Hi, I’ve been playing GW2 pvp for the passed few months after switching over from pushing wow 3’s for a few years. In WoW it was generally better to just get really good at one class or maybe 2 but I feel like it could be different in gw2. Is it better to just have a class or 2 to push or is it better to play several? thanks for the help.

For solo queue Spvp these days it’s probably best to know two classes. One for damage and one for bunkering. If you generally play with friends (not solo queue) then one is better.

As someone that exclusively plays one class, for sure learn more than one. The meta is consistently and you don’t want to pigeon hold yourself into a class that gets pushed out.

You’re much more versatile knowing multiple classes. There have been numerous times when I’ve switched classes before a game begins, so that my team’s comp is better. You want to have a balanced team, so if 3 (or sometimes even 4) of the other players are all playing the same class as you, or the other team has a couple of classes that are going to counter you, switching class would benefit your team.

Not only that, but also understanding how the other classes function from first hand experience can help you better in fighting them.

With how meta currently works:

  • You learn to play your favored class
  • And then you learn to play a tempest and swap to it when there is no tempest

Real easy

Even if you prefer one class, it’s best to play multiple classes. Helps if your team is not balanced and you can switch, but mostly, it just helps you learn that class so you know how to defend against them.

With META changes (nerfed patches), you should know more than 1 class.

I would work on META dps roamer, META support and META conditions builds… so you know what they are about and understand how to counter them better.

After that, if your team need a dps roamer, you could “specialized” that… if they need support… and so on.

Playing all classes to some extent is definitely good practice for learning how to handle fights in PvP.

However, as said by others, if you solo queue, then you’ll definitely want to learn how to play a second class as a swap if you just happen to get queued with a team that has a bad composition. Ele is definitely the safest swap to learn as a backup.

Generally you’ll want your team to have:
1 primary mid fight bunker – ideally this will be an ele, but could also be a druid.
1 mobile roamer – Revenant, thief, or mesmer fill this role.
3 DPS/Team fighters

Depending on the other team, you can get by without a mobile roamer or you may even want to have some classes that excel at fighting side nodes (warriors, druids, mesmers, etc.).

Because of this, the need for having a swap will depend on what class you play as your main.
If you play a thief, for example, it’s very, very important to have a swap since 2 thieves is a major handicap (not impossible odds, but improbable). However, if you play an ele or druid, you may rarely need to swap.

Engi, necro, and warrior are also currently relatively safe professions to play without a swap available since they work well regardless of how much class stacking you have in on your team. Engi is probably the safest of those three.

And of course, all the advice from me and everyone else could easily be thrown out the window, depending on the next balance patch.

1. good to “know” as many classes as you can.
2. learn to “play” a few classes
3. be good on your fav class.

I used to be exclusively warrior for pvp with some guardian thrown in (before HOT). The poor state of warrior in season 1 and 2 made me branch out and learn Rev and Scrapper. So now i can play 4 classes reasonably well.

Your typical average gamer -
“Buff my main class, nerf everything else. "

At this point in the games life your better of learning multiple professions. Near launch you could stick with one, since everyone was learning at that time it was easier to learn about other professions by combat.

I have 1 of each at 80 and swap around whenever I get bored of the current main. For example lately I’m queuing staff daredevil… Mmm… Vault….

I think if you completely master one class, you will always be a positive to your team(regardless of Meta). If you’re an average joe at all classes you’re not so much help.

Just my opinion though

In my opinion, regardless of the corresponding meta, any answer to your question would depend on the type of player you are (e.g.: fast/slow learner) and of course the amount of time you generally spend (along with whether you will spam solo or already have a set group of people you roll with).

For instance:
-fast learner and hardcore/active PvPer? Learn 3-4 classes and go wreck stuff (including a bunker somewhere there and not all condi or power, have variety).
-slow learner and active? Pick 1 or 2 to start with and work your way up. Learn/master 1-2, join ranked with them and when you feel like it, practise the next classes you want to play in unranked.
-Inactive/not too active PvPer? Pick 1 or 2 max, learn them decently and have fun whenever you plan on playing.

If you have a group of friends you play often with, I’d just take a mix between what I like to play and what the group regularly needs.
For yoloq I’d suggest 2, max 3. Unless you’re ROM; if you are ROM play all classes and wreck everybody.

What I have done for years on both WoW and GW2 while is pick 2 and spam these 2. The fact that these 2 professions had similar PvP-style-of-combat helped a lot too.

The game is easy enough to pick up and without the level grind you can play as many professions as you want and get good at them. There is no reason to limit yourself to one or two when all are easily accessible.

Just don’t be like me & get good at only 2 classes that are situational like thief & ranger… I can fix very few team comps by switching from one to other… I’ll like be forced into learning ele or rev to remain competitive as a solo queue pvp player…

You should learn to play them all.

If not for versatility alone…. simply knowing what each class brings to the table in pvp helps out quite a bit.

If you don’t know what your opponent is capable of, you put yourself at a serious disadvantage.

I’d try everything, don’t get too attached, there’s a new update on the 26th.

Look some builds up, see which one you enjoy playing, metabattle is a good site to use.

Then decide what you want to do as far as a team goes. Generally it’s easier to carry when you’re playing something with sustain, you end up staying on a point longer. When you go DPS orientated you’re just looking for fights to win. Being that extra guy that comes in and changes the fight in your favor, whether it’s 3v2, 2v1. Although remember that if it’s 2v1, the fight has to end in less than 20-30s.
