Some newbie advice
Osmoz,
Glad you have hung on this long. Unfortunately there is a massive learning curve for pvp that is not easily figured out. However there are a few sources.
Here is a guild for players interested in pvp teams and has a great group of players who are just there to help out: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/GW2Esports-LFG-Do-you-need-a-team/page/4#post2107299
You can also check out some of the pvp videos and guides at youtube.com/soacgaming we try to get some great instructional videos for players by other players. Find the profession you like. We also have a show called L2Play that is for newer and veteran players that goes on every week.
Yes, do the following, enter GW2, bring up hero panel, goto achievements, goto pvp conquerer, put your cursor over gladiator. It will tell you “Get your feet wet rookie”.
Means keep playing, some stuff is learned faster by just toughing it up and keep playing even though you get owned, because eventually you’ll learn what to do when where and why.
I could tell you to bunker a point, but you wont learn how to team fight, you wont learn the tips and tricks about the map, you wont learn enemy predictions. Just get out there and keep on keeping on.
Thanks guys, i’ve already replied to that post, i’m hoping it will help, still looking forward to that youtube channel, once i got the time, i’ll give a better look at it.
And yes, i’ll keep playing it until i find out how to become better, and how to do things right in the game.
It’s also highly recommended to give every profession a try, you’ll familiarize yourself with their combos and know what to avoid and how their burst and other important skills look like.
So, you’re a thief?
I could help you out with getting the whole thief deal sorted out, just PM me if you feel like it. Furthermore, however, take Psy’s advice and give the different professions out, even if you just make a character and delete it after an hour because it’s so boring. It’s extremely useful to understand other profession mechanics.
Spike damage is very high in this game, and playing a glassy character (like thieves tend to be) requires quick and smart reactions. I’d recommend trying a class/build that’s a little tankier if you’re just starting out. BM ranger is a good place to start imo.

Actually, I specialize in more survivable, tankier thief builds. Of course, though, BM is probably the most intuitive tanking build there is.
Oh guys, i dont even know what BM is… LOL!
And i dont play thief in pvp much, i just played it more, but i dont think thats the class for me you now?
I’m still trying things out, getting to know how every class work in pvp, and whats the most common builds, etc…
But i find guild wars 2 so complex, i’m not new to pvp games, but i played dota, and now lol so much, that i just can get the flow of the game you know? They are different games and the way they work its so different and i guess thats my problem

BM = Beastmaster, referring to the trait line in the ranger arsenal that basically allows them to regrow limbs and whatnot. O.o
If you don’t think that thief is your class, that’s ok too. Just try playing around with classes, see which one you like, and then we can find somebody to help you out with learning the class. It’s really more about what playstyle you want to purse (aggressive? defensive? team support via boons? etc.), after that it’s easy to understand the class. So, just figure out what class you want to play, and then it gets simpler from there.
I think i enjoyd more playing a mesmer, i like the idea of confusing your enemies, deceiving, etc… but i found that mesmers were like carries in this game, lol they deal so much dmg that they play that “deceiving” role by killing ppl faster than other classes, but still i enjoyed that concept, in fact i have 50% of pvp play time played as mesmer

Mes is pretty good, I admit. It’s true that they don’t quite use their illusions to deceive people (although they can be a nuisance at times, when trying to identify between them and a good mes- depends how you play, though), but they can be very good at the high-damage stuff, which is a load of fun. They also are very good at disrupting enemy lines of sight, simply because throwing illusions in their face makes a lot of colors and butterflies.
Lol that is really nice, winning games causing lag to other ppl! hahahaha!
Just joking, in fact i’ll try to play more as a mesmer, i’ll try to find ppl that play mes (abbreviation?) and see if they can help me, i’m really interested in playing this game, i’ve loved it, dont even mind if theres no room now for large tournaments, if there are problems, every games has its problems, even those huge E-sports games actually.

Mes is indeed the abbreviation for mesmer, just as engi is for engineer, ele for elementalist, necro for necromancer, warr for warrior, and guard for guardian.
Anyhow, I can find you a few helpful resources for mesmers. For one thing, here’s a whole list of guides to builds for mesmers: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/List-Find-your-Mesmer-Build-Guides/first#post1298253
Furthermore, I’m sure that Osicat or Pyroatheist would be willing to help point you in the right direction, both are fantastic mesmers, even if I don’t always agree with them (sorry to either of you if you’re reading this and not interested, by the way).
Apart from that, you can go to the mes forum and just ask for some help getting started there, they’re pretty welcoming over there.
Good luck.
Oh well, thanks for the advice, and all this support you’ve been giving to a new player (:
I’ll look futhermore into that list, and the mesmers forum, in searching for more aid.
Thanks again!
Hi, i bought this game in late november, and started going into pvp only now, and im having so much trouble in understanding how the pvp works in this game, i’m getting killed in half a sec, and i cant seem to find what do do about it, sometimes i get lucky and end up killing something but this is almost rare.
I want to know if there is some place where i can find information, guides, tutorship, because i need it, i’m loving the game, i’m loving pvp, but i cant get to understand the thing.
Please leave your tip, your advice, anything that could help me become a better player.
Thanks =)
I can tutor you ingame for all classes save Guardian. Add me, whisper me when I’m online.
I will. Thank you
I suggest starting out with a Phantasm spec with illusion signet. It is a bit beefier and better for beginners.
When you feel comfortable on it, move on to shatter specs. The playstyle is different, but shatter is dominant in higher play for it’s utility/teamfight damage.
You can spec selfishly in hotjoin while you learn (grab decoy, nullfield or mirror images, mass invis if you want), but since you’re highly valued for your teamutility slowly practice only relying on one stunbreak (blink or mirror images) and invulnas from sword 2 and F4 for damage mitigation.
Good starter weapons are GS and Sword+Pistol on phantasm spec, it’s a dueling spec though and requires quite passive play. When you move to shatter then pick up either GS (more aggressive) or Staff (more defensive) and Sword+Focus.
An example what I run when I play mesmer and which is the “classical” shatter build in tournas currently: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdRlwzyqHTTnGZ9ICqHYH49dkU0asWJF82FC-TsAg0CnI4SxljLDXSuscNsYZx8DA
As Arganthium said, read the forums and definitely watch osicats tutorials for example, they are very well made and he explains stuff very well. You can also check twitch and similar for gameplay vids from such players as Purie, Cutie, Azani, Xeph, Zorbi, Helseth, they are very talented mesmer players in tPvP.
I will look forward to all of this, thank you. Also i find that i need to practice more, i need to actually enter the game and play it until i manage to get the flow of the game. Which may take a little while, i dont know, all i know is that i’m thankful, i didnt even knew the community would be so helpful, and give a newbie such attention. Thank you

yeah, speaking of which, what is going on around here? Where’s the usual trolling and qq posts, is this the gw2 forums?
i won’t be able to help much in regards to playing your specific class, in this case, a mesmer.. but i am relatievly new to gw2’s PvP myself and here are some general rules i got to get me kickstarted. hope they help!
- first and foremost, when you have decided on a class, learn as much as you can about the class! know the traits / skills / and weapons inside out.. and what combinations work well!
- there are plenty of builds / guides / streams out there.. watch and learn!
- you can even use some of those builds you see people run.. but don’t rely on them entirely.. everyone plays differently so you can try some out, and tweak them as you learn how to use them
- learn all classes as others have mentioned! i don’t have a whole lot of time to play, so i prefer spending most time on my Guardian.. what i do do though is at least try to read the important skills / mechanics i should know of other classes.. namely – which moves to avoid, how to avoid them, and counters, etc. learning the downed mechanics of each class helped me a lot in being able to secure stomps
- when i first staretd, as times i had no idea what hit me as well at times.. so each time i got taken out, i spend the few seconds before i can WP again to get back into the fray to look back on what killed me, what i should have avoided, what i could have done better, etc
- always be mobile! and definitely don’t stay in red circles.. way less forgiving than in PvE/WvW.
- when running around, i am always turning my camera.. making sure no one’s sneaking up behind me, taking note of your surroundings, etc
- learn each map as well! what are the secondary objectives. what are the quickest routes from location A to B to C. also, use the terrain to your advantage! if you’re ranged, maybe high spots will help, if you’re melee, learn to avoid those areas, etc etc
- learn when to engage / disengage as well. if you know you’re going into a fight 1v3 and will lose, i’d rather you back out and go cap another point or something. cause if you die, you give free points away and your team will be another few more seconds playing with a man down. there is no shame in running! just make sure you come back stronger.
- i was lucky enough to have joined some pre-mades who were missing one or two, got on VoiP and they were friendly enough to guide me on what to do in general. that helped me pick it up a lot faster!
- so when you find someone you enjoyed playing with, don’t be afraid to add them, and can share strategy, etc
- practice, practice, practice!!
- last but not least… let having fun be the underlying factor to all the above. ; ))
there’s a lot mroe as well.. but for now.. just keep having fun! good luck! i used to be all PvE and dungeons, then a huge focus on WvW, and i LOVE PvP now. really wish i’d started sooner! of course, i still do all the game has to offer, but truly do enjoy PvP and it’s easy to jump on even if you have little time to play and get a match or two in. ; ))
