This game used to have mmr leaderboards for team play and for solo play. Remember that?

Has anyone ever seen a game has a perfect system like this that they worked years to implement, only to then just randomly remove both the solo and team ranked play?

Leagues isnt ranked play. Its just a grind. They literally removed ranked play. The development of this game has been so wierd when you think about it. They have made and discarded great systems. Literally got rid of all the work they did in the past and replaced it will poor systems. I would love to know the internal workings at anet.

Yes, I remember waiting for for 15 minutes between every match to face the exact team that i faced before, with the occasional 5minute queue in between to face a team that consisted of a 2 or 3 men stack and 2-3 solo players who accidentally queued in the wrong arena or something.
The system was probably still better though as it only sucked for teams, whereas the current system sucks for both teams (who actually care about having a good match and not about farming randoms) and solo players.

i found old(non-farm) LB fine, pvp just needed better reward system back then

Pre-December 2014 era was skill based leaderboard.

It had flaws (not showing MMR) but you can copy Overwatch ranking system, it work great for them.
