Q:

Am I right in thinking that the way the current rating system works is that teams are matched based on a combined average of all the players in each team? Doesn’t this mean that we are not only not playing with players our own ability or against? It just means that the numbers are level?

For example:
Ratings of team 1 – 20 – 20 -20 -20 -20
Ratings of team 2 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 100
Clearly the team 2 is at a dis-advantage?

But this isn’t just affecting because because they lose but it is not fun to neither play against people a lot better or worse than you.

I would like to suggest that tournaments operate on a bracket system, for example ratings of 1-100 play each other? 100-200 play each other etc. I understand that this may cause issues with numbers but this may solve the numbers issue in the first place and could bring players back.

What do you guys think about this situation, if i am correct in the fact that this is how the match ups are based?

A:

Don’t worry. Team players will never be soloqueing once they add the leaderboards, so the ’’100’’ is never gonna put up the team 2 rating.

You’re absolutely correct in your scenario though, it’s an borderline unwinnable scenario for team 2. The only way for team 2 to win is if team 1 majority kittens up. This is why the ’’100’’ player will never play without his ’’100’’ teammates or in a ’’100’’ premade once the ratings matter.

Oh and, there will never be any solo queing 100s (asusming it’s a number for a high rating), so don’t worry about that part.

Yes, I don’t know if you watched the interview with developers on twitch or not but from what i gathered, before we get a live leader board we are going to be getting a ranking list, not showing our rating but showing our standing, this will not show how far rank 1 is off rank 2 in rating though.

That wont stop making people care about their spot. For example, me and my entire team will never pug/soloq ever again once the leaderboards come out, since it’ll hurt our teams average.

ANet more than likely has the metrics for determining a weighted solo-q ranking system if it ever mattered but it likely won’t in the near future. When they add rankings and the weekly tournament rotations, all of these things will be/are team centric in the current system (tournies being team focused just about always irregardless of the system). Even the current queuing system is set-up in such a way as to encourage team formation: solo-q till you hit a wall of probabilities -> form team -> grow as team & climb the ladder -> partake in weekly tournaments.

The replacing of HJ with CA will probably help give solo-q breathing room for play without worry about ranking or stupid zergs/mechanics. But the ranked aspect of the game will be about teams.

^Which is what I fear the most, it’s an absolutely kitten idea and it’s why Guild wars 1 failed as an esport despite being such an amazing game. The majority of players in any game will always be soloplayers. And a huge part of those soloplayers will want to be able to play competitively and be aknowledged as a skilled player without having to pick up the chore of playing with a full team.

Hopefully arenanet understands that or this game will never grow past the tournaments arenanet will host on their own.

And whether the leaderboard says you are rank 2 or rank 200 will that take away the fact that you are a good player? I think it is a poor excuse to not solo again.
Ranking won’t determine anything but give you a position its not like a rank 2000 person is 2000th in skill level at the game. Since there will be no class breakdown of the leader boards it is going to be a terrible representation of anything outside of w/l

If the population recovers, you’re likely going to get split queues, but growing a team environment at this stage of the game isn’t bad if they give you adequate tools for solo play and competition. Which leads us to…

Custom Arenas allow for the creation of solo play tournaments at player/community discretion. The best GW1 had was skirmishes… If my understanding of the breathe and flexibility of CA is adequate, you should be able to have whole tournament rotations built with any number of rules ranging from solo-q duel arenas to 8v8 team zerg fests.

I know we’d love to have “official” solo-q ladders but I think they are trying to avoid splitting the “official” competition for now but they aren’t stopping us from making our own ladders or groups hosting whole tournaments for solo with their own ultimate rankings.

This is something that GW1 severely lacked.

I have a sponsor that cares about where I place.

Further, unless we get top tiered opponents we aren’t going to get good matches. If I soloque around and get stomped by fullteams my rating will drop, meaning the teams average will drop. And if my team does it we are most likely going to get waste of time opposition where we have to grind ourselves up only to get smashed by teams again.

naw thx.

I hope that the ranking and rating is individual based so no matter solo or in a team, player is judged by his performance and not the outcome of his team carrying his weight if the player is not worthy. Thus solo players can still compete and have good rankings/ratings though not as effectively as premades. This way SPVP won’t lose out on its solo players fan base. The criteria for ratings should be balanced and made known to us properly, bunkers and GC should have a balance way to be rated for good play.

I don’t get how you can be correctly rated in a solo que even if pre-mades didn’t exist as your team composition is random regardless. In gw1 it made sense for Hero battles since that really was all on your own but how does an individual rating for solo que even make sense in a team based game where your effectivity depends on teams, and those teams are random, and likely even more affected by “build wars” than anything else. A solo que leaderboard just doesn’t make sense to me to begin with given those factors. MMR should’ve been team-based from the get-go.
If it’s not a 1v1 format is won’t adequetly track 1v1 skill as I see it. It’s like Micheal Jordan in his prime joining a random basketball team full of a couple 7 year olds , 2 high-school ballers and a college-baller trying to carry vs a team randomly composed that just so happens to be NBA ballers throughout. It’s luck based how do you properly rank that and why would you want to be ranked in that system knowing that?

If solo joiners want a place to be ranked to show off their skill individually than they’d need a format for 1v1 individual skill like Hero-battles.

I think in reality that individual skill is shown by action and not statistics if you’re a solo-joiner because in terms of team success it’s not just about you in a team game.
So solo-joiners ideally should not be giving a dam about appearing on a leaderboard to begin with and if they did they’d be on a team.

The great forum duppy.

if a player solo queue and become the leader of roster, kicks the other 4 person and invite his 4 buddies into roster individually, not using party. Will he be rated as solo joiner or premade now? can easily be abused to get high solo ratings/rankings

Lulz even more complication. but that’s just more reason why solo-join should be exempt from any sense of ranking.
If you want adequete competition, but you’re casual to the point of not finding a team. You should be in Custom Arena’s. At least that is what always made sense to me.

haha!good point there bro. Hope they have a new game mode thats only for 1v1. Easier to satisfy the competitive solo players who wants to see how they are ranked globally
