Rank or Unrank PVP

I just start to play in PVP. I followed as a guide new players PVP said but I got stomps in Unrank matches. Should I change it to ranked in PVP? Also do I need to get Ho T too to improve in PVP?

Eventually after many games in Unranked your match rating (that is currently hidden) will adjust so you are grouped with other players with similiar win rates and skill to yourself.
