and where to dodge) have to be learned. I learned (after being the victim of) that people put c4 on objectives in Battlefield 3. I have 15 seconds of stability, because of necros, and cc warriors. I think people should realize that you don’t start kicking kitten just by going in, you will have to learn.

+1
I agree that there needs to be more in place to train new players as while I welcome new faces to the scene it can be really frustrating playing a Tourny with someone who has no idea what is going on or how to use there skills correctly.
Give a man a fire and he’s warm for a day, but set a man on fire . . .
Newbies seem to have a really hard time grasping the basics of conquest. I am not sure if that’s because they are new to pvp, new to gaming, or because GW2 really lacks any kind of pvp tutorial.
There is no question that the starting area with the few pvp trainers is beyond bad. The island with all the downed npcs doesn’t teach you anything about what you are supposed to do in a match.
Given that the pvp population is so small, I’d suggest rewarding people with achievement points for basic stuff that would have been covered in a pvp tutorial that this game does not have yet. For example, you rez your first downed player in a hotjoin match – 5 achievent points. You capture your very first node – 5 pts. This way you can encourage people to specifically learn how to fire treb, kill treb, repair treb, grab the orb, kill Svanir or whatever. People will do it because it will be worth achievement points. It may also motivate pve players to try out spvp.
Lastly, please do not allow people to enter a tournament before they have reached rank 20. Until then the tab for competitive play should be grayed out. People rage hard at the r1 rifle warrior in solo queue and that’s not going to motivate him or her to pvp more.

Conquest is being able to 1v1 well and have effective communication. Both are not designed for new players. This game needs a death match more than a conquest tutorial imo.
