I was thinking about Custom Arenas recently and an idea popped in my head; could we be allowed to set the boundaries of a map? For instance, could we be allowed to say only the middle of Legacy of the Foefire is a combat zone and everyone gets spawned around that area?

I believe having the ability to set boundaries around an area allows for less “running away to heal up” scenarios in the inevitable deathmatch arenas we’re going to get from customs.

Would be cool if we could toggle the side points off. Since we prolly can set a max number of players to like 6 and do 3×3 or so, which i think could really help get people back to the game.

The idea is with custom + observer the players can generate content, that way Anet can focus on balancing, making big monthly tournaments, and so on.

I would heavily empower any Idea in Custom Maps that lets us redesign the Map in any way. IMHO, one of the best ways for GW2 to get back onto the Map of competetive Players and let’s the Community contribute to the Success of GW2, would be a good Mapmaker.

This is obviously a very hard thing to make for ANet, but the closer we get to that with the Custom Arenas, the better it could be for GW2.

There are multiple ways to implement a “Mapmaker-light” with the Custom Arenas. These redesigns could all be based off pre-existing Maps:

- Being able to restrict a Map to a certain Area
- Being able to set distructable and indestructable Walls
- Being able to turn off certain Nodes
- Being able to add additional Nodes
- Being able to make certain Nodes bigger/smaller

I think this could be a very good Idea, but I really don’t know how hard it is to implement sth. like that.

A workaround for turning off points/making a (5v5 for example) deathmatch may be setting the min amount of players to 11, and making a password for the server so only 10 people can get in.

I think we’d make new maps before we would do something like that honestly.

In some other thread it was said what would be “customized” in these arenas, and it sounded very good… although would it be possible to be able to “deactivate” an objective so that you’re able to create a sort of death-match “game-mode” our selfs? In which the only way to gain points is through killing your enemy (and those gained points could also be adjusted as well).

Just imagine how many doors this would open.. Websites such as ESL could build their own custom arenas with their own set of rules and leaderboards where teams could compete against each other. And it would also completely change the meta as in full bunkers/burst would not be the best choice over balanced team oriented setup since having a bunker sitting in a point and having an Elementalist rtl to far point would not be as necessary anymore. I believe this would be food enough to give you guys enough time to bring in the other features that this game needs.

I think making custom Arenas as customizable as possible would be the best thing for the community and the devs. By putting the creativity in our hands we could make the fun things we want while Anet focusses on whatever it is they think is important.

Hey Evan, some random thoughts:

  • maybe it would be possible to implement the same system personal story has. The one that doesn’t let you leave a certain zone to make a deathmatch fun mode based on some nodes that are already ingame.
  • To randomize maps maybe you could use the same pattern Fractals of the mists follows?
  • leaderbords?

Death match would be fun, and ahh… Dueling. But It would also be interesting to see a Survival mode (where everyone is aloud 1 life per game.) This would be even more fun with smaller teams in smaller maps.

The problem is that player customization at the level you’re describing isn’t possible with how our content pipeline is set up. It’s much less work to just make a polished map built specifically for something like death match even if we don’t support the game mode officially.

The solution to this request is actually relatively simple and could easily be implemented even in current tpvp matches that are occurring today. Gleaning the tools used to create leaderboards… simply make invisible boundaries in the map that you are playing. Whether or not anyone abides to the boundaries is another story…and I currently suspect there would be very low participation to stay within the boundaries…because they are invisible.

But something as: Holding objectives grants no points or you simple cannot hold an objective. Something like this is possible yes?

Thanks for the reply. Luv ya long tiem

Hopefully more people will be interested in spvp again since we’ll be able to get somewhat rid of the conquest game mode that plagued gw2 so far. Even though it is a very good game mode.. it just shouldn’t be the only option in my opinion. This will automatically shift the meta for more group support and team fights for those kind of arenas hopefully.

Cheers!

Have you talked about giving the ability to change map-specific values? I.E. points for orb capture, guild lord hp/dmg/health, etc?

You’d be able to make some interesting game types with customization like that!

I still don’t understand why we’ve been boxed into conquest, but more on topic…

…didn’t someone say we’re gonna be able to set participants in customs to as low as 2v2? If that is the case, how will teams of 2 people fighting over 3 points play out?

I honestly feel like 5v5 is way too chaotic, given focus fire, stunlocking, and the short TTK. 2v2 and 3v3 TDM would facilitate solos, duos, and pugs much better than 5v5 conquest because everyone will already be on the same page: kill the enemy and keep your teammates alive. You don’t need voip for that, and no one will need to waste time typing to figure out who’s gonna go kill the npc, pick up the buff, run the treb, ect…

I’d like to see the options of custom arenas take pvp away from the theme park of conquest and into the sandbox of multiflavored deathmatch, arenas, and gvg

It’s really not a “custom” arena given the parameters you guys already presented. I’m sorry to say that, but I wouldn’t pay for something that’s basically the same.

I can password it…wohooo
I can set the score….wohooo

Oh yeah, why I am not able to customize the damage of mug in my own arena right? Why am I not able to customize the range of rtl for elementalists in my custom arena.. Its totally not a “custom” arena without those possibilities…

Currently, that version of a “custom” arena, where I cannot change the game experience is not something I would pay for. It has nothing to do with changing abilities Bob. It has to do with fundamentally changing the way the map plays. Changing the score doesn’t do that. Changing who can enter doesn’t do that…etc

I have a question I’m not sure has been answered before.

Aren’t Custom Arenas negatively going to affect the queues for hot-join and tPvP, by spreading the players thin?

Ya, I believe the idea is to have custom arenas for casual hotjoin and training, while tpvp will remain as the competitive/ ranked mode. But I’m not very sure of that.

Also, another suggestion for CA: option to disable respawning, for a last team standing wins deathmatch.

Okay, so Custom Arenas will probably show up in the hot-join server browser? That’s good then, I was afraid of another interface that would have people split and therefore negatively affect tPvP queues. Although it’s still possible that tPvP players will prefer Custom Arenas over tPvP, regardless of tPvP rewards.

There aren’t enough options to justify paying for custom arenas. The only ones who will do it will be competitive teams or guilds who want to scrimmage each other. That being said, there aren’t enough competitive teams to make it worthwhile for those remaining to rent them.
