A lot of the questions on here have been answered in the past already. So let me answer a couple for you so they don’t waste time during the cast; double stating what they have already told us.

1: Yes, you can solo Q into the game mode.
2: Yes it will have its own Q’s
3: Yes it will have its own leader board
4: When time runs out, if both lords are up, the team with the most points wins. This is how it already works in the event of a tie and how it will continue to work.
5: No, this is not GvG so stop saying that. It is sPvP.

What’s the GvG then? All I hear is Stronghold being the new GvG?

they are saying that because along with it will come a guild leaderboard

I’m still amazed that WvW people “created” their own version of “GvG” completely ignoring the official gamemode established in GW1, and when that gamemode gets a successor in GW2 they say “it’s not real GvG” because it’s not the zergfest they created. I’m just speechless.

Personally, I am impress because those WvWer (all 100 of them) manage to railroad development of the game and got their unsupported game format a custom built location for them to zerg till the cows come home.

I consider a bunker build any build designed to hold a position for a specific amount of time, and they all share a common factor: they are very annoying to fight and suck the fun out of the game. A bunker healer guardian, a shout warrior, a turret engy, MM necro..all these are bunker spec in my eyes; the new game mode will not promote them for sure, yet it won’t make them unviable, if anything they’ll become a choice rather than a necessity.

I’m not amazed. The game is called “Guild Wars” but didn’t come with a GvG game mode or any way to tell who the best guilds are. So the community created their own competition between guilds, and have invested 2-3 years worth of time and energy into it. As far as them claiming it’s not real GvG… that just becomes a matter of opinion. Some people think 5 players is not enough to represent a guild of 500. Other guilds might only have 6 people and don’t think it’s fair that you have to have 10, 15, 20+ to compete.

But at the end of the day who really cares what people are saying about it? At this point we’re still at 90%+ speculation and nothing that’s being discussed now is going to matter later (aside from feedback to Anet that they may consider)

However regarding casual friendliness two things bother me.

1. In the news article you linked they mention dueling in several of the rolls. I hope its not just dueling builds and duelers and gankers running around. That would not be casual friendly.

2. I worry about stealth. A bunch of Thieves and Mesmers running around would not be casual friendly.

Acutally 3 things. 5v5 is not a casual friendly format. Hopefully the custom arenas will be easily accessible and well used. I’d prefer a separate bracket for 8-12v8-12 instead of custom arenas.

I think one fundamental question that needs to be asked and answered is how ArenaNet is making sure that every profession has a wide spectrum of viable roles.

In Conquest it is apparent that some professions are simply not fit for certain roles. Is this somewhat applicable to Stronghold as well? How to make sure that every profession brings something to the table and is worth taking?

In the blog post, the authors give much space to the ‘roles’ topic, but it is hard not to imagine some professions like elementalist being superior to others just because of how relatively versatile they are by design. The question is quite personal for me, because I have been in a limbo for over a year hoping for some changes to necros that would make them more usable in competitive PvP, which never happened.

The rationale behind the question is past experiences with how Anet handled the balancing, with months or even years of some professions being unfit for PvP and/or PvE (some examples are the initial warrior in PvP, necro or ranger in PvE/PvP).

How is that different than Guardians, Engis, and Warriors being better bunkers than thief mesmer and rangers? In Conquest there are specific roles too, that some classes simply do better.

The thing is “casuals” never liked stealthies, engi turrets and >insert bad l2p threads<. Class specific QQs will never change. That’s in every MMO.

What bothers me is the 1v1’s at treb, 2v2’s at defense/offense and 1v1’s at supply depots. They say you don’t need to be good in pvp but there’s bound to be a roamer somewhere right?

I’m beginning to think this whole thing is as a result of wvw so firmly rejecting their attempts to add more pve elements in to wvw (like when they pushed LS into it), so instead they’ve decided to make pvp more like pve.

From the sounds of it so far, stability will be key to capping objects as well as having a good 1v1 build (5 players, spread across two paths and several objectives).

I wonder how long it will take for a team to work out the fastest way to charge straight down your attacking path and gank your lord whilst your building up supplies/split teaming, or all come down one path and prevent you getting anywhere along your attacking path.

Will be interesting to see the layout and mechanics.

If you don’t agree then please do contest my points and let me know what you think, I may be missing something, Cheers!

Stronghold will be the downfall of GW2 PvP. The hype train just hasn’t slammed into the station at full speed yet.

Response to OP’s points
Capture Points: Thinking capture points makes for a bad game is extremely short-sighted. If it’s solely because of bunkers, then you haven’t PvP’ed in a while. Bunker builds have been pretty much dead since TCG lost WTS China, and even before then, they were a dying breed. Players at the top tiers learned to play the map better and in doing so, could out-perform a team with dedicated bunkers.

If you dislike capture points, you should hate Stronghold too. Stronghold has fixed objectives (gates, supply depot) that can be easily denied by a very defensive build. The profession and build may change, but the concept is the same. For example, a turret engi could just set up at the supply depot. In fact, the heavy importance of the single supply depot makes the defensive player position more influential to gameplay.

Roles: The roles described in the article are dreams – not reality. Players will always ignore designer intent and go straight to the most efficient strategy, especially when combat vs. players can be minimized. For example, in Alterac Valley from WoW, a 40v40 PvP area with NPC-backed objectives, the two opposing zergs just run past each other in the middle and turn it into a PvE race. In early GW2 PvE, players constantly farmed quick and easy dungeons, even with diminishing returns, instead of doing different paths to prevent diminishing returns.

Out of whatever remains of worthwhile objectives, there will be a handful of builds which are so much better at a specific role that any other build for that role won’t be worth playing. For example, GS/Sword warrior for supply running. It has the survival, mobility, and access to stability to just constantly channel and run supply and won’t be stopped before reaching the supply return point. GS/sword warrior already does this with the orb on Spirit Watch, which is a big reason why Spirit Watch is the worst conquest map.

Casual Appeal: This is a double-edged sword. Yes, the point of each objective is more clear and it seems like there’s a lot to do at first glance. First, when there are many objectives with different functions, there is a large opportunity for bad choices. Luckily most of these choices will be known to be bad with some experience and the community will quickly arrive at a simple meta which ignores many map mechanics. There go the choices.

However, you’ll always have new people who don’t know or don’t care to learn which choices are bad. For example, I still see people in conquest double-capping uncontested nodes. You also have the optimized builds for each role described previously. Put all that together and Stronghold chat will quickly turn into a toxic quagmire like you see in MOBAs. When a player goes for an objective that isn’t worthwhile, they’ll be chastised. If they do something useful but with a poor build for that, they’ll be called out. When that team loses, people will get mad and take it out on that player. At a casual level, simplistic optimized builds will carry players and teams, just like turret engineers do in conquest.

My Additional Points
Observers: Stronghold will be no better than conquest for viewers and will likely be worse. Like conquest, Stronghold divides players between many locations at once. You can’t focus on any one fight without missing another. The fights are still laden with particle effects ending in “Oh, someone died”. And if you focus on a fight, you quickly lose the big picture. But unlike conquest, which has a relatively simple to grasp indication of lead and momentum, stronghold’s indicators are more plentiful and less concrete. Further, watching players fight NPCs is kinda boring.

In my opinion, conquest wasn’t well received by viewers because the focus was misplaced in early shout-casting. The part of conquest which has more appeal to the less knowledgeable observer is the map-level: the score, who is losing or gaining nodes, and player positions. Instead, focus was on fights, which was a mess of particle effects where even knowledgeable observers couldn’t see most of what was happening. This was exacerbated by early bunker-heavy strategies which lead to less dynamic map play.

The snowball argument for conquest is mostly born out of disparate skill levels between the teams. When teams who are closely matched in skill play each other, the match is often back and forth with close scores. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stronghold snowballed too.

Complexity: Conquest is simple – get to 500 points first by holding combinations of three nodes. If you have less nodes than an opponent, you have more free people with which to assault a point to turn it back in your favor. Yet it’s deep at the same time. There’s depth in which builds you put on a team, how you play that team composition, which nodes you push or guard and when, how you deal with players dying, etc. Secondary mechanics spice it up.

Stronghold is overly complex, which will likely cause it to lack the depth it’s trying to provide through its complexity. To make all the options worthwhile, the cost and benefit from each needs to be tightly tuned. Otherwise, a single choice will always be the best, eliminating any chance at depth. For example, if skirt sappers die too easily to players, why even pick them? If they’re very hardy against players, offensive archers are pointless and you just use a Wall of Reflection on the NPC gate guards and laugh.

NPCs: Unless the AI is better by leaps and bounds than any other game, it will be too easily to take advantage of their weaknesses. In that case, they just feel like giant HP punching bags.

Audience: In PvP, you have a lot of “factions”. Some people want pure team deathmatch/annihilation (some small like 2v2 or 3v3; others large like GW1 GvG and GW2 GvG). Others like conquest and enjoy its depth, which fuels its competitive nature. Still others just want something different. Stronghold caters only to the last group. Unfortunately, that last group is the most fickle and likely to find the next “new toy” once they tire of the current one.

It’s worth noting that conquest has a shortcoming here as well. Because the depth is implicit, it’s hard for new players to learn. The initial frustration drives people away, leaving you with a small PvP base compared to WvW and PvE.

My Conclusion
I’m saying that stronghold will be the downfall of GW2 PvP for the following reasons. First, it doesn’t appeal to competitive PvPers, yet so far there has heavy emphasis on stronghold and nothing on conquest for the future. If this comes to fruition, it will alienate the top and drive them away. Second, stronghold’s more rigid roles and hodgepodge of mechanics has all the foundations very toxic PvP environment (described previously). If that does happen, it turns away the casual players it’s aiming to recruit.

The best thing that can happen is that Stronghold serves a way to get new players into PvP and prepare them to advance into conquest.

It is sPvP.

Source? Particularly for #2.

You cant kill something that is already dead, the % of people in this game that does pvp y very marginal, the % that does pvp “seriously” even less so. As you mentioned pvp as it stands its a mess of particles and button mashing. It is likely arena net figured it was time to do or die on the pvp and their wishful esport front.

The term Exploit means nothing in GW2 –

I bet you’re one of those guys that sleeps with tin foil hats at night.

Your drawn-out, pessimistic, opinionated essay doesn’t mean anything because you haven’t played the gamemode. You’re saying the game will fail; with no supportive evidence from anything. Not even an example of past implementations that Anet did to strengthen your argument.

No, using examples drawn from GW2 as well as from other MMORPGs which implemented similar mechanics doesn’t count I guess.

You’re saying the game will succeed without any supporting evidence (even though there has been quite a bit published or data-mined). Sorry, but I never liked kool-aid.

I’ve never said the game will succeed, on any thread. All I’ve expressed were optimism. You are blatantly saying the game will fail under false pretenses.

Stronghold will be successful! The main reason is that it’s the first game mode released after probably what will be 3 years of the same boring conquest! People are tired of conquest and will flock to play Stronghold! Stronghold will also bring the WvWers to PvP because it’s similar to the WvW playstyle! And it will bring PvEers to PvP maybe because they advertised that you don’t actually have to be good at the game to play it! But the future of GW2 PvP! Doubt it! I don’t think it will be competitive at all! Just some casual funsies!

As one of the thousands that walked away from this game around 6 months after its launch due to the stale, unoriginal, boring, tedious game mode that was Conquest, I am very excited after all this time to MAYBE give this game another chance. This is the game mode I expected years ago…all my friends who quit around the same time are thinking the same thing. This very well could bring a bunch of us back….only time will tell.

I forgot, little OT but very very important:

Balance Frequency

With HoT we’ll have 9 new specs (A LOT of new stuff) + 1 new prof. Without a fast balance, the entire pvp scene risks to collapse.

Have you plan to speed up (at least 1 month) the balance frequency and not a 6 month old meta anymore?

I think is really crucial.

The first thing that came to my mind is how players without teamspeak will know what npcs to spawn. For example i think that we need to push so i take some supplies and i go to summon some doorbreakers. But the team disagrees and want to push with archers. Everyone call names each other and the game becomes unfun. I mean as fas as i understand this game mode needs a strong strategy to succed. And teams that arent able to communicate throught teamspeak they wont be able to pull it off.

My questions:

  • Regarding supply: Are you slowed down while carrying supply? Is the distance from movement enhancing effects like ride the lightning reduced while carrying supply? Are you able to use the portal while carrying supply?
  • Regarding Lord: How many players do you need to actually kill the lord? How strong is he compared to the foefire lords?
  • Regarding Doors: How strong are they? How long would it f.e. take a gs berserker warrior to kill the door? Are you only able to take it down with the help of the skritts? Can the treb hit the doors?
  • Regarding Archers: How many are spawned spawned for one supply? How many archers to you need to take down the guards on their own?
  • Regarding Guards: Are they resetting (full healing) once out of combat?

First, try it out.
AFTER that, we can talk about what we like, and what we don’t. I’m sure a lot of the game elements are up for discussion IF it is constructive and well-argued.

Personally I don’t think PvE Elements are a knock-out-factor IF they don’t get out of hand (keep in mind the pve elements in the popular moba games seems to be just fine for their players).

This gamemode will have its own guild ladder (because this is GvG), so it’s pretty obvious that it’ll come with its own que.

I’d like to see a source for #1 because I’m sure that won’t happen. Soloque on a guild ladder? Maybe he’s talking about hotjoin.

It should atleast be 8vs8 or 10 vs 10. Gawd, i was hoping for some Fort Aspenwood action again, but GW2 seems to continue to go way to small to get some serious action, planning ang strategy.

GW2 HOT with its new stronghold game mode will only be worth it if specs actually change. Hopefully they use the opportunity of the expansion to fix mechanics which simply don’t work like necro life siphon and the dominance of passive sigil procs (and many other issues). Weapons like thief shortbow should probably see total reworks to reduce its spammable mobility, necro scepter should be reworked so its a condition weapon (scepter 3), and the game should be re-balanced with MUCH less evades and therefore less auto attack damage (sigils, mesmer, etc). Perhaps the total removal of vigor and the rebalancing of all weapon skills which cause evades would be a good start.

Will Stronghold affect the personal Leader Boards as well as the Guild Leader Board? If so, won’t this ‘cause players who worry about their rating to not PvP with a weaker guild they’re a part of and preventing the accurate estimation of guild strength?

Hey!
Here are my questions:

1.) Are there going to be any consequences to dying? Do you lose your supply? Do you get a rather long respawn timer? Do you think about something like death penalty?(not exactly the same bit similar)

2.) What are the rewards for playing stronghold? Does the whole guild get points they can invest in something(like a guild hall or something) or do you just continue to use the reward tracks?

EDIT: 3.) Will there be an observer mode like in Guild Wars 1?

Some thoughts:
I personally think a soloQ could bring more harm than good. It might discourage some players because of the lack of options to communicate in the game. Especially since this game mode seems to be all about tactics and communication. Plus, if you think how you’re going to have different “roles” what if 5 people queue to play the same role. If multiple classes can fill that role how is anet supposed to detect that? What do you guys think?

I think this game mode sounds very promising but I’ve been burned before by anet. :P

I think if they want to attract the max amount of players to Stronghold, they really need two different versions.

5v5 is too small for casual PvP’ers. But anything over 5v5 is too many for competitive PvP’ers.

Custom arenas are ok but it just splits the community too much. Two versions would be better.

A competitive bracket with 5v5. A non-competitive or casual bracket with 8-12v8-12.

The article highlighted that there will be some casual/PvE-friendly role(s) in this gamemode, there is no further reason to minimalize the need for individual skill by increasing the team sizes imo.

So play the competitive 5v5 bracket. I’m telling you casual players like larger teams. 5 is too small.

Casuals like bigger numbers because they want to slack off and still have a chance of competing, because the larger the group size, the less impact on each individual’s skills, so 1 of 8 people being bad is not as bad as 1 of 5 people being bad.

By that logic Soccer and Football wound’t be competitve because they have much more then 5 players on the team? You are using flawed logic.

Obviously, you don’t know what flawed logic means.

Not all 11 players on each side are active at anytime. In football (real football) certain players have certain roles and there are rules (american football) in place that limit the type of actions each player can take. Which means not every player has the possibility of being active at every moment.
In Football, the 2 sub rule and 90 minutes are a hard limitations in place that prevents players from running around trying to be active in every encounter. In American football, the size difference and roles prevents every players from doing that as well.

In guild wars 2 however they are no such hard rules and no hard role (no tank or healer only character, everybody is dps). Which means that player can just zerg to left and zerg to the right and zerg everywhere and zerg to the sun and zerg to the moon. So every encounter than end up being a spell slinging.

As u know im pro. ~Tomonobu Itagaki
