Q:
Slow SPVP Ranking, Any Tips?
A:
How would I acquire boosts?
Is there a link to the rewards for winning free tourneys?

That’s all the stuff you will see in chests and you can click on some of the rooted text to investigate further. If you want pictures, just google “guild wars 2 ______ imgur” where _ is a weapon or armor piece you want to see all the models for.
Use boosts and play tournies
Mesmer / Thief / Necromancer

cap points and try to get some kills.
Chests from winning tourney’s / spending glory. But I agree, I have been playing a decent amount and am still only rank 18. Wouldn’t mind seeing things move along a bit faster in the PvP rank scene.
Thanks a lot fellas, this answers a lot of mine, and hopefully other’s, questions.
Glory boost dont apply to actual glory leveling, it just give you additional glory outside of that.
Fastest way is to win tourneys, if you do not want to try that yet then just follow the zerg in sPvP matches. Make sure to always get the free 20 points you get from neutralizing and capturing a point. Don’t bother defending, the enemy zerg will make quick work of you even if it is only 2 people. Always do damage to any moving enemy, even if you can’t get the kill. Also stomping gets you more points than killing them when they are down. Always kitten the treb on Kyhlo, if no one comes to stop you, it is easy as hell to make it rain and rack up points. Never focus on winning, win bonus is often not worth it. If you are good enough, getting the top kills / revives / captures / neutralizes / boss kills can give nice points.

MindlessRuff, your post makes me very sad. The reason is because it’s 100% accurate. The game (SPVP) rewards people for playing the way my 10 year old nephew always plays…
If I’m not mistaken, I sensed some disdain in your post because you don’t like it either?

sPvP is designed for glory farming, tPvP is designed for trying to win. If it was meant to be any other way they would have designed it differently

I totally agree that this is the way they designed it, doesn’t mean I agree with their design(and in turn doesn’t mean that you agree with my disagreeing with it).
I think the goal of any game should be to win. Even Anet’s own philosophy has always been to remove the need for farming; however, SPvP is exactly what they stated they would try to prevent. It’s mindless farming for the sake of gaining points and not for the sake of fun or winning.
Just my 2c and I’m sure many will disagree with me (albeit a minority imo)

It’s the same as Lol’s setup
sPvP/Customs are for trying builds and facerolling newbs
Free tPvP/Normals are for practicing comps and your prof in more controlled environment
Paid tPvP/Ranked is for srs business
Glory points and rank don’t matter. People only complain because the other way of measuring how good people are (leaderboards) aren’t implemented yet and getting glory takes a while, especially 39+
Mesmer / Thief / Necromancer
To tell the truth, even if I do reach the top of a leader board in an 8v8 hotjoin sPvP match, it does not satisfy me at all. I always feel much more accomplished whenever I do my job well of roaming or point defending whenever I play in a tPvP match with a PuG or with friends. The sad part is if you try the latter in a sPvP game, you will be zerged, killed, and get mediocre points for trying to win the game for your team.
You haven’t played a “ton” of spvp of you are only rank 7, haha. The best way to rank up quickly is just to ignore the rank and play to have fun, before you know it you’ll be rank 30.
My advice would be to just stop caring about what your rank is. Play the game, have fun.

You are thinking of rank points.
Glory Boosters do work for increasing your glory rank faster.
However it doesnt increase rank points which are used in the achievement tab and you get your title from. When i hit rank 34, it will take me another 10k rank points to get the achievement for 4th rank in Ransacker. This is because of Glory Boosters.
This means that if you finish a tier, you will need to farm another amount of rank points for the title. Works as motivation against the horrible feeling of ‘god, another 10 ranks with 2x glory required..’. I use glory boosters only when under 50% of my rank, again because its emotionally easier on you to grind that last half instead of the first.
Pick a class with good base defenses (mesmer, thief) or gear for at least some defense. It’s much better glory to survive and tag many people in a fight, than to suicide everytime you kill somebody.
If you see somebody downed, run over and spam dmg into him to get the credit. If somebody is down right outside a circle, run into it first so you get 15 points for the kill instead of 5. Just kill him from range. Always try to res people, another 10 points. (Near) perma Swiftness is also pretty cool as you can sometimes get to a point in time to get the assault bonus.

If you are good enough, getting the top kills / revives / captures / neutralizes / boss kills can give nice points.
Came here to say this. Figure out what you’re good at, then go for it.
As an example, if you understand where the enemy zerg is likely to go next, go somewhere else and neutralize their point. You’ll need a speed build for that. So, thief or air elementalist.
If you’re tanky but slow, follow your own zerg to at least get the capture. Then maybe camp the enemy spawn spot to kill the obviously weaker players. They hate that btw.
My advice would be to just stop caring about what your rank is. Play the game, have fun.
Fun is always there, for better or worse. I’ve just been noticing it takes like 20 rounds just to get 1 rank ><
Glory Boosters would be nice to find. I keep on uncovering rabbit finishers ><

You can make them with 10 dust, 1 orb, 1 crystal and a consumable token.
It just takes a bit of time and glory to get enough crystals to craft a meaningful amount.
Just curious, why are you in a hurry? its going to take very long for anyone to get to 80
and when people do it will be a real in game accomplishment, now if gear ir your reasoning, after rank 10 you can get some of the cooler stuff like armaggedon / pit fighters and vigil weapons
as far as how to do it faster? honestly and this may seem like troll advice, but roll either a warrior, thief, mesmer for hotjoin and roam as much as possible getting every spot you can cap as well as tagging every single downed player before they get downed, worse case you will get 5 points, best you get 15, even if you dont help down someone go and tag em, if you are trying to glory/rank farm that is the only advice i can give you and it is why i say use war/thief they roam like champs.
Hot join below rank 20 usually throws me in fights with 1 vs 2, or 2 vs 3… sometimes we exceed the total number of 5 or 6 both sides counted.
I usually play spvp from 22h in the evenings, sometimes a little earlier.
My fear is that there just aren’t that much new players in pvp anymore.
a 1 vs 2 fight or so can give you a few captures, but if those other 2 are a thief and a mesmer, you’re done for…
And yes: mesmers and thiefs are mathematically your highest chance of facing.
Just go down the line of professions people complain about: thiefs, mesmers, warriors,… those are the ones you face most.
Hot Join has become an empty joke for lower ranks I’m afraid.
While handpicking servers throws you in the designed mess of 8v8…
I’m sure (or at least I hope) it’s better at 20h in the evening, and other ‘peak moments’. But when I play hot join is weird at best, a sick joke at worst.
