Q:
So I’m sure we’ve all queued in ranked arena with 4 people and getting a pug that does not communicate at all and has no concept of teamplay while being against a full organised team. This was not that big of an issue previously since people that pugged team arenas generally had some desire to communicate with a team otherwise they would just solo queue.
One suggestion I have is to have a minimum number of unranked games won before being allowed to enter ranked arena, therefore requiring a minimum amount of team arena experience before being allowed to play games that affect the ranking of the rest of your team. What wouldn’t work is total games played or using rank as an indicator, since custom arenas do not promote any kind of team play.
A step further from this would be to have a similar restriction on unranked arenas requiring a certain number of custom arena games won, which would give new players a chance to get used to their class in pvp before trying proper matches.

I also support that but for slightly different reasons. I believe that actually ranked games are really an unfriendly place for beginners and should be locked until you have won at least, let’s say, 5 unranked games. This way, beginners would be better prepared to face whatever they meet on ranked game.
This should be part of the NPE.
Yet another elitist post. It’s all fine and dandy to espouse Ayn Rand social darwinism when you win often.
However, I’d be willing to bet that the most gem store purchases come from pve and “bad” players like me.
I’ll laugh when you’ve driven all the players away and you can enjoy the last day of the game and congratulate yourself on finally getting the play level you wanted.

I’m sorry, but how on earth is this elitist? Unranked gives you the exact same gameplay as ranked, but you won’t affect your own ranking or more importantly, the ranking of the rest of your party.
Furthermore, we aren’t talking about putting in a year’s worth of effort to be able to compete in ranked arena, we’re talking like maybe a week at the very most.

I beg to differ.
Alot of experienced people left or paused the game due those beginners.
If they know they are separated (like this patch actually should’ve done, remember: r80 with r80, MMR etc etc) then the experienced ppl would return.
It will also be more enjoying for beginners to play along with beginners, some sort of bootcamp, like you have in CoD, untill a certain level/rank.
Most beginners stop PvP’ing because they got facestomped (like I did 2years ago but returned after all 1.5yr ago)
Separate beginners from experienced.
All I ask.
Unranked is not the same play. If it’s anything like hotjoin it’s too chaotic to play well.
In addition to that, it’s inferior by definition.
It’s the attitude I object to.. making airy condescending suggestions to “help” while actually ( and not very subtly ) claiming to be a superior player.
If you want to help, teach, the way I do in dungeons.
I don’t understand why you are going so overboard with this. All I was suggesting is giving a minimum number of wins that equate to up to a week of effort before opening up unranked, just like how a pve player has to play a minimum amount of pve before they can access Arah explorable mode, is this being PvE elitist? Arah does not have the same gameplay as AC after all
Also I also object to YOUR attitude, pouncing on me and calling me elitist for suggesting that someone with 200+ wins has more experience than someone with less than 20 wins. This is total wins since buying the game.
And this is NOTHING compared to the elitist scene where you have to spend 2 years playing the game to be accepted into competitive PvP. A week is nothing close to 2 years.
And believe me, I DO teach PvP to players in both my PvP and PvE guild as well as anyone who asks, but I’m not about to teach the entire population of beginners in PvP for very obvious reasons.

I’m going to express my opinion here.. I agree there should be a “requirement” to join ranked. I also do not see how saying this is Elitist..
Also Unranked is “Chaotic” as you put it because that’s where most of the people we want out of ranked are. The problem with trying to HELP people… First of all in a dungeon.. you have endless time to try to explain something to someone. In PvP… people need to know what to do before they step in. YES they can figure out what to do in Unranked… so don’t use the “How are they supposed to learn what to do without doing it” argument. People may call us elitist or w/e they wanna say but I have tried countless times to help people only to be called a noob, baddie, etc by a people that say KILL BEAST EVERYTIME IT RESPAWNS only to die 1v1 vs Chieftain. I’m all for helping people… but I have realized there is no point anymore.. So that’s why I agree there should be a requirement to SOLO Q into Ranked.
I don’t think it is elitist to meet a certain requirement to do ranked…it’s just to make sure that you know at least the basics of a PvP match.
Newbies shouldn’t do ranked if they never played PvP before because they will be pretty much lost, they will be smashed over and over, and in the end their teammates will rage against them… Do you think that first experience in PvP would be enjoyable for a newcomer? I don’t think so…

5? make it 300…that is still nothing (Since we’re talking about experience after many thousands competitive matches, and i mean competitive not hotjoin or practice bs) but maybe, just maybe, they would be able to stomp and rez…at least

Then that would be elitism and by all means, undesirable since it haunts players from PvP instead of encourage them to give it a try.
There is point where you have already learned the basics and you are ready to play ranked. The rest comes with experience on the field.
I suspect by your words that you only care for your own victory. You shouldn’t think of other players as simple minions to your service. They just come in all flavors and shapes, and usually do their best

300 is a bit over the top, try 20-50 wins, something that’s a reasonable goal for newer players to aim for.
I don’t really think the OP suggestion is elitist or over the line. Its true that a lot of people join ranked when they don’t truly understand the game and they affect their teammates because of this fact. IDK about Archaons suggestion of 300 would be right I think he was exaggerating to make a point but an amount of games played or games won wouldn’t be a bad idea imo. Maybe 5 games won or 10 games played in Unranked would be a nice number. Too many times I see people running 3 or 4 to buffs in forest because they don’t understand what is a primary objective and secondary objective. Put those same players in Temple and once tranquility pops its basically chaos. I don’t think ranks should determine your eligibility to join ranked games but wins/games played wouldn’t be a bad idea.
And I have to disagree with people that say unranked is the same as hotjoin. In unranked you do get an idea of rotations and an actual idea of how fights will play out unlike hotjoin which is a hot mess.

i sometimes really want them being like ai minions, maybe you would be able to control them or make them read team chat at least, instead of going svanir with 2 ppl on start and getting rekt while you have to go tryhard mode 1v3 on mid just to stay alive waiting for someone who is not coming
and then they eventually discover team chat just in time to write “Why noone helped with boss?”
so…yeah…
(edited by Archaon.9524)
Today I had a player who died 2 times a in row@svanir.
I was talking to another guy and he told me that he also saw him dieng when he tried to solo it. (dps guard, no cooldowns).
I had so many noobs the last 2 days, just check out my w/l rate. I had ~70% once and since I started to play solo for most of times I can stop trying it after the first 200 pts in every 2nd game.
I had multiple cases (only the last days!) were I lost 0:500 just because my mates dropped in midfight in like 10~15 secs.
I dont want this kind of players anymore! I dont have problems to lose against organized teams but when I have heal signet guards, speed signet thieves and other less viable setups in my team who obviously have no idea what they are doing then I start raging very hard. In my 20 yrs “carrier” of gaming I never had a game which was able to freak me out that much over and over and over and […].
So anet, please, make a limitation of winrate or minimum MMR or smthn and try to separate it better because not even half good players want to have pve daylie farmers in their teams. You better start with disabling daily progress in ranked queues for the first step which makes it less attractive for players which we dont want to have in our teams and which we also dont want to fight against because its boring.

Conversely, experienced players should also be locked out from joining Practice mode just to go farm noobies.
I don’t see a way how your system is gonna be effective OP.
You can play 100 hot join games while being awesome at killing players, being clueless about Conquest.
You can play 100 un-ranked games while being awesome at camping a point, clueless about team rotations / tactics.

But you will have more knowledge about the general mechanics of PvP than you would without those 100 games.

Farm what exactly? Rank points that you get faster from arenas?

Agreed, you’ve gotten 100 games experience, that still doesn’t have to include experience in communication or this concept of teamplay OP talks about.
I don’t consider this a very viable solution to his problem.

Nobody does Practice to farm. What kind of logic is that? High tier teams Practice first before entering TPvP.
Practice Mode is working as intended.
Edited
Furthermore, they will continue to practice until they get their composition worked out. If you can’t handle the heat in Practice mode, do hotjoins. That’s what they’re there for.

The point is good.
Even in PvE you need certain level to get access to some game areas.
I would say, rank 10 is not that high and will let people get to know at least basics before entering ranked mode.
A lot of the bad players already have 1,000’s of games of experience though. Some people don’t care to understand the conquest mode and never will. That guy that goes far point solo and dies over and over again that’s not necessarily a newb in experience just mentality. A lot of people understand one thing when it comes to pvp: pew pew.
No. This will reduce pvp playerbase too much. If you don’t like the players you get, make some friends and queue with them.
“A lot of people understand one thing when it comes to pvp: pew pew.”
True. because that’s what nearly all other PvP MMOS and FPSers are about.
Random n00b goes to Mists. Tries to click ranked arena but can’t. Has to unlock it by buying pass from an NPC. They talk to NPC. NPC says, “You want to go into the Ranked Arena? You must be either braver than me or much more foolikittenhat will be 10 gold for the pass” n00b is forced to think twice about going into ranked arena.
10g is not much but it would be a deterrent against a drunken stumbling noob accidentally face mashing the “compete” button.
And maybe just award someone the ranked arena pass for free if they win X number of unranked games.
Lol “foolikittenhat”
dat aggressive filter
No. This will reduce pvp playerbase too much. If you don’t like the players you get, make some friends and queue with them.
Well no, because 99.9% of the pvp playerbase would probably already meet the requirement.
And it’s not just about having these people on your team, it’s also incredibly boring to face teams with these people. I know a few players who have stopped doing team pvp and only play in custom arenas with and against people they know or in 1v1 arenas because of this.
