I suggest that for all seasons following this one, Ranked PvP be limited to 5-man pre-made teams only. This may sound weird coming from a person who plays PvP 99.9% solo, but this is what I believe is necessary for the future of this game.

In general terms, a game is an activity where you use skill and effort to overcome a challenge which can result in your perceived (or real) victory or loss. Multiplayer games (2 player) are characterized by you (the player) acting as 50% effect. This way, on any given game, players can be content in knowing that even if they lose, they had exactly as much chance to win as the other player.
Currently, PvP is limited to at most, 2 man groups in a 10 man game. This means, at best you are 20% of the effect of the game. This is not a game. Assuming the more common scenario of all players solo-queing, this means that there are 10 players, each playing a game on which they can, at most, be 10% of the effect.
Imagine the hopelessness you would feel if I sat you down to play me in chess, where I played like normal, but you only get to move 1 piece where you want it every 5 of your turns. The rest of your turns, your piece is moved randomly.
This is why so much of the time when a team starts losing in Ranked, at least 1 player will essentially just give up. The worst part about it is that it’s hard to blame them.

Why are 5-man teams any better? You’re still just 10% of the effect! Because, players who agreed to be on the same team as one another cannot reasonably blame another ally for dragging the team down, even if he is not skilled. This team composition was consensual.
My suggestion essentially divides Ranked PvP into two games: The team choosing (and potentially training in Unranked) game, and the competition game. I believe this will greatly enhance the PvP community. Teams will much more frequently battle it out to the bitter end in an effort to not disappoint their friends even if they are losing. Frustration will be more often directed at opponents instead of allies.

This would be the final nail in the coffin for GW2 pvp.

GW2s pvp community isnt big enough to come even remotely close to a full fledged competetive 5v5 ladder.

There just isn’t enough people interested in PvP anymore. It’s become just a casual game mode, and changing the queue to 5-man only won’t be enough to fix it currently. I used to advocate heavily for ranked being for 5-man teams, but it feels like season 6 has hit an all-time low in population. The current system is pretty strange as it is now. It is set up like a 10 man random battleground designed for a casual PvP experience, but then it also has this leaderboard that attempts to rate individual players from random teams.

At this point, I would prefer to have in game tournaments in between the PvP seasons that are for 5-man teams only and give decent rewards. Then if they are able to generate enough interest in PvP through that, they could expand from there. But right now, queue times are longer, matches are more unbalanced, and I’m seeing the same people in matches more often, so it just doesn’t feel like there is a healthy PvP population anymore.

It’s big enough if they remove MMR, 100 people would make 10 games being played at once. If you could pick your perfect team to fight another perfect team there would be no issues.

Yeah, saw your thread where you suggested getting rid of mmr. It is a horrible idea.

What you want is a tournament. That is team pvp that doesn’t require mmr.

Honestly I don’t see why team queue (or dynamic queue) couldn’t be an option alongside current queue system. Give players the choice of a presumably “quick” queue in solo/duo or a bit of wait to queue as trio or more.

From what I’ve observed over the past 6-12mths is player choice slowly being eroded. How we as players queue to play is one example. Lack of balance/diversity limits our build choices. Since Stronghold was removed from Ranked (not saying that is a bad thing), we are left now with only one play format for Ranked. Do you see the pattern here?

Only a couple of weeks into S6 and I’m just about ready to call it quits, in the vain hope S7 might be better.

The most positive possible outcome would be that players would actually start using LFG for pvp. That’s what I would do if they changed to this. It would probably slow down the game play though. You would need to spend time in LFG, then queue up and wait for a match-up. After every match, it is likely that you will have to replace players. But I do like this idea because you could create ideal team comps. And actually kick people that don’t really know the game mode. It’s not that different from fractals, dungeons and raids. The biggest unknown is how a system like this would affect matchmaking. What kind of exploits could there be? Are they game-breaking?

A quick queue option is cool. And by selecting it, you are accepting that you will be at a disadvantage. (So no whining in the forums about it XD)
