“Don’t criticize what you can’t understand”
Ele
- Pros: potential immortality, high burst potential, high mobility, lots of CC, 3 stun breakers, strong downed state vs unorganized teams/pugs, low skill floor, very interactive -you always feel like you’re doing something.
- Cons: Low hp pool = susceptible to burst (but perma vigor + armor of earth kind of counters that), high skill cap.
Mesmer
- Pros: Global mobility, strong aoe burst, decent dmg metigation (2 invulns), aoe quickness, clones, strong aoe CC.
- Cons: Higher skill floor than other classes, limited options for build diversity, relatively squishy, no condi clear, you will usually be first one marked in team fights (so ppl can see that you are not a clone), can be hard to deal with aoe/stability, very cooldown dependent.
Necro
- Pros: instant cast fear, multiple options for build diversity, incredibly high health pool, on-demand dmg metigation (death shroud), decent gap closer, strong elites, hilarious condi clear (send condis on you to enemies), great damage, great survivability, very interactive -you always feel like you’re doing something.
- Cons: Bad mobility, very skill dependent, high skill cap, somewhat high skill floor (depends on build), condi build not quiet as strong as trap ranger (less raw condi dmg, a bit more support-ish with aoe condi clears and fear), harder to play than trap ranger.
Warrior
- Pros: You’ll feel like an underdog.
- Cons: gl finding viable pvp build post-quickness nerf. (someone probably will)
Guardian
- Pros: Immortal, OP dps build is OP (shhh -sub to tvesportsgaming on youtube and stay tuned), lowest skill floor in game, great peals, great support capability, best wep skills in game (all weps are viable), great condi clear, tons of blocks/invulns, perma vigor in many builds, you’re usually the last one to die in team fights, low individual skill cap.
- Cons: SLOW – will take you 5 hours to run from mid to home, low hp pool, low dps in bunker builds, can be boring bunkering a point that isn’t being contested, takes patience -if you blow all your defensive skills 10 seconds into the fight you’re screwed (if you freak out and button mash when attacked this isn’t the class for you, try ele).
These are the classes I’d personally recommend, you could also give ranger + engi a try -i just don’t have much experience with these classes post march patch so I didn’t post them (they are both solid options though).
In the end it’s entirely up to your playstyle, just play around with a few of the cookie cutter builds for each class until you find one that really clicks -something that makes you want to play this game for 32 hours straight and overdose on mt dew.
Classes I left out: Thief, I don’t think that this is a class that anyone should main (coming from someone who mained it for 5 months). In its current form you only rely need to press 3 buttons to be competent with the class. Furthermore every fight lasts less than 10 seconds, you 3 shot them or they 3 shot you -the class just lacks the depth to make fights feel dynamic.
TLDR: I would personally recommend Necro and Ele as these classes possess immense depth and make almost every fight feel extremely dynamic and strategically rewarding. Good luck!

What ?! Please teach me how to be Immortal. All weps are viable? Perma Vigor? Low skill cap? :S Five hours to get from point to point ? (W00T ?!)
I must have played Guardian wrong all this time, kitten :/
Guardian was already my main, by far my favorite. But I’ve been playing her since launch and don’t have any other level 80’s. I have a low level ele but I have yet to give necro a try. I loved necro is gw1. It was my main for a while until I started playing warrior dagger hammer knocklock
I hear a lot of people bash on necro’s but I know ele is powerful. In pvp on my guard whenever I fought one we just couldn’t kill each other, it always ended up being team fights a few moments later.
I want to know why people dislike necros so much compared to other casters.
I know a lot of people who would swap some of the mesmer and guardian points lol.

- Guardians don’t have access to swiftness or teleports.
- Guardians cannot be bursted due to their high health pool.
- Guardians have great condition cleaning on Symbol DPS.
- Guardians are targetted first in team fights but are too strong so die last.
- All weapons are viable on all types of builds.
Also
- Symbol DPS is secret and OP.
I DON’T THINK HE PLAYS GUARDIAN

I may have exaggerated a few points in that post for dramatic affect
Didn’t mean to bash guardian players or anything, competitive team play and casual play are very different aspects of game for every class. I just wanted to give the general idea of what someone would be getting into with the play styles of the varying classes at a casual level of play.

I don’t mean to sound rude, however I need you to explain some things to me as I do not play a Gaurdian. Why are there utility abilities that grant swiftness when you have said they do not exist. Why do teleports not exist, does the sword teleport and Judges/Merciful Intervention not count? How can Gaurdians possess a high health pool when they are in the lowest bracket for HP pools (last time I checked). Condition Clears for the class exist in more than symbol DPS builds, or are we talking about crazy amounts of condition cleansing. Why is the gaurdian targetted first when it is most likely to be the bunker? Your last point I have no insight into as I have said, I do not play Gaurdian at all. I have made sure and read over the post that you have quoted in order to make sure you were just pointing out things in the post that you found ridiculous, but none of them matched besides the 5th point. Thank you for the perspective you can give sir.

I was indeed being sarcastic, I hate when people try to make newer players perceive as class as something it is not.
It’s where all the whining about Mesmers and Thieves comes from, the misunderstanding of a classes abilities and limits.
I just wrote out in points what he was saying so people could see the rediculousness of it, if anybody were to believe any of the points were true it would be pretty sad.

Isn’t overpowered, nor is it secret. Or any other form of Symbol DPS.
Haha the PvP forums generally can have a lot sarcasm =). I remember when I felt like Sheldon (Big Bang Theory) and I trouble deciphering what was legit and what was sarcastic.
I just assume its all sarcastic.

I have had some good success with Defektive’s hammer build – basically pick a target, lock him down with hammer while your friends nuke him. I used to use Frenzy for a bit of extra damage but was using the might/fury shout last night to buff up the nearby bursters. I’m not playing at high levels but it was very effective.
