I genuinely enjoy sPvP in GW2, but every day it’s becoming harder and harder for me to justify spending time playing it since there are no more long term goals, nothing more to achieve ever since I was bumped up to r80. Previously I could look forward to a lifetime of playing and reaching ever higher ranks and goals – enough to keep me busy for the next 5 years.

But now, I have nothing. No point playing for gold or gear since I can do a more efficient job of it in PvE. I have Legendary Champion and there is literally nothing else for me to do!

Now I know there are a few people for whom mere “fun” appears to be enough. But for me, the reason I play an MMO is to make up for the lack of progression in my own eventless life, and so “fun” isn’t a primary factor. It’s not the driving psychological need. The thing that keeps me coming back to play a game is the progression. Some sense that I’m getting better and better in some measurably regard that is also publicly visible.

Already, since people can’t see ranks at the end of the match it has ruined quite a bit of my goal. The saving grace is that my finisher is still visible. But it’s just a matter of time before everyone gets dragon. In the old system, I would have moved on to higher levels by that time but now there’s no more progression and nothing to differentiate me from someone who reaches dragon rank 1 year from now.

So my heartfelt wish is for Anet to introduce new progressions for r80 players. I’m not talking about ladder ranks etc, but something more solid. More titles or something. Anything, because really I like sPvP so much, I just need some token form of progression. But that little bit of progression is necessary for me to keep playing.

Ultimately an MMO fills a void in my life. And “fun” isn’t the key to filling that void. So far, the hallmark of MMORPG games has been leveling, grind, getting ever higher gear and ranks and titles and what not. I invested a substantial chunk of time into sPvP as I was delighted at the prospect of goals that were nowhere in sight. And I suddenly feel let down as I find myself bumped to r80.

So please Anet…give me something more to achieve!

That’s a very fair assessment of your motivation and probably applies to a lot of hardcore players, myself included.

But honestly I don’t see anything happening within the next few weeks/months. sPvP has only just gotten a new progression system and it will take a while for ANet to revisit the issue.

sPvP has always been the weakest aspect of the game and the one that retains the fewest players and adds the least amount of monetization. I don’t imagine it getting much revision anytime soon.

If you want a real long-term goal, try chasing some of those WvW achievements. Now that’s a long-term goal.

Your notion of progression frankly is quite absurd. Titles are more solid than ladders? Seriously?

Well as you said, you are losing perspective. In the end no matter what you do or what you want this will still be a game. If you feel the need to prove yourself that you doing something worthy you might want to reconsider how you spend your time. No offense.

Life itself is a game. It’s all meaningless and GW2 is as important (or as unimportant) as life itself. At least that’s my opinion.

I didn’t get your point. Are you saying that I shouldn’t use video games to fulfill my illusion of progression? If so, what is your reasoning? Do we really want to turn this into a philosophical discussion?

If I had known beforehand that Anet would pull ranks from under my feet this is indeed what I would have done. But at the time there was no way I could have seen this coming. When I started out in beta, sPvP gave a lot more progression than WvW. And if I start WvW now, I’ll be at a huge disadvantage having started so late.

I’ve been earning my sPvP ranks since the start of GW2. Now…I feel like a bait and switch has been pulled on me.

Precisely my point. The amazing thing is that creating a carrot takes so little effort and costs no one anything and doesn’t take away any enjoyment from anywhere else. We already had a nice juicy carrot called ranks and Anet took that away without giving us any other carrot in return.

This attitude baffles me. Why not give carrots when it doesn’t cost anyone anything to create them?

No game can please everybody for their entire life. The devs are working hard to make the game balanced and more fun for the 99.99% of the GW2 population that has not “finished PVP.”

That being said, maybe they could introduce a new title that requires as much rank points to get as the old Rank 80 did. That’d certainly deal with all these threads since then you could proudly display your PvP grind above your name tag.

Leaderboards don’t make me happy because they’re temporary. Your character doesn’t “progress”…unless it’s a leaderboard that tracks constantly increasing points.

For example, PvE has achievement leaderboards: https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/eu/achievements

I would be very happy with this with PvP rank points instead of achievements, but a title to show ff varying tiers would be ideal.

A ladder with seasons ala SC2 or LoL, each season with unique pvp rewards, would go a very long way towards fixing this.

Getting tops on leaderboards is cool, but its improbable in team arena if you don’t have a few other competent people to play with, and partially luck based, partially cheese build based in solo arena. Ultimately there’s not much (some, but not much) point to doing it.

Getting all the champ titles can be fun, and what I’m working on now. I wish there was an achievement / title for getting every profession champion though.

Does one get a title that can be displayed for unlocking every track? I don’t think so though I could be wrong. Champion Brawler is nice…though it would be even nicer if there were intemediate titles I could display along the way.

The psychology is that there have to be tiny carrots along the way to the big carrot.

Even with the disregard behind ranks, there hasn’t been any word from ANet that they even took any of the suggestions behind increasing the tiers for champ titles seriously.

If they did make this change it would show time played/experience in a particular class for winning x-amount of tournaments. (150 wins for the title is a joke for people that have hundreds/thousands of games won a particular class, but the title itself makes it seem like 2000 games won is equivalent to 150 games won)

Of course I am saying that. Do I really need to elaborate on why you shouldn’t be doing that?

The problem though, is that you perceive several things as progress, which in a PvP context are quite irrelevant. Progress is being as competitive as you can, not collect titles or finishers.

Calling something “weak” without giving reasons why it’s weak seems to me to be a very lazy way of having a meaningful discussion.

For all you know, our universe is a simulation. A huge MMORPG. But even if it isn’t people attach different values to it. You take real life seriously? Good for you. But unless you have proof of a god or eternal hell or whatever, you can’t logically make that an absolute claim and say that life has to be more important than GW2. Or more unimportant.

I still believe they will implement new ranks for Deathmatch games and maybe increase some other ranks like the champion for tournement wins. At release, 150 wins were quite a lot, as tournement was paid for. That changed of course and should be fairly simple to implement.

About WvW. It is different from sPvP but still, joining now would be not that bad of an idea if you like the format. The handycap for having no WvW ranks is negligible, as it gives only points for atk or def against npc’s and better handling of siege weapons. In small roaming this should not matter. Also, those ranks are easily to farm by now, especially with birthday boost. It comes down to the question if you can get warm with the format, as it is quite different from what you are used in sPvP and the balance is way off with buff food and zergs etc.

Just add intermediate titles for champ brawler @ 500/1000/2500/5000/7500. Would be a bit more “clean” than doing one for each class at x thousand wins or whatever. Perhaps add in a title for collecting the class champ titles at 2/4/6/8 too. Those two alone would be good enough imo for longer term general progression.

I agree with op, ladders are nothing for me as I don’t have a permanent team for tpvp.
Ladder = Team success, not something to be achieved personally.
I would need something that only depends on my personal efforts to be achieved.
Also there’s no rewards, or “displaying” options for ladders. Most of players are even unaware of ladders.
Leaderboards are only accessed via a website, doesn’t connected to the game itself.
You don’t get something “visually shiny” from ladders to brag about.
I’m personally at R66, and I still have long way to 80(and beyond for legendary champion title), but I can understand op. More hardcore goals are needed.

I was quite happy setting ranks as a goal. For me, progressing ranks was “fun”. I think there are a lot of people here who are trying to tell others why they should play. At this stage of life when I’m 31 years old, I think I know what’s good for me and what’s not. I don’t think it keeps a healthy population it only keeps to the extreme fringe. If you are currently r80 you are probably part of a very small and subset.

With that said, some people want meaningless ranks others want ladders if Anet wants to cater to both good for them, but for the overrall game ladders is better than rank.

Hi bhagwad.4281!

I feel empathy for your situation. I also enjoy seeing my character progress and become better. (Titles, Game Play, Unique Skins, etc)

Things to make you stand out. I have just finished one of my long term goals of acquiring all of the legendary weapons my favorite profession can use. Even if it’s a weaker weapon I will rarely if ever use. (I’m looking at you Frenzy)

I was in a spot where I wondered where my next bit of progression would be. I have decided to go for 300% magic find next. This will take me quite a while if I don’t just buy it all with gold. For now I have been having fun salvaging and watching my MF trickle upwards. I would like to offer this as a suggestion. PvP loot will be affected by it, and even when you hit the 300% cap, there is potential for them to raise it higher. You can technically still add MF at the cap but it doesn’t increase the numbers. I assume this means it will be raised in the future. Cheers!

I am with OP in this.

My main driving force into PvP was that previously PvP offered an infinite “end game” character development in form of gaining higher and higher ranks. I calculated that I could have easily 7-8 years time to get to r80.

I assume that there are two kind of players which A-net propably tries to cater:

a) those who are motivated by finishing simple achievments and moving on (in GW2 PvP case to another games propably)

b) those who are motivated by having target that they can work towards not nececcarily reaching it ever but enjoy the open ended track.

I am solid category b) player. I hope that our kind will have new long term permanent target (not any temporary ladders or similar). I intend to play the MMO that I choose for years like I wid with Everquest 1-2 (14 years). This is very low cost investment to fix and make group of players happy.

I know you play for fun, but if it’s not fun anymore, then take a break yo! Play WvW for fun til they do something with PvP to add in another false sense of progression. Ranks in PvP are really only the XP of PvP. Until they fix the way players are grouped in solo, the leaderboards don’t mean a thing.

I know you said you think you’d be at a disadvantage in WvW, but getting your level up on sounds like the thing you like and WvW has that in spades.

The sad thing is I find PvP incredibly fun but like I mentioned, that’s not why I play an MMO. For me, fun is an awesome benefit and one that will make me choose one game over the other all other things being equal. But the primary motivation is character progression.

I really wish now that I had devoted time to WvW instead of PvP. I have four lvl 80 alts and since I like the adrenaline rush of PvP and I could also play alone, I found it to be much more satisfying than running around breaking doors. If you think that a finisher and a few skins that some people might not have was ever meaningful progression, then I’m sorry but you need to reevaluate what that word means to you. WvW was always the pvp type with the most progression, but I get that you didn’t like it because it’s more about zergs than individuals. This update has brought the closest thing to progression that this type of pvp can have and I think it’s a massive improvement over the old system. Also it leaves room for them to add new things for r80s and everyone inbetween.

Improving your level of skill is your progression, you are in a competitive game mode, you are against other player. This is why leader boards are the progression and the reward is the feeling of improvement, being better than other players and being the best at your class. These should be your goals, not some number saying you have played for a while.

Look at LoL is has no progression like ranks in GW2 PvP, you dont get a skin as a reward in LoL just for playing X amount of game. The progression is going up the ranks and the reward is “im better than xx% of this games population” and the rewards they do get you need to be gold+ for the good stuff and that’s once every season.

What we need is a better leader board system (possibly one with division like LoL could work) and a reward for being in the top % of player and not just for playing the game for a while.

This is a competitive game mode and it should be its main focus, adding other long term progression just spreads out the focus.

A “feeling of improvement” cannot be passively displayed as an achievement. Without a title, or a skin, the feeling itself is meaningless since the whole idea is to have the progression easily visible to other people. Otherwise for me, there’s no point in having the feeling.

How does having other long term goals harm anyone? You say it spreads out the focus. Does it matter? Some people like me will aim for them. Those who don’t like it won’t aim for them.

So far, I see zero downside to having both types of rewards no?

anything that can be farmed will not be anything meaningless, look at pve, legendaries are meaningless, rank 50 were meaningless because skyfarmer and hj farmer.
you will never get anything meaningful if you can get them through farming.
you should go win that legend tournament, that will be truely meaningful.

I disagree. Farming requires work and is very meaningful for me. Try taking away the legendaries from PvE’ers by saying “Oh, you just farmed them!” and see how kittened off they will be

I love farming. And if can have fun along with farming, that’s the perfect combination. Ultimately I chose to play an MMO like GW2 because farming has been a constant in MMOs right from day 1. And as a former GW1 player, farming was an integral part of that game.

If Anet takes away farming, I can assure you most of the player base will quit.

Do you not show how good you are in a game? I’m pretty sure that is showing that you have improved at the game. is that not enough for you? well it doesn’t matter because im sure Anet will add finishers, titles and skills for people who are at the top of the leader board. You seem to think ANet will not integrate rewards into the leader board system, there dose not need to be separate progression systems in pvp, it can all be done in the leader board system.

Lol, thanks for the invite . My problem is that after a while, everyone will have dragon finishers and legendary champion titles. And the idea isn’t to show off skill while actually playing, but also while just standing around doing nothing. Or having the title display when you step into the PvE world, you know?

Wins or losses in a sPvP are hardly ever caused by a player who is awesome at fighting. It’s all about rotation, coordination, and communication. Dragon finishers have show off value now, but because progression comes to a halt with it, it’s just a matter of time before it’s not rare anymore.

Basically where do I go from here in terms of progression?

If you think that a finisher and a few skins that some people might not have was ever meaningful progression, then I’m sorry but you need to reevaluate what that word means to you.

Skins are finishers are meaningful to me. It may not be meaningful to you – which is cool since no one will force you to chase then.

Different things motivate different people right?

It’s not that it was just meaningless to me. It was meaningless to a lot of people. That’s why the population dropped so much a couple months after launch, that’s why my friends stopped playing, and it’s also part of why a lot of competitive pvpers quit. The game hardly rewarded people that put a lot of time into it and therefore couldn’t keep people drawn in to play it.

I understand where you’re coming from, but being honest here you’re a minority of a minority. It’s not that what you are saying is necessarily wrong, but many other people wished for a better system than the previous one and I think this new system is a good step towards that.
