So is every tournament ...
if you are playtesting you should go 5v5 hotjoint. they exist, they are only down scrolling in the list.
You’re basically right.. most groups in tpvp are not pugs, round 1 or 2 may be pug v pug but round 3 rarely is.
If you want to succeed in tpvp you’re going to need the very basics of Skype 5 Different Classes and an opening strat.
Very interested in what you are talking about Skukran but I’ve never seen one on the list. Are you talking structured PVP or tournaments?
Every tournament is the same setup. 2 elementalists, 2 guardians, 1 necro/mesmer/thief.
I’m done with this crap. Elementalists, and to a lesser extent guardians, need to be nerfed big time. The state of these two professions is absolutely ridiculous.
browser pvp have 5v5 hotjoin. if you need to test stuff with random or just play with pugs, you should go there. finding premade in tourney, even if free, is just the “normality”
You probably know this, but may I present: tips for players of games with no matchmaking!
—Weekends: guilds are on in force and casual players are joining solo. If you solo-join a tournament on Saturday night, your chances of a fair fight are low.
—Weekdays/mornings: a few guilds are on, and a lot of partial guilds are on. Your chances of a fair fight are slightly higher.
—Weeknights: best chances of success. Short queue times mean fewer people leave before the match starts so you have a low probability of having to play 4v5. There are some guilds on, but also a lot of partial guild groups that you can tag along with.
Or, to save time, you could just tell your friends not to bother yet—matchmaking is high on the priority list (so we hear) so with luck things will improve. Right now, tournament matches that are closer than 500-300 are rare, unfortunately.
5v5 hotjoin is also a decent option, but there are usually only a few games going of that type and hotjoin is plagued by uneven numbers on teams and people coming/leaving too quickly for it to feel like a real match.
One maxed out guild group in vent fighting 7 groups of randoms who have no purpose to be there other then getting steam rolled, or have I just had bad luck with my first few matches?
I’m kinda “play testing” this for some friends for another game, and based on my limited experience so far this is my reason to tell them not to bother. Any one who’s been here longer have any insight?
Yes. A major problem is a lack of voice chat in this game. Pick-up teams have no way of communicating.

That’s why nobody plays tournaments anymore.
Hot-join is designed for glory farming. Tournaments should support both organized and pick-up play (via built-in voice chat). You’re never going to have enough organized teams for a thriving PvP population.

False, Tournament ques have never been faster.

Despite the naysayers, I think PvP population has actually managed to increase a bit recently even with all the problems. Tourney queues are pretty quick and I think hotjoin population may be rising a bit as well. Of course, we’re talking anecdotal evidence—I’d be interested to see some numbers from Anet on how things are doing PvP-wise.

Did you guys play in the betas/first month? Tournament queues were like 1-2 minutes back then.
Hot-join barely has 10 filled servers these days. Back in the day half the server list would be full.

The problem with nerfing Guardians is there would be no reason in playing them in competitive PvP. Kind of like Engineers/Rangers. But hey, nerfing the hell out of bunker builds would maybe mean we’d get buffed in some other way (however that hasn’t happened in the past).

Try playing as Asian / Oceanic. You can’t get a free tournament to pop after 11 pm, yes, I said FREE.

It’s no better in North America.

@Shrewd
The thief is the only profession in this game that requires skill. This is largely due to initiative.

NA here, havent had a queue time longer than 5 min east coast hours 4pm-11pm weekends and some weekdays.
Without matchmaking, its a gamble
So, i’ve waited over an hour for a tournament to start in EU. We were 3 and a half upon 5( one was afk in base and i didn’t see what was the last doing). Opponents were all above r45 and having 2 eles and guardian, so i believe it was a premade.
Obviously i’m not going to blame players for wanting to play together ( although it could be more risky builds than 3 bunkers always), but something needs to be done yes…
Most people are just bored at the moment mate. It’s got varied factors for each individual, but most pvp players in my friends list just get thier fix in WvW now and have moved on from sPvP.
Call it balance, game mode, lack of solo/duo que, tournament set up etc. I would love it if I could just sign up to a tourney from the UI instead of having to go to the mists. With the wait times, I get so bored waitin for a tourney to pop.
no need matchmaking
paid and free tournaments will spererate them

You’ll all soon see just how pointless matchmaking will be.

Well, with current number of active players, yeah, matchmaking won’t do much, but hopefully, along with ladders and a bit of redesigning, it will bring back enough players to make difference.
