Q:
Seeking suggestions for PvP tank role
There is a concept of a tank in gw2. But there are no healers so you have to survive by yourself.
To find a tank role, you have to look for builds that are called bunkers. Their job is to survive as long as possible and/or support nearby allies.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
In GW2 your abilities depend on your traits, skills, and weapon/armor stats that you select, so no class is locked into the role of tank, healer, etc. You get a few racial skills exclusive to your character’s race, but I rarely notice people use them.
I’ve been playing a bunker necromancer for a little while and it’s been pretty fun, but guardians are currently the meta bunker build (see metabattle). I think some elementalist builds can get pretty tanky too. As far as ranged damage goes, I think elementalists and mesmers have it the best right now.
And as for HoT – you won’t be able to access HoT content (which includes the Revenant and all elite specializations) until it drops next month. The beta slots allow you to test out the Revenant/elites/new maps, but only during the Beta Weekend Events, and I don’t think the next BWE has been announced yet. There’s a FAQ somewhere that tells you about them in more detail.
Thanks both of you for the valuable suggestions. I will probably roll out an Ele plus a Guardian to see how things goes.

We know that Ele is having its sustain nerfed in the near future most likely, so I wouldn’t avoid it.
Anyway to me a tank in pvp is usually thought of as a bruiser, being able to deal good damage and tank it very well, which is really good in conquest because being able to hold a node is strong. The other form of tank is pure support, ie. no damage but high sustain and support, such as a support guardian or a settler shoutbow warrior.
For a bruiser tank build, I’d recommend soldier’s engineer, or a tanky power necro build (you can run anything from soldiers, to celestial, to knights/crusaders really). Ele is probably the most overpowered bruiser, but I don’t recommend playing it just because it might become totally unplayable a few months from now.
You can make a viable bruiser build out of nearly any class, save for mesmer/thief, but only because their mechanics favor bursty roaming dps and their defensive abilities don’t let them hold a node (stealth in particular).
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
The role of tank in PvP has different roles to fullfill:
- Surviving on point to hold the node
- Teamsupport with healing and boons
- Rezzing (with rez-traits, quickness or secondary rezzes like the Battle Standard of the Warrior)
- high self-heal and/or other means of sustain in fights.
The downside is, that those classes don’t have very high DMG.
Most common Bunkers (Tanks), are Shoutwarrior and Shoutguard, both are found here (http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki) under “ranked pvp”.
Thanks for the suggestions. Is the Revenant class also going to be a Tank as such?

I’ve played (during the beta-weekends) and theorycrafted tons of builds on rev and there might be a tanky support build, but it’s too soon to say.
Also, the more offensive builds look better atm.
Thanks. So it seems that if I wish to play a tank role for PvP or WvW then rolling a Guardian still remains a viable choice without worrying much about Revenant etc?
Play a rezmancer, always fun!
….. And Elementalist.
