Removing class stacking from ESL
http://www.twitch.tv/magictoker
I think it’s a great idea and I know a lot of folks have wanted this for some time. As an aside, I’m glad the AG tournaments have this rule. Even though the skill level on the whole is lower, those matches of late have been much more exciting than the pro league ones.

I actually caught a few AG matches last week and they were indeed enjoyable to watch. AG adding the rule was a smart move in my opinion.

Yes. Only because it’s been 3+ years and they haven’t been able to come up with a way to make stacking less toxic.
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
Agreed! It might look bad to implement this rule for the Pro League games, but it looks worse to leave it how it is.
I think that in general, the community (and myself included) would be in favour for the removal of class stacking. However, I think it’s important to highlight why people may not be in favour of removing class stacking, especially in a “professional” tournament. I’m not trying to play devil’s advocate, but merely promoting a more critical appraisal of the issue.
Against class stacking:
1) The meta still sucks. Double chrono bunker and condi rev will still be the go-to comp for most teams, but I do expect to see some variation with the addition of maybe a necromancer. The nerfs are good, but not enough to change many compositions, and I still expect to see many games go to timer. The skill floor ceiling has dropped so drastically to the point that many newer players in the scene can compete at high-tier.
2) More “enjoyable” to watch. Many spectators have a favoured profession and do not play “professionally”. It is more enjoyable to see what competitive players can do with their favoured profession.
3) Less toxicity and more competition. There’s been a lot of demoralization in the community because many players in ESL have been forced off main classes. In combination with the current meta, it is hard to motivate oneself to get better at the game.
In favour of class-stacking:
1) I think the best reason why people might want to keep class stacking is that some teams in ESL have practiced and “figured out” how to play the cheese meta. It would be accordingly unfair to shake up the meta when teams have already put in so much work.
2) Changing up the rules may be harder thank we think it may be. As a professional tournament, this may require permission from arenanet and across-the-board changes in corporate operation. Not to mention that it would look bad when changing up the rules.

This is the part I’m concerned about. The next game isn’t until Jan 11th, I hope that leaves Anet enough time to consider this proposal and get the ball rolling for anything that needs to happen in the background. I also agree that it looks bad to change the rules mid-season, but I still think it should be done.
It won’t happen this pro league, I’m sure. Two reasons:
1) They will most likely want to see how top teams change (or don’t) their set ups/builds in actual tournament after hotfix before applying further changes. We won’t be getting new matches for quite some time and whole season 1 will be ending after.
2) As mentioned, changing rules during the season may cause a lot of fuss.

I agree. I think it’s something that should be looked into for next season at the very least.

Class stacking is a problem because the game is unbalanced. Removing class stacking from tournaments would cover the real problems and make the game look more balanced than it actually is, which might discourage Anet even more to properly balance the game. And “non-pro” players could have to endure this crappy meta even longer …
Just dont know why this did not implemented before pro ligue, think i made a post about it 1,5 ago but no1 cared.

Removing class stacking is the most dangerous idea regarding balance issue management.
Just remove all amulets except sinister and berserker and the ESL games will be awesome to watch.

…but they could fix Matchmaking and class stacking would be impossible in non-pro matches.

I Hate Dumb Teams – nec
I have the 2 best shatter mesmers in the game on my team. I’d rather have balance before class stacking bans. All we do by opting for no class stacking is settle for mediocrity.

So Helseth and Misha moved to NA? Thats breaking news.
i like this idea
I totally agree with a ban on class stacking at least in tournament play. However, there’s something I want to mention:
“When the vast majority of games timer out, no hype and excitement comes from these matches.”
At top level even without a bunker meta this would be inevitable in any game or sport because both sides have a very high standard of play. In Chess for example they’ve been talking about its inevitable draw death for over a century and top level play frequently sees drawish, prosaic openings with high drawing rates. When you have two teams that really know what they’re doing you really have to have a deep understanding and profound awareness to take advantage of any mistakes.
It may not be exciting for the spectators but to us who play the game we like seeing excellent technique, and excellent technique from both sides means timing out due to an acute awareness of defensive rotations.
“By allowing only one unique profession per team you will open up so much more room for diversity. "
I agree with this like stated above, but it begs a deeper question: why do people feel the need for serious class stacking? It’s simply because things aren’t balanced enough for other options in those roles to be considered. There shouldn’t be a need for banning class stacking since taking five different classes should be a clear and obvious choice so as to cover as many gaps as possible. This obviously isn’t the case however, and a class stack ban needs to be instituted.
I think they should remove class stacking for ESL.
Is it the ultimate solution? No. But there’s no reason not to make ESL the best it can be given the circumstance.

I agree 100% class stacking has been a problem in my eyes for the last 3 metas
