Should I play hotjoin or solo ranked?

let me be honest with you , if you go unranked , be prepared for the flames that willl come if you do something wrong and even more if you do not play meta builds..
so my suggestion is , get the meta build for your proffesion and go unranked, dont be surprised if you fail hard at the start , because 40 games is nothing , there are players with 14k games, tbh i have no idea if the game takes the number of games into account , i dont have the feeling it does
ps: switch your status to offline , so no one can flame you via whisper and ignore chat if the flame the chat

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
It’s funny though, most games I’ve played are as quiet as a tomb chat-wise.
And the only time I’ve been outright insulted thus far was from a Guardian on the other team. He was mad that he couldn’t kill me and that I couldn’t kill him. Meanwhile I was having a blast trying to outmaneuver him. Never did but it was fun trying.

Those are certainly buttons that my keyboard and mouse have, yes. Any suggestions for connecting them to skills?
My current setup is default keybindings except for E being my “interact” key, F is “stow weapon” and I have my two extra mouse buttons set to my heal and my elite.
Both ranked and unranked attempt to match you based partly on your skill with that profession, so either should be fine. As far as builds go, I prefer to make my own because that’s what I enjoy and I do pretty well with them. (Nearly) Every build has a weakness, so after a while it doesn’t really matter what you run, its about your experience with using and knowing its limitations.
As far as hotkeys go, I’ve tried using different combinations and the standard WASD, but I still prefer the arrow keys and the number pad for movement and skills. However, if you want to try to reduce your needed reach you could try assigning skills 6-10 to the shift key. So [Shift] + 1 would map to skill 6, etc. I didn’t like it, but maybe you will.
Goodluck.

Well, it really depend on your preferences. All of those mentioned are easy accessable while walking with W[S]AD.
For example, if you play Engi you may want to have both Kits on your mouse, because you will switch between them pretty often. Just because of that I’ve my heal, utilities and elite split between mouse and Q, E, R.
I would try unranked at least once you get the hang of it go ranked. Because ranked is a lot ‘better’ as in at least you know everyone is trying to win rather than just fooling around or trolling or random afking .
And on Ranked / Unranked.
Unranked is good place to learn your build (pick meta build → http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki <- / ranked arena), once you will feel confident with your Profession (build in this case) and you will know your role in team and how to rotate you should give Ranked chance, since Ranked matches are much more enjoyable (well for me). Also before you step to Ranked, you should know basic of each Ranked Map (example: learn timer and important of buffs → http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Temple_of_the_Silent_Storm)
Ranked, it has better track reward than unranked, in fact there is no point in playing unranked. The only exeption would be if the game this or any other, had an important and significant ranked scene such as lol, and you already had a higher rank and wanted to fool around. This game has no important or significant ranked scene and you have no ranking thus no point.

even more if you do not play meta builds.
Really?
90% of players in unranked don’t have meta builds. It’s full of shield\gs wars, condi mesmers and power necros. I won’t even mention team comps, cause they’re so far from meta it’s not even funny.
I’ve never seen anyone talking about meta builds there.
While the suggestion to use meta build is a good one, the part about community in unranked is just a lie.
Thanks for the advice guys. There looks to be a couple meta builds that are close to how I was playing so I’ll probably try those out first. I was worried I was WAY out of the norm.
And it sounds like I should move over to ranked once I’m comfortable with a build in hotjoin. Cool.
Feel free to debate/discuss more if you like. I’ll be trying things this weekend.
Ranked, it has better track reward than unranked,….
Not true. They both have the same rewards.
And people will yell a LOT more at you if you suck in ranked. Unranked it the best way to get the hang on 5v5 and not x+1 vs x like in hotjoin. If you feel confrident with your build and rotations, change to ranked.
Trouble is, I’m not the best at the fighting and/or disengaging part somehow. I’ve tried a few builds (not meta most times) on my characters but I can’t seem to hold my own on more than a 1v1. (And even then, some classes give me more trouble than others. Not hating though; good show, thieves)
90% or more cant 2 vs 1 anything. Maybe hold a point a little while with point holding build until help gets there. And thieves, well its a class designed to make teamfighs uneven with mobilty or pressure ppl 1 vs 1. Most ppl cant handle a decent thief without proper counter spec 1 vs 1.
I suggest you go check up the metabuilds, use them, go unranked and if you know how to teamplay and your doesnt suck big time you’ll be fine. Later on when you get more exp you can start experimenting more at least in unranked. The rewards and achi`s are same in unranked and ranked only unranked wont affect leaderboard status.
If someone starts flaming you or gets personal for whatever turn off chat-channels. I only keep teamchat on at start and use it for what its purpose is. If someone starts abusing it i just disable it.
Its not intented for flaming and kittenting on ppl but communicating in way that helps the team.
