Standard Models and You
Dear Devs who read posts.
Standard Models. They’re happening, and that’s cool. But as they are now happening, realistically we will need to re-roll humans because at this ‘top level’ you are alluding to, how we present our own animations matter (precast/after cast/terrain etc).
So being such a forum hero, wanted to #first asking for an option to enable standard models on allies too. Players that like to hide animations, use verticality/terrain will benefit from such transparency in what their opponents see, and I guess now’s the time to ask for it.
Thx
P
While I don’t agree that you would have to re-roll anything because of these changes it does sounds like a good idea. It’d be nice to have three options: for enemies, allies and self.
So people were complaining that they felt forced into rolling an asura because they had smaller animations, now that they fix this people are now complaining that because they are no longer small they feel like they have to reroll human in order to properly exploit terrain?
kitten ed if they do and kitten ed if they don’t?
The only potential issue I see here is that it is a full model replacement, which means they will be using generic armor. If you want to show your armor to anyone in PvP, you might as well roll human otherwise no one except your teammates can see it.

I’m not sure who you’re sympathizing with here, but essentially yes. Except if these ‘people’ did complain, it was at launch and re rolling didn’t mean anything. Now it does, so I suppose as they say on NA ‘go figure’.

They said that armor models will be replaced too, by standard-per-class models.
So they put an exclusive pvp armor and an option to not see it.

The same can be said for PVE and WvW and the culling system. All those legendaries and fancy particle effects that people work so hard to get are not visible to the majority of people playing this game since their models get swapped with faceless and textureless models with limited animations.
Edit: +1 for allowing us to have the option on for allies. This new feature could be the solution to reducing all the visual clutter and particle effects in sPVP. Watching a group fight is like staring into a strobe light with disco colors.

The legendary affects are still persistent on the lowest settings.

I just checked and you’re right. It looks hilarious to see all the low-poly models running around with glowing weapons. Every attack looks like they’re mining.

I missed that in my read. You are right. I can see this as a problem I be it a small one but one does exist. It would be nice if they did not replace the armor at least. I don’t see why they have to standardize the armor.

They have to standardize the armor because some racial armor wont translate to human models.
Also, in response to OP – keep in mind this only affects your enemy team – your team still looks the same (to you) – and it is fully optional. Not really seeing any issue here. Seems like a win-win kind of change (and, IT IS OPTIONAL and only from your perspective – why should we care if people who want to see us as human during pvp matchs can do so OPTIONALLY).

I think you’ve completely misread my post dude… I’m happy with the changes, I’d just like the added option to view yourself as human (and allies would be nice too) to save more competitive players (who couldn’t care less about carrot and stick related issues) having to re-roll (Primarily for alts).

Good point about racial armors. As for why should we care if people who want to see us as human during pvp. The players that care would argue. “I worked hard so that I could get and show off my armor and like getting complements on my looks.”
Personally for me. As they replace the dyes anyways I don’t care so much.

Displaying racial armour as its human racial equivalent would fix that quite easily but I suspect it’s to simplify and speed up target recognition; so, for example, when you see a male human in cabalist armour you instantly know he’s a necromancer.

Didn’t that go the way of the dodo bird when they brought in outfits? I haven’t play in a long time to know.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

I think that a better solution would be to display the standard armor if you have racial armor equipped. Otherwise show your armor in the human equivalent. The idea is to make it so that players don’t look like clones. That is unless they have 5 different sets and don’t have duplicates. Then you could still be able to tell the players apart.
To be honest though I don’t think it will be that big of a deal unless you have multiple players of the same armor weight.

from what i understand, there will be one model per profession, not weight tier like the culling placeholder models.
that means it should be clear who’s who so long as you don’t bring two of the same class, in which case, shoutcasters will have a little more problem (i know i can’t read those names while the character is moving everywhere)
Will the streaming of these tournaments in the future use the standard models when we see the big official ones on twitch?
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
^sounds like tournament organizers/streamers would have the option
awesome i wont be able to see all the egotistic players suing nice armors and legendary weapons

Why are weapons being standardized?
Because weapons scale with the players race.

i dunno, on the blog post it said “upscaling asurans is not an option” why?
why should everyone else get their model turned into a rank 1 rabbit because people are abusing the small race?
i have a giant norn (with “the giant” in his name)who will now look like a rank 1 human,
i have a kitted out warrior with the 3000g greatsaw skin which will now look like the dull horrible greatsword you buy from the vendor.
yes asurans had an advantage and it needed fixing, but why turn EVERYONE into a rank 1 scrub?
why not just give us the option to make asuras 30% larger in pvp.
not to mention that adding this at the same time as they finally add a pvp armour is just hilariously ironic.
I’d rather have the option to create a base standard model character but, be able to make it unique through looks (skin color, face type, hair, eyes, armor, weapons, etc. just no size adjustments). This way all the gear we’ve worked for is still seen by everyone in a match.
If a modded base standard model is used this could then be shown instead when the option is selected. Otherwise anyone not using the standard model would be displayed as the default model when in a game.

if you read the post it says standard models are an option in the menu i think…
Edit: Confirmed it IS an option so if you don’t really care then you can turn them off.

The way you as a player experience the game will not change – nor will the way you look for enemy players WHO WANT TO SEE HOW YOU LOOK. However, if (for competitive reasons), they would rather see your character as standardized target (again for competitive reasons), they can.
To repeat the most important part – The way you experience the game will not change.
So, the basic argument against is that you want enemy players to be forced to see your character, even if they dont want to.
This is proof people will complain about pretty much everything.
Dunno, it doesn’t really make sense you can win a a Glorious hero armor, where only 5 -10 players in the world can wear it, and noone can see it during a competitive match.
It sounds really “weird”.

Sweet sweet warrior nerf.
Am I good?… I’m good.
Wait, so everyone will look the same? I can’t see the outfit styles of the enemy? They release that at the same time as new PvP reward armor?
Hopefully I am wrong with what I said above. Otherwise, it is just another bad decision.

its an option, so it can be turned off for you personally but lets be realistic, everyone will have it on due to the asura issues, so yep, now you will look like just another rank 1 clone no matter what race you are or how much time, gold and real world cash you’ve spent on your look.
Anet: “upscaling asuran characters was not the answer we were looking for”
but making everyone look like a noob was? bravo anet,
one more fail for your impressively large collection!
R.I.P outfit sales.
I think it’s the perfect solution for the asura animation prob. also why would anyone care if your enemy thinks your pretty all they want is to stomp you not tell you u look cute in that armor and its only in a match its not like they are forcing u guys outside the match to look like the standard models.

At this time spectators will not see standard models. This includes shoutcasters.
While there are some arguments to have this available in all PvP formats we want to see how this new feature is used by the high-end, skilled players at the top tier of PvP before considering rolling this out to the more broad PvP user base.

why would anyone care what your enemy thinks.
because “Foegore the Giant” should look like this…
not some skinny rank 1 human!

In the eyes of a (true) pvp’er that’s just an easy target to spot and evade nothing more

seems fair enough. The whole animation issue is 99% problem for players, not viewers. Albeit it would be nice if viewers saw what was goin on too.

or maybe give us option to make asuras bigger (there is even model from this box of fun ) or let us turn on standard model only on asuras ? sounds a bit crap I spent a lot of gold on my char 4 legendaries and now iam gona look like human low lvl crap ;(
One of the best changes to GW2 yet. I don’t really care what my opponents look like, or how they perceive me, but I completely understand the problem with prestigious armor and standardized models.
Being able to choose individually what races should use standard-models would imo the the ideal solution. Because tbh at the moment there is only one problem, and that is Asuras.
If that won’t happen I’m still happy with this change.

Iam still for it but anyway I think that they should give us option to choose race etc. right now it is all or nothing it sucks a bit and dont forget that it is gona be only in team arena . why no solo or hotjoin why ? They have system but dont implement it ,just why ?
So long as I don’t have to reroll as human – I want those sweet birthday gifts on all 12 of my characters.

i feel this kinda lessens the impact of this change. being able to easily see who is what is important for clarity when watching a stream, at least for newcomers.
This is a very good change. One that I believe many people would enjoy.
Mmm, some of you in here seem to be slightly confused about how this will work. I’m gonna copy and paste a paragraph from the announcement. Read it very carefully:
So what does all of this mean for you? It’s pretty simple. There’s now a setting in the General Options tab of your F11 menu. If you enable the Standard Enemy Models and enter a game type that supports them, all of your opponents will be represented by these models based on their gender and profession. This set will only replace enemy models; your teammates will not be affected. As this functionality is intended for high-end, skilled players at the top tier of PvP, this option will work only in Team Arenas and Custom Arenas that allow Tournament Commands.
It’s an OPTION that only affects your enemies. You and your teammates won’t be affected, and you can still look like a pretty blossom or a fierce blood thirst Norn
Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!
Please have an option to disable graphic finishers as well and replace them with the basic finisher! Asura visuals were hard to see so you normalized the models! The same thing needs to happen with giant flashy finishers that blind me! How am I supposed to see anything when a giant worm comes out of the ground and covers everything! Oh here comes a hambow right out of the worm’s gullet to Earthshaker me!
Wahoo! Bye frands!

this this THIS!^
asuras are the problem, only asuras should get model swapped.
its especially strange that anet are fine with noobifying all of us none asura players too,
i know for me this will likely mean the end of outfit purchases
anet, makes the noobification option for asuras only!
PvE people, pls go back to where you belong. This is PvP, not FvF.
Especially the guy who repeatedly calls “noob” players who haven’t spent X000 golds on their appereance. This should be a competitive game, not the new version of Second Life.
“Made for top tier”. This wasn’t intended for you if you care what other people see you as.
Am I good?… I’m good.
Your allies will still see your looks, so someone will still notice your swag.
Literally, I have never noticed any enemy looking cool or whatever anyway, I simply don’t have time to check out their looks in the middle of a pvp match…
Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!
This is the greatest change ever! For too long, Vee Wee has died over and over and over and over because Vee Wee was paralyzed in awe over the enemy team’s armor and weapons! If you ask Vee Wee, Vee Wee thinks that these are such dirty tactics! Worse than any turret engi or hambow! How can Vee Wee even play PvP if Vee Wee is just immobilized whenever Vee Wee comes into visual range of the enemy! This was way worse than any immob stacking or immob bug! Thank you anet for this fix! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
