So what is the state of sPvP?
-Bad Meta/Questionable Balance
-Poor Rewards
-Bad Matchmaking
-Meanigless Leaderboards
I’d say that sums it up.
The Meta has a chance to changed by the players because of Warriors being so strong against condition users, but for some reason the same people claiming to hate the Meta are resiting to change until ANet releases a balance patch.
The disconnect is almost comical, we see people going “omg meta soz bad” and now that Warrior is strong those same people “omg war op nerf everything on dem naow.”
I’d like to see teams run dual Warriors because I bet it could easily squish condition heavy teams. For some reason few seem interested in counter play. I feel like the balance team said “Hey, we know you hate conditions, so have this Warrior who we just gave the tools to crush the Meta.” Of course now Warrior has become the new Spirit Ranger in terms of witch hunts while being nowhere near as powerful.

I pvp’ed for around a month back during the game’s release and then quit.
There were a few really overpowered builds, such as the shortbow and sword/horn ranger and your typical mesmer. Farmed up champion hunter and illusionist and then quit due to boredom.
There was also the ridiculously overpowered (but counter-able) heartseeker thief.
What is sPvP like now? More balanced? Are ranger and mesmer still overpowered?
No. Balance is really pretty decent right now, except that necros and warriors got buffed a bit too much at once due to very vocal community lobbying. Most current balance problems are things that players specifically asked for. The next patch is supposed to focus on slight buffs to underused skills and “shaving” of overused specs, so assuming nothing ridiculous happens, we could see the best balance of the game to date in the next few weeks.
Heartseeker/backstab were not allowed to remain the noob crushers that they were last september, and although thieves still make inexperienced players ragequit in WvW, no one would call main hand dagger OP in PvP. S/D got a very strong buff and is now excellent.
Formats for free and paid tournaments were entirely redone; solo queues and team queues are now split and ranked matches last only one round instead of three. They’ve also introduced matchmaking and a leaderboard.
There have been several new maps but most of them have not been suitable for competitive matches. For some reason, they’re still in the solo queue rotation, which kind of confuses me…but it’s not a huge problem. They aren’t used in premade vs. premade matches.
