Remove the word tournament from sPvP.
it is could be intimating for casual sPvP players.

rename and split into:
1. Random Arenas
2. Team Arenas

5 vs 5 and make it behave like they are in guild wars 1.

- if lost game, go back to lobby
- if won game, keep on going, until lost.
- if won 10 games straight in Random Arenas, fight Team Arena next

etc

with this setup, without the word “tournament” maybe can “encourage” more players to try out non 8 vs 8 hot join games.

Yeah I would agree with this, especially as tournies aren’t actual tournaments, just a single match.

Though in this format, you may as well just scrap hotjoin all together (but leave custom servers for niche game types/guild servers/competition servers) and just replace it with RA. Premades can just go straight to TA.

Therefore rewards would be upped all round for everyone when a pug win’s a RA match and get’s the equivalent of the current tournie chest etc.

hot joins must remain.
hot joins is a true casual sPvP experience.

please don’t take that away.
now imagine if there is no hot join in team fortress 2.

I enjoy 5 vs 5 matches more than 8 vs 8. However the anet staff have already given their answer to this, and to be fair it is a fairly good response. If the match was set at 5 vs 5, because of the casual nature of spvp of people coming and going that if a team lost a player making it 4 vs 5, winning is now heavily in favour of the team with the additional player. Much the same as in tpvp a team of 4 is very unlikely to win versus a team of 5. It is for that reason that numbers can go up to 8 per side.

TA and RA in GW1 hadn’t a matchmaking-system in place with ratings behind it. It was possible to get consecutive wins because of that. Consecutive wins in GW2 are much harder to achieve due to that MMR, which can be compared more to GvG than RA/TA (just because of leaderboard and rating involved).

Based on that it should reward wins against high-level rating teams (compare it with C-Title) rather than consecutive wins.

with small pool of players further fracturing the pvp game will only make balancing worse. having matching algorithm where premades are pref matched against premades and only matched with pugs if no premade is available will achieve same balancing outcome without fracturing player pool.

as for whether you return to lobby or continue i dont care and imo this is insignificant, fine by me either way. but fracturing player pool further, i dont think game can afford it.
