I had a few ideas for how matchmaking could go down in season 3 that I would like to share.

A few problems I have with the current system:
-MMR hell
-Poor players don’t have good opportunities to learn from better players
-High level players trolling lower divisions (ruby in particular)

What if we added options for the types of players you want to be matched against upon queue?
1) Players with a lower MMR than you
2) Players with same MMR as you
3) Players with a higher MMR than you

-Queuing with option 1 would need to have an alternative reward to pip gain/loss or reward pips at a much slower rate.
-Option 2 is more or less the current system
-Option 3 would give players the opportunity to learn from how higher level players play and should give an accelerated volume of reward

My hopes here is that instead of high level players trolling lower divisions, making alt accounts, etc. They would choose the option to queue against lower level players when they get tired of playing in legend. Players who queue against others with a higher MMR than themselves would have an opportunity for their own MMR to adjust more accurately upon victory. Players who choose to play against opponents with a higher MMR than them would be directly paired against the opposite group of players choosing to play against an opponent with a lower MMR than them.

I think these kinds of changes would give Glicko different opportunities to calculate more meaningful games and generate a more accurate MMR for players. This also doesn’t force any individual player into any of the 3 situations.

Is there really proof that there are tons of high level players playing on alt accounts. I am not saying it doesn’t happen but does it happen enough that its a real problem. Same with MMR hell. I am not disputing it does exist just how many people are actually stuck in it and if they do change matchmaking isn’t there a chance that what the come up with also has some sort of MMR hell? Almost every game that uses this kind of rating large amounts of people claim they are stuck in MMR Hell. Probably only A-net really know because they have all the data. I don’t really have a strong opinion on what changes could be made for the better but I would perfer not to be placed with people of significantly less experience personally I’ve been playing for a few years now and I don’t feel its fair for me to be placed with players that do not know the basics. To me it really does seem sound to match you with people your skill your skill level and then you play against whoever is near you in the league. If league placement is supposed to be skill based how else are you going to do it? I am interested in ideas I just think what they came up with make sense even if there were some mistakes in implementation. The main thing is do we want league placement to be a sign of skill only. I say aye to that.

Or they can do what successful games do,match all 10 players with same mmr,not 5 with 2000mmr vs 5 with 1500mmr like Anet are doing now….

I would so welcome this

MMR does not always place you with players of your CURRENT skill level – for me most of my bad MMR is historical and not a reflection of my current skill level so yes this would be most welcome

I say keep it simple.
Remove the MMR in Ranked.
Remove cannot lose tiers in Emerald and Sapphire.
Match making via division and tiers and pip range.

i.e You are T2 Ruby and que up. It will try to match you with 9 others in T2 ruby (5 pips). After say 30 sec it broadens the search 1 pip each side. So the search will be last pip T1, all T2, first pip T3 ruby. (7 pips) and every 30 sec it will broaden the search 1 pip each side until 10 are found.

The only thing that is needed is that they remove the safeguards. So ppl can drop tiers & divisions and get matched with and against ppl they should be playing against.

Agree with Locuz. There is no good reason why you shouldn’t be able to drop tiers and divisions at any level. Tie the legendary to something else other than tickets or only give tickets the first time you move up a division.

I’d like it if they removed the “checkpoint” system up until ruby. If I don’t belong in Ruby, I shouldn’t be there draggin down players who belong in Diamond/Legendary.

If not, then atleast drop people into lower divisions if they have 0 PIPS and go 5 losses, currently with nothing to lose, people play like morons draggin down those who deserve to be higher. (speaking from experience)

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.
….. And Elementalist.
