I would class myself as a veteran ranked PvPer. I hold all achievements for Necromancer and Champion Illusionist and am Dragon Rank.
After getting to dragon rank with my necro and mesmer, I wanted to try newer things. I’d dabbled in elementalist, and had 40 or so wins as a thief (so decided my next title goal would be shadow), but I’d never done warrior, like, EVER and I’d not been successful at engineer. Guild mates are the same. So used to one class, but desperate to try another.
So, I am suggesting that the ranks obtained in PvP are not account-wide, but should be per class. I went in to a ranked match as a warrior, after never playing warrior before (albeit a few practice runs in the guild arena) and felt a let down to my team. Tactics aside, I didn’t properly know how to play this build. Neither does my guild mate really truly understand engineer. So, perhaps it isn’t the best idea to be matched up with ‘equal’ opponents when you’re actually less ‘experienced’ in a particular profession?
Would it therefore be a good idea to have class-ranks, rather than account-wide? OR, have I misunderstood match-making, because that baffles me too, a little bit judging some of the horrifying teams and team-mates we get put with (if not a full guild party).

I think this function was deactivated because people abused it to get matched up against easier opponents. They just switched to their mainclass after the game was created.
Not 100% sure about it.
It is annoying to see people sporting the Legendary Champ title on classes they know little about. I have far more trust with Champion Class titles than the generic r80 one.
I’m not against this idea.
Also, on my alt account, I get the crappiest teams on specific classes and higher tier teams on other classes.
I think the matchmaking system is supposed to take into account how often you’ve played a certain class but if what the guy above me said about it being deactivated is true then idk if there’s anything monitoring it. Honestly though I’d have to say I’m against the idea just because when I play I like to go against people who are good (as do all of us I’m sure) and I’d rather not have to go back to noob- city every time I decided to try something new but I definitely see where the merit is in your idea.
I support this 100%. I want to know when my teammates will need some wiggle room and if I need to support them or change my build without asking how skilled they are at that class.
This doesn’t work if people can swap to other classes mid match. It will get abused as it was before. No thanks.

also that total stats in match making should be taken in cossideration as, to not have bunker teams vs power only team ,multiple ele or theifs ect…
But as lunar says its easylly abused if u swap classes,and ANET doesnt wont to change this part of game.
I dont see a reason why not since most ppl play with a 1 character per day and dont want to swap class,just lock the classes when match making start rolling.
i like the idea , and i think even if you swap mid-match it doesnt matter because as far as i know the rank is only a small piece of the formula used for mmr
and i think this would be great for causuals, so they have a goal once they reach rank80, and maybe (big dream) even make for each class a specific finisher if reached r80 on that class, that would really encourage players to play each class a few hundrets games if they want all finishers
and maybe even minimize the useless QQ about how OP other classes are because we all know , most of the time the reason is because the player doesnt really know the class he is QQ´ing about
I remember during the first test ladder, there was an open dialog between us and a pvp dev about activating profession based MMR. It’s prolly deactivated along with the LB
Thanks to your responses, guys. I think as for the exploit (and completely appreciate that as an argument against the idea), Anet need to stop people changing class during the match period. Matchmaking needs a big improvement, we all know that, so that needs to be corrected first. But, if they made sure you couldn’t swap to your main, that you know inside and out, then that’d stop the exploit and would match you fairly against your team mates and opponents.
This isn’t about tactical PvP skill, it’s about how much someone understands a brand new class if they were to suddenly try something new at rank 80.
PvP Rank is for people dedication and knowledge about PvP.
MMR is for balancing people skill among the fight.
MMR could be class bound, not PvP Rank.
My understanding is that the glicko2 mmr algorithm they use does factor in profession ranking. When I log into a new toon I haven’t pvp’d on, I have noticed that I am placed with substantially lower ranked players.
That being said, since I have played a lot of pvp, I’m always placed with higher people than I would be if I my account had never pvp’d before. I think this makes sense… as someone mentioned you don’t want to make it too easy for people to exploit by logging back into their main and getting matched against new players.
Usually I’ll do hot join, or play some custom arena with guildies to learn a new profession so it’s not quite so punishing.
As I said, I agree about the possibility of the exploit, and provided a suggestion to counteract that. However, it would be nice to have a dev reply to this thread to help me understand exactly how the algorithm does work in this regard considering what you have both said above.
