Mesmers are stomping me. I’ve picked up some stuff that helps me fight them just from observation but I think I need to play one if I’m really going to figure it out. If anyone can take to recommend a build and give a short note on how to play with it would be much appreciated.

Use the build everyone uses.
Sword/Pistol + Staff + Decoy + Moa Morph
Traits and other utilities don’t matter too much, put points where you feel they are right and utilities you like.

look up taugrims “legion” build its what most people are running. Its fairly simple to play. dont just put traits and random utilities you will be useless.

The other 2 posters are right. However, I think the best advice I ever got was control + T the mesmer before the first clone drops. Another sure fire give away clones don’t jump. Another clones don’t back up on their own they keep you in range.

There is a post on here where someone made a Mesmer. With no clue how to play it, he joined pvp and topped the ranks. If you can see well enough to click a few buttons, you can do mesmer.

Not saying mesmers arn’t op but any good player can play any class good. The game isn’t so complex where unless someone devotes all their time into one class he can’t possibly play it well. Meaning that argument is pretty much moot.

To be fair, the Phantasm (or Taugrim’s Legion variant) isn’t what could be considered OP in my book. Dying to Phantasm spam is akin to dying to Hundred Blades or Heartseeker spam. It’s completely your fault. What could be considered OP is the Shatter build, which effectively rips off all boons at all times and can pull off 10k+ bursts every 12 or so seconds while having plenty of extra defense due to the increased clone generation for defensive shatters.

A staff+sword/pistol phantasm build is great for learning the ropes as a mesmer. Spawn your phantasms, try to set up small burst with the sword, mostly just sit on staff, abuse Chaos Armor and Chaos Storm+Phase Retreat, hide behind pillars and what have you. Decoy and Blink are utility skills that are just good on paper but incredible when you know when to use them. The shatters aren’t very complicated. Distortion when you’re finishing or ressing, Cry of Frustration on finishers/Guardian elite heal or similar, Mind Wrack when you immoblize burst and are prepared to recast phantasms. Take your time, mesmer is all about timing and you generally don’t benefit greatly from trading damage.

An important thing to know when you mesmer: always statbuild for pure offense. That means berserker’s amulet and +crit runes. Your skill (and general overpoweredness), not stats, determine your defense and staff alone has counters to every single build people whine about here.
