So i made an engineer not too long ago because i thought it would be fun. Turns out not only do i hate playing against cele specs i also dont enjoy playing them. I know some people go zerk with the same build as cele engies run but i was wondering if static discharge is viable at all? I ran it a couple of times today and had a pretty hard time even though it was pretty fun.

The two problems i encountered was it was hard to survive, and i didn’t really know what playstyle i should use. I couldnt act like a normal cele engie because i got bursted down really quick, but it also felt weird playing like a thief or a mesmer :p

Anyways mainly is this worth trying out and if so any tips?

You’re going to have a bad time against most meta builds I think. No stab means you’re going to die to a lot of celengis, and power rangers can handle the burst. Terrormancers will defecate directly down your throat and mediguards will easily out sustain you.

It is viable up until the top (organized) tier, at which point you start getting camped by the enemy team’s zerkers all game. You want to start engagements at range, get your first fire/air procs off, then magnet or close into your target for your burst finish. You want to stay on the edge/outside of large teamfights most of the time like a power ranger or mesmer would, and you can use some of the same spots they do to decent effect. Feel free to give up a cap in a 1v1 if staying on point means dying— you can kill safely at range and take the point back afterwards.

I played Static Discharge engi for a while. Had some success.

The trick is surprise, hitting them with a stun or immobilize before unleashing all your burst before they can react. The amount of damage you can drop in a couple of seconds is pretty impressive, puts most builds on their back foot and can even possibly down zerk thieves and eles in a single go. However, no nades or strong condi means you aren’t doing much damage during the time all your rifle and toolbelt skills are on cooldown, and if the target managed to dodge or block a good chunk of that damage, and/or get the space to recover health afterwards, you’re in trouble.
