Because Ele either have ridiculously OP AoEs making point assault near impossible for all melee, or they Heal a crapload AoE causing the opposite yet same result.
Its the same reason people used to kill the Necro before trying to boon/rip condition stack the bunker.
Eles are hard to play and have mediocre burst builds. So most people hit the elementalists first under the assumption that they’re stricking the equivalent of thieves without stealth, which is usually true.
That being said, bunker eles are very strong, and targetting and trying to kill defensive fortresses while their frail backstab partners are free to do what they want is a terrible idea.
So if you’re a bunker ele, be happy that people go for you first: it means they are wasting their time trying to kill you while they’re being bursted by your party members.
If you are a burst ele, well, good luck. Your best bet is to appear at the middle of a zerg, and spam some aoes while the opponents can’t notice you in the middle of the confusion. You don’t have stealth and illusions, so you can’t do much.
So Ive got a couple chars but I’ve noticed when I play my ele in pvp I am the first target and often have the entire team on me. But other classes not. Whats up with this? Do people hate ele’s or somethin?

Good. Yes, I’m ardently against the overpoweredness of elementalists. Any kid with an IQ less than 50 points can play them and be almost invincible while dealing insane damage, having insane mobility, insane condition removal, etc, etc. Not to mention their absolutely ridiculous kittening down state. When will at least their down state be fixed? I’m sure arenanet will buff it and everything else, as well as every other profession even more (except thieves, they will receive more unjustified nerfs). Good job once again!

We see the elementalist as the king of versatility. The skill ceiling for the Ele is exceptional, as the ability to leverage all four attunements at the right time is crucial for understanding the elemetnalist. The Ele boasts some of the best team support and control abilities in the game, as well as some great area of effect damage.
To exceptional skill ceiling equal exceptional gameplay…I can see the tears of haters while maniacally laughing over their cold bodies
