I have a naga hex and unfortunately I will never be able to play games without it now. I find the side buttons really useful but it will take you a few weeks to get used to it. I bind all my utilities and dodge to the 6 buttons on the side and have the top two buttons for call target and target called target.

I will say the top two buttons are a little bit of a pain to use but that is something else I grew used to and if you do get a naga hex it has 3 different sizes of pads you can use in the middle of the buttons, I have the best success not hitting the wrong button using the biggest pad it came with.

If you ever try the naga or any mouse similar with 10+ buttons, you will never be able to figure out how you gamed without it. I have done competitive PvP in other games for a long time without the Naga. After I got used to it (which took about a week or 2) I noticed a difference. The time different between hitting in a sequence like 1, 9 is a huge different because the travel distance is less than an inch for your thumb as opposed doing it with your fingers.

Definitely nothing wrong with normal mouse, I did it forever. But a multi-button mouse is such a quality of life improvement that you didn’t even know you needed.

Who uses numbers above 5 anyway? I’ve bound everything around WASD and works like a charm. 1-5 for weapon skills, Q for heal, R,F,V for utilities, E for elite. Weapon swap and target assist under mouse thumb buttons. Travel distance is less than an inch for every skill.

Before buying mouse like Naga, make sure it’ld go well with your grip. I’m using a variation of claw grip, using three fingers (including thumb) and a slight wrist movements to control the mouse, and I probably wouldn’t be able to switch to a completely diffirent grip style to free the thumb for pressing buttons constantly.

As for mouse, I’ve been using first generation Razer DeathAdder for years and I love it. Right now I’m considering changing to 2013 version, as I need extra mouse for my laptop.

just stop man. i have a naga, they are great, but for GW2 it’s straight up overkill with how few abilities you have in this game.

why would you be doing 1,9 in GW2. theres plenty of places to remap your utilities to your keyboard, you dont even need shift or ctrl modifiers in this game, no need with so few abilities. now rift or wow or other utility heavy games it’s really nice to have. But if you are buying specifically for GW2 i would just buy a more basic 2-3 side button mouse.

Either way OP, try what you like. I love mouses with multiple (10+) buttons, but to each their own.

Edit: Btw, my left hand never has to be taken off of wasd because all of my abilities are mapped to the mouse on my right hand. My score screen, all 10 of my skills, my special ability (steal etc), my dodge roll and my weapon swap. It is extremely useful, even for this game.

See my post above, I edited it before you replied to show you how useful it is. I 100% of the time have full 360 degree range of motion no matter what I am doing. If I am casting skills 1-5 i dont have to take any finger off of a direction key to do it. For melee, although it may seem small, it is a small advantage because of rotating to be behind the character at all times. At some point, to cast 1 of your abilities, you have to take a finger off of a directional key. Super duper small amount of time and not a huge deal, but a disadvantage none-the-less.

Btw, this is an odd debate occurring in a peripheral recommendation thread lol.

I think to put this in light of the OP’s question:

1) This game requires no more than a normal 3-button mouse to be successful at

2) A better mouse will always mean, once your muscle memory learns it, that you will be better than someone without one, but this game’s noticeable advantage for such a thing is significantly less than some other MMOs due to the sheer reduction and focus of the abilities of the moves available

I have no idea why people use nagas or other mouses with so many buttons in gw2. There are 5 weapon skills 1 healing 3 utilities, and 2 more (f1 and elite).

So you can reach weapon skills easily with your left hand while still using wasd. So you need 5 more buttons – I have bound my qercv for that, even if my mouse has additional 4 buttons I use only keyboard.

The only profession that in my opinion should/can use binds on a mouse is an elementalist since you have to reach F1-F4 while still combining 1-5, that is not really comfortable to do.

So to get back on topic, in my opinion – don’t buy expensive “pro” player mouses since they are only good because the marketing says so, a simple mouse is good enough for gw2 combat.

It’s not “better” than an average mouse as is, but the side-buttons can be really useful once you get used to them. Instead of reaching for 6, for example, I just tilt my right thumb. Also ensures that my hands never leave WASD.

When you use a mouse with extra buttons it means you have to move your left hand less to hit skills and can move with more control. A mouse with more than three buttons isn’t necessary but I would argue it is MORE important in guild wars 2 than in other games because of the ability to physically dodge abilities so you get more out of not having to take your hands off the WASD keys to move.

The OP is specifically looking for mouse recommendations which means they are willing to spend more than $10 on whatever they can find or they wouldn’t be asking. Dropping $70 on a nice piece of computer equipment isn’t much compared to how much people spend on other parts of their computers.

I disagree about the Naga. I consider it a gimmicky abomination. Your thumb speed and precision cannot compare to that of the rest of your fingers. As such, it’s better to assign it to simple tasks, like hitting a single button or two.

I use a Logitech G9X with two thumb buttons, one bound to CTRL and one bound to my Mumble key. I use CTRL as my primary modifier, RDFG for movement, and my pinky to access almost all of my abilities (along with a few abilities that use the CTRL modifier). With this setup, I also do not need to remove my fingers from the movement keys, but I also never fat finger (or thumb) an ability.

As Payneful said, your mouse does not really matter in this game. There are very few circumstances in which you need pixel-precision, unlike an FPS or competitive RTS. So, I would not lose sleep over the decision or spend too much money relative to your comfort level.

Try dodging left and right while activating multiple skills. “Noob” skill chain aside I can keep my fingers on A and D dodging that ranger and frenzy, bull’s charge, hundred blades without having to move my hands you are probably a better player than I am but I couldn’t do that with just my keyboard and a 3 button mouse… oh and tell every console video game player ever their thumb cannot be fast or precise enough to hit buttons.

Imagine typing a paper with your thumbs, instead of your fingers, or playing piano or guitar. By human evolutionary design, it’s sub-optimal. Don’t blame me, blame the universe.

As I tried to explain, I never have to sacrifice movement to hit abilities either, only I outsource most of my ability presses to my pinky — lots of keys for that finger if you shift your movement key and use a single thumb button as a modifier.

Edit: Also, I don’t consider console gamers to be the end-all of control schemes. Yes, they can get by, but go spend some time watching some Black Ops 2 pro console streams on Twitch.tv and then watch TBNR Frag (PC pro pubber) and see if you still think the console argument holds any weight.

Apologies if my opinion of the Naga sounds harsh, but I explained why I consider that mouse to be a gimmicky abomination. The question in the thread title was directed to “tPvP” players, so I assume he isn’t necessarily looking for a competent mouse for casual players (the Naga), but actually wanted to know what players who compete were using and why.

(I don’t mean to suggest that competitive players can’t or don’t use the Naga, but I consider it entirely unnecessary for this game or any game for that matter.)

I am just curious as to how much time you have spent using a mouse like the naga. you seem to have a lot of knowledge about how useless it is and I’m going to assume that you used 1 for a while and did not like it or should I assume what is probably true and that you’ve never even touched it and your super brain decided that it was useless because your super brain told you so? I’ve used a normal 3 button mouse for 95% of my going life, I’ve switched to this mouse and I’ll never look back because of the actual benefits and advantage (however small).

the only thing i have bound to my naga is dodge and weapon swap – and can easily strafe, spin, circle, face whatever while using any of my 1-5 abilities and utilities (zxcvb). If you cant continue moving while hitting any of those keys you likely are just bad with a keyboard, fat fingers, lack of dexterity or a combination of the 3.

also console games use thumb controls because there is no other way to do it and still allow your other fingers to be free.

It’s just so awkward trying to strafe right, for example, and trying to hit the E,R,F, etc.. hotkeys.
Or, people ask me if its annoying to spam my 1 as my autoattack option is turned off. I imagine it would be if you were using the keyboard as “1” would mean the inability to strafe left.
I can’t believe I ever gamed without one.

I have never used a Naga. If I did, I would bind modifiers to the thumb buttons and a few one-off type abilities or uses, like Sprawl does. All in all, I would question whether the “benefits and advantages (however small)” justified the additional costs (in money) of the mouse. You evidently think it does. My point is that Payne’s $15 Wal-mart mouse is more than sufficient for all practical purposes.

Frankly, my super brain comes in handy in a lot of situations, but I did not even need it to analyze this one. It’s fairly straightorward: Because of how we evolved from monkeys (or how God created us like 12 minutes ago, depending on your viewpoint), thumb buttons are overrated as one’s primary means for hitting abilities. Supplement, fine, but if you are using a Naga to bind 6-10, then maybe you should consider an alternate control scheme.

Edit: I would also add to Jumper’s point above that the Naga Hex is a much better design than the original Naga. In fact, I would not even call it an abomination. Nonetheless, the basic premise remains — fingers > thumbs for key presses. Shift your movement keys on the keyboard and learn to use your pinky. Again, you get the benefit of complete freedom of movement while using abilities and the ability to use fingers instead of thumbs.

Logitech G9x or go home tbh. best bang for the buck. you get weights, durability, huge dpi, 9 buttons for $100.

Razer is complete garbage. it’s cheap and breaks in less than a year. while my Death Adder felt great under the palm, it broke after 6 months of moderate use. Naga’s record isnt any better.

My record with Razer mice is great. My record with Razer keyboards however.

The mice are top-notch, absolutely perfect. You need to absolutely WANT to break it, for it to break.

BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON’T EVER USE THEIR KEYBOARDS

I’m not a fan of having people waste money on mice with 300 buttons on it, but I have no idea how you can come to the conclusion that these mice are suboptimal because if you only use your thumbs to type, play piano, or play guitar it will be harder. There’s absolutely no connection there.

Also, fps on a controller is worse than a mouse and keyboard because the mouse will give you so much more control that a controller would. It’s not an issue between thumb vs fingers, it’s an issue between thumb vs your wrist/arm.

But you are right about these mice being a waste of money. It’s not really needed.

Cause I ain’t perfect, I never said I was.
But now they’re hating cause a brotha finally got some buzz

Does your ‘moderate use’ mean you throw it every time you get killed? I can’t think of any other way it could break in 6 months. I’ve had the same Death Adder even since it was first released and used it heavily for years, including traveling with it every couple weeks. Still works perfectly.

Well, guess I got lucky and got one put together quite well. Or you got unlucky. Depends on what’s the factory standard :P

thing is if you look at online reviews, many share my gripes about Razer products, especially the Naga. and compare that to the G9X (or Logitech products in general), which has 5/5 on newegg after 800 user reviews. if you have a Razer product that last for more than a year, then youre lucky.
