Within the past week, I have noticed a severe decline in my win-to-lose ratio beginning with a single 8-9 loss streak. What was a 50-60% win-rate is now 47%. I am currently losing 70-80% of games played [both ranked and unranked]. Tier 4 ruby to 0 pips in ruby. Disconnects in 20% of games.

I’ve also noticed very sour attitudes in PvP. I have teammates [and have observed players on the opposite team] quit within the first minute due to a lost point or what have you and simply stand in town.

A couple bits of information in the spirit of objectivity:

-I play a ranger/druid. I got to ruby playing a condi variation I was pretty proud of, and switched to a support/power ranger a few days ago [trying something different in the face of what seemed to be a pretty major blocade]
-This is my first season playing ranked PvP.
-I consistently score highest points on a team—even as a support ranger. These points are earned from capping points in rotations, killing persons on or near controlled points, and getting artifacts/beasts when convenient.
-I’ve read PvP strategies here and have watched plenty of online video
-I wasn’t carried to ruby by a team->I Solo Q
-I’m often the only one calling out targets
-I understand rotations
-My losses are not even close 80-90% of the time
—-

So, I guess my specific questions are:

Even if I reach a point where my playing skill level is topped out, I should be stuck in a limbo of sorts: win one lose one win one lose two, etc., right?

I think I have a good understanding of the current MMR. If my initial loss streak lowered my MMR enough, I am now paired with other people in lower MMR brackets. So, the more I lose, the more I lose. Is this correct? If so, it’s pretty awful.

I’m being teamed with people who don’t understand simple rotation strategies, and there is only so much I can type in the minute before a game begins. What are some solutions? I know you can’t pick your teammates if you SoloQ. Most often I’m seen displaying “Don’t forget to cap points! :]” on auto.

The only feedback I get in-game is “get gud,” which, to be honest, is as about as helpful as a fork to the eye. I’m seeing consecutive loss streaks greater than 6, back-to-back, for the first time since I started PvP.

Anyways, to clarify, I’m not trying to whine, I know I can always improve, and I don’t expect a handout. Just wondering what there is to do at this point because PvP is no longer competitive for me.

people complain about a well balanced pvp where you average at 50%, people complain when they play against better players and have a < 50% win rate – what do people want?

I don’t blame you for not reading the wall of text.

The main concern here is loss streaks 6-12 long, regularly. Ranked and unranked.

I wouldn’t worry about winning in ranked tbh. Since the 50/50 ratio is forced just treat it like unranked and have fun with it. Heck, I play s/d thief more often than the metabattle one just for fun (’cause thats why I play).

As for the qq, just hop on an alt character that no one recognizes, hop into a chat tab that doesn’t have /map or /team on it (and whispers depending on preference) so they can’t ruin your experience. Turn on your favorite tunes and just relax haha

If you can’t beat it, it is, needless to say, OP

Once all the nice players who encourage regardless of actual ability get to legend the rest are the ones that aren’t so nice. You should try to rank up to legend at the start rather than near the end of the season

We need solo queue back. This would mitigate a lot of the farming and exploiting.

@OP that was season 2 and 3. We have been told that S4 is trying for even matches with similar skill levels on both sides. Most of my loss streaks ( 68 + at one point ) came partly because I was too kittened off and too tired.

What is your definition of exploit?

By “exploit” I mean farming easy wins against solos with an organized team. This is also probably worthy of being called “trolling.”

Oh, so they’re playing within the confines of the game and not actually doing anything wrong what so ever.

This is also called Playing to Win.

It’s decent rhetoric though! :D

I honestly wish I had more to add besides “pvp is kittened right now”. Anet have four seasons of massive complaints and we can only hope that S5 is a solid improvement.

I relate to a lot of what OP said. What I’m doing right now is simply playing for my enjoyment and focusing on improving my game. Wins/losses/pips be kitten ed

Gee, I wonder why new people don’t stay long.. By extension, I wonder why ANET has to keep getting creative to make queue times stay within reason? That seems to have been a major motivation behind the matches in s2 – s3.

Quite possibly it’s all the “playing to win.”

This is my experience, I just reached diamond yesterday ( that was my goal after 3 seasons in ruby, yay ! ) I played 248 games, I won 127. I got stuck at emerald for a while, then got through sapphire and ruby tier 1-5 with win streaks. Then I got stuck in tier 5-6 for 3 weeks. I play a thief ( with some rerol mesmer ) so the game can really not in my favor depending on the compositions.

Yes, people can get toxic. You don’t since you are a druid but getting a "reroll plz " is really anoying. A lot of people don’t know how to rotate ( I know the basics but I’m not prefect either ) or don’t call for targets.

This is how the match making worked for me : a mix of win and loss. something like 2 wins then two loss, then a win that get you 2 pips because you broke the beginning of a loss streak. I got nights playing 5-10 games and having moved one pips up or down.
This is frustrating until you take it easy. I think I’m not far from my actual pvp level not beeing carried by my class, so I started to concentrate on my gameplay more. I just realised that I would play pvp even if there was no league system, because I have always liked pvp. Pips are a double edge sword once you start to care about it. Your actual real reward is playing the game.

My gameplay changed a lot through seasons, I got bad habits in lower divisions( full caps instead of decap and support ), so I changed that. I also look at the enemy comp, d/p against a 3DH team is awful, but a p/p build is gorgeous. I was running basilic venom then changed it to impact strike because this meta heavily favors rez, and a quick disabling stomp is a huge advantage.

All this thief rambling to tell you that you have to be flexible and don’t really care about win/loss. your gameplay will improve and your enjoyment as well.

As for what to say at the beginning. I usually say “hi”, then where I go which is usually close. Sometimes I ask about weapons and armor appearence because I don’t know them ( sometimes it breaks the ice of people then you can talk strategy ). I look at the enemy comp before the match begin. i don’t know if people do that often but it allows me to tell " hey they have 3 DH and two Ele, I’m a squishy thief we will be at disadvantage for the first mid fight, what do we do ?". Just making people aware of the comp make them change class or engage the discussion.

hope it helps

oh, and one thing: I hate people that stop playing because there is one DC/AFk or say to the enemy team " please win fast" and then stay at spawn…Those people are the worst. The just are losing sight of the game to focus on pips and that is really sad

Yeah except you completely farm enemy team and next round you end up on that very team you just completely destroyed. Where does it fit in if not artificially forced 50% win rate?

Or my favorite: in higher divisions you have few good players and couple potatoes. The potatoes keep getting tossed around and whoever gets them, loses, no matter how good they are (i mean if pro players are not good enough then who is?)

It’s not.

@OP
Try grabbing a duo player and see how you fair.
Completely reverse your in game strategy and make a challenge for yourself.
Try to not die a single game. If you’re close to dying (less than 30% or 40% health) retreat to your nearest taken point and/or base.

If I feel “stuck” I definitely grab a duo or trio player for a couple games then I revert back to soloing. Keep having the same players on your team? Wait a few minutes before queing.

This current season is 50/50 matchmaking. If you were winning at a steady rate and your MMR has been increasing, you may be at a point where the matchmaking system is placing you as one of the top players on your team – as opposed to where you may have been one of the lower ranked members of the team in the past.

Trolling is a willful act so I’m curious how you divine others intentions (unless they explicitly state that’s what they’re doing). Winning is profit, but why you’d fault people for wanting to win is beyond reason.

So I’m not seeing any genuine exploitation in your argument.

I don’t fault people for wanting to win. I do fault wanting an unfair match and enjoying stomping over people without much risk to oneself.

I find that cowardly. Besides, it’s a fast way to drive people out of PvP .
