I think the key to keeping the game healthy is to add more incentive for casual competition. The best way to do this, is to rework the leaderboards so there is a concrete sense of progression.

I think one of the old LoL ladder systems would be quite suitable for the medium-low population this game exhibits.

This is roughly how it worked:

  • When players reached level 30 they were allowed to start queuing up for Ranked Solo/Duo.
  • At that point they start off at base Elo of 1200. Their first 10 games are placement matches.
    • Placement matches grant (or deduct) more Elo than normal matches.
  • After placement matches —>
    • Elo < 1200 => you were unranked (you can see your Elo in client, but you have no position on the ladder)
    • 1200 <= Elo < 1450 => you are Bronze
    • 1450 <= Elo < 1600 => you are Silver
    • 1600 <= Elo < 1850 => you are Gold
    • 1850 <= Elo => you are Platinum

These numbers can differ, but this kind of tiered ladder is a much better way to incentivize casual competition for end of season rewards. For example:

  • At the end of a season players get a Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat trimmed cape.
  • Another option could be weapon skins based on what tier you ended on.
  • Glorious Hero Armor should be reserved strictly for major tournament placements.

I think you may want to rephrase that. The game is relatively high pop compared to most other mmos. It’s just that most of its players are not into spvp. While you have a good idea I feel they could go about it better and Im pretty sure the game already uses a"hidden" elo system for match making.

I think it’s a hidden system because when I queue ranked alone I play against people who actually challenge me at times (I dont get to free shot as a ranger). However, when Im with my brother who hasn’t played as much ranked as I have I get to sit and free cast longbow skills all day.

Good points made. This game has a relatively high population compared to other MMOs. Only WoW has a more stable playerbase in terms of longevity of the MMO itself. I believe GW2 used to use the Glicko system rather than Elo. Not sure if that is still the case.

Does anyone actually care about the leaderboards? What’s the point of showing individual rankings for a team based game. Now, once they start ranking guilds, that will become more interesting.

I cannot even think how many times this specific type of ladder progression system was mentioned on these forums. Anyone remember the CDI, about this exact topic? It has nearly been two years since they asked if we wanted something like this, and have yet to even do anything about it, at all.

Honestly, why bother, why even bother posting it again. You know, anet hasn’t listened to a single thing about this, for nearly two years, what is going to change?

Sounds like a good idea to me. And the MMR would already work that way. They just have to base the leaderboard off of MMR, and change the way it is presented (consolidated into gold, silver, bronze as you say).

I like the idea, but what happens in the case of me wanting to play with a newer player or friends in a different tier? Are players able to temporarily drop tiers etc? (Sorry if you’ve covered this, I skim read)

Edit: Nevermind, you weren’t taking tiers into consideration for matchmaking right?

I agree… Until things are fixed i wont even look at it.
But step1 to win in the leader board. Play a Meta!
Step 2- Play a Meta that spams & smash the same button over & over again.
Step3- your in the top 100. yay…congradualtion!

This is roughly how it worked: snip

Other than tiered rewards, this is how the previous leaderboards and rating system worked implicitly.

Glicko2 has rating deviation and volatility factors besides just the rating in ELO. These additional factors affect how much a person can move up or down after a match. New players have bigger rating deviation and volatility values because the system is unfamiliar with them. The old leaderboards required 11 games for a player to be displayed.
