Of all things, there is much for new players, and the new player experience being delivered in this feature patch.

But I still see we have this not-so-great PvP tutorial, practically non-existent WvW tutorial (basically a PvE Scout), and pre-set pvp builds that players don’t even know they have loaded, because the game doesn’t tell how anything works in the sPvP lobby.

Players are never directed to the training grounds either…SO how about:

All PvP reward tracks are locked until you complete a basic “Training Track” that would involve mechanics in the training area and progress something similar to: (excluding cannons…because no current maps use them)

Each of these will have a popup window (like hints) that would describe actions and rewards for these mechanics. (the hints/popup descriptions will be in bold)

  • Visit the Training Grounds area.
(Here, we will learn about the basic mechanics of the various PvP Environments.)
  • Open your PvP Build window.
(This screen will help you build your character to fight alongside teammates in PvP matches. The Traits, Sigils and Amulet are all you need to get started in PvP. These will change as you swap between PvP and PvE areas, so be sure to open this window when you enter any PvP zone to double-check your setup.)
  • Rally an ally in the Training Grounds.
(Keeping your allies alive is important in all game-types, but even more so in a PvP environment, so be sure to revive fallen allies to keep your team strong.)
  • Stomp an Enemy in the Training Grounds.
(Just as important as reviving allies, defeating an enemy is also a great way to strengthen your team, and make your enemies rethink their strategy.)
  • Use a Trebuchet in the Training Grounds.
(This secondary objective is located on the Battle of Khylo PvP map and allows you to bombard an area with heavy hitting Trebuchet shots to give your allies the edge in battle.)
  • Destroy a Trebuchet in the Training Grounds.
(Both teams in Battle of Khylo start the match with a trebuchet ready for them, so destroying the enemies is a great way to reduce any advantage they can gain from it.)
  • Repair the broken Trebuchet in the Training Grounds.
(Even if your Trebuchet is destroyed, or you destroy the enemy team’s Trebuchet, the Repair Kit is a tool that can make it usable again during a match.)
  • Gain a temporary buff by defeating The Chieftain or Svanir in the Training Grounds.
(By defeating these neutral monsters on the Forest of Niflhel, you will grant your team an instant 25 points as well as a helpful buff to boost your team’s power and stats.)
  • Kill the enemy Guild Lord.
(On the Legacy of the Foefire map, there is a powerful NPC heavily guarded in each team’s base. By defeating this NPC you will grant your team an instant 150 points.)
  • Channel and capture a neutral node in the Training Grounds.
(Many maps in PvP require you to channel for a brief moment in order to capture an objective or buff. Such as the Orb of Ascension on Spirit Watch, the Cannon on Skyhammer and various buffs on Temple of the Silent Storm.)

>>This is where the Training Area stops, and the in-game training begins<<

  • Capture a neutral capture point in any PvP match.
  • Capture an enemy controlled Capture Point in any PvP match.
  • Defend a capture point your team controls for 10 seconds in any PvP match.
  • Rally an ally in any PvP match.
  • Stomp an Enemy in any PvP match.

-Done-

“Capture an enemy controlled Capture Point in any PvP match.”
do we need to reword this?

“Neutralize an enemy controlled Capture Point and capture it in any PvP match.”

it takes 4 seconds to neutralize an enemy controlled capture point, but it takes 10 seconds to capture a neutral capture point.

total time would be around 14 seconds to turn an enemy controlled capture point.

on certain maps, if their home point is vacate and the distance to middle point is not very far, sometimes i find it better to just neutralize their home point and then rush back in to join the team fight at middle.

That isn’t the point of a basic tutorial, it is designed to teach players what each mechanic in a match does, then it is up to the player how to play around those mechanics.

And why reword it? Capture (what you need to do) an enemy controlled Capture Point (where you need to do it) in any PvP match. The only other way i could reword it would be “a capture point belonging to the enemy team.” but it means the same thing.

They could also do with adding base “builds” and teaching the difference between the roles within PvP. Even if it’s just a link to metabattle or “here are commonly used builds by this profession”. If someone was new to sPvP and they went into a match with the starting build, they would be completely confused with having a build that wasn’t of their own make in PvE.

GW1 had pre-made builds players could choose from when creating a pvp-only character, I wonder if a similar system could work.

PvP could use a rework of its tutorial for new players, especially since there is a new shiny matchmaking system. It would be good even if people are only checking out it out for achievement points!

I’d like to see an option for live hints for every map (you can disable it if you want) like “don’t cap the node in 2+” , ’don’t be overnumbered for only one guy" “go on metabattle.com and don’t use no sense builds” etc. In practice and unranked for example.

I think it would be very usefull for a lot of new players, something like a special collections of common mistakes.

It’s very important players can access to it very easily.

I am STILL seeing new players in sPvP with the default loadout builds that are supplied, but have no idea they have them, they are not being properly told that their sPvP builds/sigils/traits is different from their general PvP set.

How could Anet think this wouldn’t be a factor in driving away new players from sPvP? They are using something completely different that they may be using elsewhere, but don’t even know it, (probably) resulting in them functioning differently or ineffectively by the game’s general fault.

It really is insane – I see people die to the profession specific trainers in the Mists 2+ years later

PvPing in this game is mostly an OUT OF GAME learning experience – watching streams, reading on forums, reading wiki, metabattle for builds etc etc

It is unacceptable

fact there isn’t even a How to control your pet Tutorial for pve even most new rangers just let the pet go rampant same goes for pvp all aways on Aggressive or on passive + forgotten about.

its better to teach them from a low lvl how to rather than trying to teach a old dog new tricks.

TBH, that is because the AI isn’t good, so they just have increased damage, people will try and facetank and just blow up like they were fighting a champ in PvE.

this game needs tutorial with match vs AI

unfortunately, unlike other games which have a more team deathmatch style of play, conquest is a lot more complex. Getting bots to fight AND rotate/hold points would be a very difficult task (I’d imagine, I’m not a programmer). No point just having bots run at each other, as that would not explain the primary objective of conquest very well.

The game has very poor AI on everything that could possibly use it (PvE mobs are dumb as bricks, pets, summons, etc….) adding AI will not help teach new players unfortunately.

Oddly enough, I just went through the portal to the starter island you get 1 time when entering pvp on a new character.

It actually has some of the basics for stomping, ressing, and capping points.

But it is not enforced in any way shape and form, and can be completely skipped by going to the little green star on the map anyways.

This is a bit of a shame to see in all honesty.
