So where do I start?
Hotjoin is your best bet if you’re starting off. I’d recommend jumping into 5v5 rooms rather than 8v8 as this will ease your transition into Solo/Team Queues later on. Once you’ve learned the map layouts and objectives you’ll be ready to graduate into Solo Queue.
As a note, many of the rune and gear options you were accustomed to in WvW will not be available. I’d recommend taking a peek at this thread to find something suitable. I’m sure your WvW build will work well enough, but that link should help you find the runes and sigils that will work best.
If you have any specific questions, ask away!
Wow. Fast response!
Thanks so much, I’ll check that stuff out

Choose a build, any build. Research how to play it and play.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
This will help a bunch:

Watch here, listen to the expert streamers, and learn their tactics. You can also ask them questions and they are pretty good at responding after a match.
Wow fantastic guys! Thank you.
Was browsing the builds and didn’t see anything close to mine (I’m terrible, I covet it like Gollum and his ring) … Will be interesting to see how it translates.

Make sure to check the replies to the thread I linked in my original response. I know Supcutie has an updated variation of his build listed in a reply.
Ok let me ask some really basic questions:
What’s the average vitality/hp per player? Since gear is “neutral” except for amulet and runes/sigils … are all roughly the same HP?
No food in spvp right? But are there consumables I should be aware of otherwise?
I will do the tutorial, but is spvp similar to the ruins in the home borderland in WvW? You have to stand to cap to win? How many points are there? (Again, apologies, I haven’t set foot inside and likely will discover the answers to this one soon, but didn’t want to zone in and run around like a chicken with my head cut off, would actually like to be an asset to my team).
Gear in spvp is purely decoration correct?
Do rank titles show to opposing forces? Just wondering in case I’m puzzled by why I’m suddenly swarmed with my level 1 rank pvp
@Average HP – Stats on amulets are heavily weighted to make up for the lack of gear-stats and jewelery. This will vary based on spec and profession. You’ll generally see builds that range from 14k-22khp.
@Cosumables – The only consumables usable in PvP are limited-use finishers and glory boosters.
@Objectives – The points themselves work just like the ruins. Each map has three points. Each point gives 1 point every 2 seconds. Here’s a link to the wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Conquest
@Gear – All gear in PvP is cosmetic! You will have the same stats as someone who has been PvP’ing since launch.
For super basic information, the sPvP wiki might be a good place to start: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Structured_PvP

Hahaha!
You’re lovely! Thank you
if you’re really just looking for 1v1’s to get better for wvw, then just play 5v5 hotjoins. Don’t play 8v8! just don’t. Also, there are some duel servers and there are some good players there, but you won’t play as often. Also, read rules of duel servers before playing because some skills are banned, and alot of mesmer stuff is usually banned banned(like prismatic understanding builds or moa). Also, you won’t win 1v2s 1v3s like you do in wvw. 1v3s are pretty much impossible and 1v2s only if you play your best game and your opponents are terrible.
Idk if you want tips on the mesmer class or not, but I’ll say that i also play mesmer and i find that the best weapon set and build for this meta is greatsword/staff shatter mesmer. It gives you the best balance between defence/offence and z axis mobility with phase retreat.
PS: About phase retreat, there are some places in pvp maps where if you use phase retreat against a wall, you will teleport to the top of that wall (on SOME walls, not all of them), like the stairs that lead to the side points on spirit watch and the stairs that lead to the mid point on skybummer. If you want to know more, I’m sure guys like sensotix would be more than glad to tell you on all of the spots.
Banned? You mean player set rules or I zone in and they don’t function? Of course I’d adhere to the rules, just curious.
And yeah, I’m expecting to faceplant my fair share before I adapt. I just wanted to know some basics (thank you all!) so I was an asset to the team and not, say, running the wrong way

Grouch, threads like this really show there’s a huge lack of PvP “intro” for Gw2.
People enter and have no idea what to do, how the game works, how they can become better, if they’re doing things right or wrong and all the following.
Please consider giving new players a good way to learn how to PvP, because it causes massive frustration for both good PvPer when they meet total newbies in solo queue ( the first thing they see, ABOVE ALL) and for new players, due to being ganked by good players without even knowing what happened.
Really, consider this.
Oh it’s the same thing with WvW. But I’m usually in map to offer clinics to ease new folks in…
As josh says stay away from 8v8.You have better chances at finding duels or get less zerged in wvw.

yes player set rules. usually these servers are 1v1 servers king of the hill. winner stays on the map and plays against the next guy.
Ah cool! A bit like fight club on WvW borderland maps.
Hrm, I only use moa on perma stealth thieves. Is there a way of telling what class you’re fighting before you zone into those rooms?
Snip.
We absolutely agree with you, Mrbig. The transition into PvP for a completely new player can be fairly jarring until you get acclimated. Making PvP more welcoming is something we want to do.
For now, we’re going to be focusing our resources on reworking rewards and other infrastructure. After all, if we bring these new players in and there’s no reason for them to say – what was the point?
I’d love to see a thread on tutorial/new player ideas, if someone is up for it. We should keep that discussion separate from this thread.
@Cosumables – The only consumables usable in PvP are limited-use finishers and glory boosters.
While those are likely what you were asking about, please note that the Consumable Token can be used to make unidentified dyes in the Mystic Forge.
and the stupidest grown-ups who are the most grown-up.”

Well.
I finally dipped my toe in today.
It pretty much works, for me, just like fight club in WvW. The mechanics were instantly recognizable, the points were easy to understand, the fights were fast and fun. (No deaths so far, even with my wonky hybrid build!)
I may become hopelessly addicted.
Thanks again to everyone who was so kind and patient to take the time to respond to my newbie questions! See you in there.

I love this <3~
Though it’s satisfying to murder somone in wvw with consumable buffs >=) while not using any.
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”
Spoke too soon, a few faceplants, lol.. Need to figure out how to work vs the 5 team gank squad I’ll get there.
What I don’t get is people leaving the match half way through. Do they get penalized? Or are they bailing to prevent a permanent mark on their record?

If you’re talking about solo queue, they get penalized. If you’re talking about hotjoin, they just leave cause they mad bro.
I think I was in solo queue. No big. More for me to try to kill.
People leave hotjoin because their SoloQ match is ready. If you leave early you don’t get any of the match glory reward for hotjoin win or loss, as far as I know.

A year and a half later…and now this is the focus.
Awesome! Welcome to pvp. Add me to the friend list and I’ll try to answer any questions you might have in game.

Lyssa’s Grimoire – a guide every Mesmer should read.
I’m on Piken Would LOVE a duel! I try to get them when I can in WvW.
My faceplants Kirito came from not knowing the maps, not the mechanics. I have to say Skyhammer was not a favourite, lol.
Sadly I tried hot join today and it wasn’t my cup of tea, it felt a lot like WvW zerging, something I actively avoid for the most part in WvW. The solo arena I enjoyed a lot though, can see myself doing that more.
