Since the patch lots of people went to PvP. They’re mostly new comers.

The problem is not pairing, low skill levels, queues or whatever. It’s how “elite” players react.

There’s not been a single game without some troll with toxic attitude. I had to turn off chat because I got so frustrated with all the comments.

New players will learn how sPvP work if you help them! Not if you insult them.

Read what the dev said here : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Appropriate-Pairing Same as I did.

“That said, there has been a huge influx of new players, and this is likely what you are noticing. They are likely going to need some time to learn the ropes and figure out how to play. May I suggest taking a patient, mentoring approach?”

And people who are trying PvP and don’t like it will leave in a few weeks. Other players will understand the game better.

We play this game for fun. If you don’t enjoy it at least don’t pester us with it. You can always go play any other game, and there’s plenty of them.

There’s a lot of toxicity from both sides right now…
PvE’rs getting mad for being told what to do and how to do it; and the PvP’rs not wanting to deal with PvE’rs in PvP.

It’s both sides that are toxic, the only side that can relieve some of the issues is Anet. And yes, the players themselves too but don’t hope for that.

I think, It rly depends.
Of course, being impolite to new players isn’t good thing, however, new players also have to realize some things.

First of all, if you are new, it might not be a good idea to directly jump into competitive game modes like teamQ.

In addition, you should use your common sense.
Even if it’s pvp, the game mode is called “Conquest”. So capturing points might actually be usefull. That multiple players of one team on a node, without eny enmies might not be the best for the team is also common sense.

So you played 500 hotjoin games, still dont understand how to play conquest and dont like that you get insulted for it? Well PVP is not for you then.
You dont care about actually playing good and just want dem PVE rewards and hope other will carry you?
You think people were learning to play the game for last year just so they can teach PVErs now? No i actually just want fun games.
When i started the game i at first played hotjoin till i knew everything about class and basics of PVP in this game then i did research on teamque, soloque and only then i did my first tpvp games… Why? Cause i did not want to kitten off people by making them loose.

This is a stupid topic because the toxic attitude is on both sides yet makes it seem like only the veterans are to blame. I was in a 3v2 hotjoin match testing out a new build yesterday when some rank 2 on the higher numbered team started the toxic mapchat comments when I told another player I’m not going to play in an outnumbered hotjoin match seriously. As if I owed the guy my best effort in such a match…

Reposting from previous thread:

You’re assuming way too much. Do you know how often I have tried to nicely explain things to new comers only for them to:

a) Not respond at all (most common)
b) Tell me to keep quiet

Just to make sure that they can see what I’m saying, I sometimes type with /s instead of /t. So when I’m capping close and another guys is standing on the point with me, I’ll say “/s go!” Only to have no response at all.

Then I’ll even PM them in case they still haven’t seen it. Still no response. I’m sick and tired of explaining things only to be greeted with radio silence. I’ll still keep trying though since there might be someone who will listen.

In short, your attempt to characterize most of us veteran players as evil and “toxic” and all the new comers as hapless well meaning innocents in PvP is biased and extremely flawed.

You’re also assuming two things:

1) They know that Team Queue and Solo Queue are competitive matches while hot join isn’t. Where would they learn this? It doesn’t say it anywhere clearly, and the TeamQ and SoloQ come first in the panel whereas hot join can actually be confusing to learn how to join with that large browser menu.

2) That hotjoin teaches someone how to play tourneys correctly. Hot join is a mindless zerg match with no teaching involved. The players learn the maps sure, but they still don’t realize that four capping one point doesn’t make it cap faster, they don’t realize that going far at first is a bad idea. The point system makes them feel like capping the most points makes them the best player, and that defending the point gets you nothing. Hotjoin actually enforces bad habbits not good ones.

Why not? There’s no sign on the outside of these game types that says that this isn’t for new players. In fact, there’s an MMR that’s supposed to pair players with similarly skilled players, so new players are more likely to get paired with players that are also new.

As an old player who is new to PvP (even with past MMO’s I was a carebear), I have noticed a lot of hostility from both new and old players.
I myself ignore old players spouting off their “learn2play, noob, idiot, blah” crap. I also ignore whatever hostile comments new players make as well.
I find it funny that some experienced players get mad and tell new players to l2p. Isn’t that the point of why the new players are playing sPvP? To l2p? :P

they still don’t realize that four capping one point doesn’t make it cap faster

That’s actually NOT how it works for new players and MMR. The current MMR system artificially inflates them to somewhere in the ~300 ranked area.

So for someone legit ranked in the 2-300 range, it kittening sucks being paired with legit new players who are merely added into that range due to a lack of games played. Have fun 3/4v5ing the majority of your games like that, because that’s what I’ve been faced with since the patch.

The simplest answer is to block new players from entering solo/team queue until they’ve played 50-100 games of hotjoin. That’s not too much to ask and it would weed out those who don’t give a kitten about PvP/learning the game in-general.

So before you say, “relax bro, just teach”, have fun playing with the player I was teamed with earlier today who said this little gem,

“How do I go back to PvE?”…mid-match. Of course they tried leaving, and were reconnected, upon which they were confused and kept asking how to leave the game. ANet: put a BOLD notice saying what Game Browser vs Arena means.

I’ve never done PvP yet, but if they add the PvP Masquerade (now called Tribal) armor set to a reward track, you can bet I’ll be there.

Yeah, I’m a PvE guy, and I’ve played since GW1, but I definitely don’t think I’m better than everyone else. If anyone gives me tips on how to play better/smarter, I’ll always respond and thank them. I have no problem with that. Heck, I know I’ll get slaughtered without help, so any tips are greatly appreciated.

The game is not only better without players harassing each other, but also when players are willing to accept help. So if that Tribal armor shows up in PvP, so will I, and I’ll accept any help players are willing to give me with gratitude. Who knows, I just might find PvP more fun than I thought!

I think Anet just needs to change the starting point, no reason to add requirements. But its simple logic, and every sport does this, you start from the bottom and work your way up. I think WoW did this well with Arena ratings, you start from 0 and work your way up to as high as your skill can take you, placing anyone in the top 300 is just absurd and unfair to everyone veteran or new. It has nothing to do with personal or mental issues it’s just the fact that PvP is a more competitively oriented game mode in which people over time simply develop the need to win. Its the same as with “zerker dungeon elitists” which over time certainly do not want to enjoy something they did over 1000+ times, its just the reward and tokens they want.

Furthermore, PvP is more dependent upon teamplay so if one link in the chain is horrible the rest is pulled down too. And it is perfectly understandable in hot-join which is intended as a casual playground (no one actually takes it seriously) but when you see a level 2 player in solo ranked and he/she starts asking questions about basic map mechanics on map chat in the middle of the fight… Oh that certainly isn’t going to sit well with veterans.

May I suggest taking a patient, mentoring approach?"

This is the most comical comment of them all. You should try to follow that. I did and these are the (screenshotted) reactions after asking ppl friendly to not cap home with 3:

“kittenlol”
“Thats a matter of opinion”
“Thats your strategy, ill use mine”
“Shut up noob look at your points”
“I dont care if you dont like my strategy. The game is just a pleasure be cool”
“???”
“Go tell that to someone who cares crybaby”

Or what happens most of the time. They stay silent and do their own thing anyway. Its totally useless to act like a mentor. Ppl dont want to get mentored. They want to screw around.

The best thing is to be quiet and endure the annoyances. It doesnt help anyone to say something about it. They sure as hell whont listen to you.

Lets hope Anets developers implement a proper MMR system and tutorial one day. So the system doesnt match ppl during their second game with tournament level players that played 10.000-15.000 games. And yes Justin its very likely that a pvprank 2 is on par with top 100 players that played this game since day 1.

The problem with telling people what to do is that you are telling them what to do.
There’s a saying I picked up as my last job as a QA.
“A manager tells people what to do. A leader tells them how to do it.”
Instead of saying, “do this.”
Try, “this is the goal, and this is how you obtain it.”

The other issue being that during the game you don’t necessarily have the time to write a novel about it. And given how many PvE players are getting into PvP lately, you don’t want to do it every single game. Plus, if you write a LOT, they won’t even bother reading you (even if you write a lil’ bit sometimes they won’t read you either). Not to mention the possibility that they don’t comprehend english.

ArenaNet needs to create a tutorial and to fix leaderboards. The quicker the better but as ever, it won’t be done before months.

No.
The problem is WHEN to tell them.
The time before a match in team and soloQ isn’t long enough to give new players (which shouldn’t be in the arenas) a complete PvP crash course.
In Hot Join there is even less time.

Talking about “toxic” (hate dat word…). What is REALLY toxic are the 8vs8 and 10vs.10 (custom) arenas you get thrown into via “join now” these days, as all 5 vs. 5 arenas are full.
Especially in 10 vs. 10 you wont learn anything about splits, tactics in general or even fighting. It’s mostyl zerging so you also won’t learn much about proper groupfights. If some players want to do 10 vs. 10 or 8 vs. 8, because it is so much fun, I’m fine with it. But don’t let all those new, “innocent” pvp players which might also try out the arenas some day, get corrupted via those Zerg matches.

i think its inevitable, anet put a cap on track progression that you can make in hotjoins, so after a couple of games the newcomers will be forced to go to tournaments.

imho if they allowed casuals and newcomers to remain in hotjoins then there would be less clashing between the elitists and the newcomers.

edit: also the removal of 8v8 means that each of the 5 players has greater responsibility,
in an 8v8 a couple of players who don’t know what they’re doing won’t cause the whole team to fail aslong as afew players on the team know what to do.

They can learn it all if they all played in the same “league”/ranks, not getting paired up with everyone who isnt anymore at that “discovery”/learning point in spvp

The problem with telling people what to do is that you are telling them what to do.
There’s a saying I picked up as my last job as a QA.
“A manager tells people what to do. A leader tells them how to do it.”
Instead of saying, “do this.”
Try, “this is the goal, and this is how you obtain it.”

and a good employee does it without being told.

We can go round and round

How would a good employee do that without being told if the expectation was never established?
Your logic is flawed.

“Do you guys mind not going home with 3 at the start of the game? We get outnumbered in the middle if you do that”

Silence + continues capping with 3

“Guys please help middle we are outnumbered here”

Ye ye quit your whining, you use your strategy and we use ours ok? Everyone has their own way to play the game. That doesnt mean that yours is the best

Moral of the story. Everyone including people during their first few hours in pvp think they are experts. Its totally useless to try and mentor since not a single person listens even if you ask them really nicely.

Try it out and youll see.

I dunno where I was whining. LOL
I would try giving people advice in sPvP, but if you read, you would know that I am new to sPvP and that would probably not be a good idea.
I mean, if you want, I’ll give it a shot. Hopefully nobody listens to me, because I would be giving them advice with no prior knowledge.

This is actually what it is like. The newbies in this game are so strange, they just don’t give a single kitten.

This was an example of a common situation that occurs quite often in the games i play. Mind that im around rank 200 on the leaderboard atm so games at my MMR shouldnt be filled with newcomers only (but for some reason they are).

I ask them nicely to help out in areas where its needed. But in my eyes new players are very egocentrical. They seem to focus purely on geting their personal score as high as possible by zerging and capping points (even if its empty and their entire team is there) killing bosses asap etc.

Mentoring doesnt work at all when it comes to new players. Since all new players think they are experts.

It isn’t really about the win really. It is more about getting good matches. Nobody likes to get stomp hard and nobody likes to stomp new players all day. Zerk dungeon runners aren’t elitist by any means. Everyone wants people to be a team player and contribute. It is impossible to get a new player set up and explained it to them since there really isn’t time. No lobby no nothing. PvP rewards are just extra most players who are ranked high that do PvP do it because they really like the game mode more than anything.

Because there is no way to explain to a new player in the middle of a fight or match. Explaining it during a match is to stop everything and not play PvP. Sure a Dev has stated to be understanding and so on. But Anet needs to do something like a lobby so that people can talk otherwise you can’t really teach or explain something.

It’s also that you get matched with them many times.. Which is making it hard to not say something rude when they’re flaming by themselves..
