THIS POST IS 4 MONTHS OLD. Read the recent posts beforehand, and then laugh at this one.
After much talk with Ender and Cast yesterday night (few hours), I decided to compile a brief history of Ellusive’s team history through my perspective. Now, before I go into this any further, I am going to mention that the purpose of this thread is to not create e-drama, but instead state some background for teams in the finals of ToG, explain newer teams the progression of making a team and getting into the competitive scene, and to clear up the air of a few rumors regarding the disbanding of Ellusive (a ToL/ToG team you probably never heard of). I will maintain a neutral tone, and merely say what I thought happened.
Some of you know me and some you don’t. I play thief. But that doesn’t matter. Also what doesn’t matter if my opinion is valid to you or not…I’m just speaking my thoughts. It’s something that people have been encouraging me to do recently.
This will probably be the most serious and heartfelt thread I will ever make in these forums. I don’t post much here. I will probably be trolled, get hated by a lot of the obvious culprits, and asked why anyone should care. People will accuse me of thinking that the only reason I’m making this thread is to gain public attention and because “I think I’m good, but in reality I’m bad”. I get that statement often. Even so, at this point I see more benefit that this thread will do than the bad. I want to tell you a story of getting way too involved with the game.
Pre-ToL 1 (somewhere around February?)
I had been mostly playing with pugs for the past year and a half, but a lot of prominent members in the NA community were saying that I should really/deserved to get a team. I was playing for fun, but was intrigued by how much I was improving at thief. I was asked by Good Fights to be their thief at the time, and I agreed. However, it was a last minute decision by Magic Toker to come back into the game and thus, I was teamless.
One day, I decided to form a team with Ender who had played numerous pugs with me at that time. Inevitably, we also picked up Cast, who was a very good friend of Ender. Needing 2 more players, we decided to have Physicks and Ozie join the team, as we both liked them as people and knew they were solid players. Ender unfortunately chose the team name as Ellusive (which is still something I am WTF at even today…like what kinda team name is that).
Anyways, we started playing together more often and often with other friends of ours, and saw ourselves improve with time. We started getting to know eachother and had many fun nights/convos where we just joked around or attempted to play our best in team que. We got along really well from my perspective. You see, Ozie and I were Canadian, Physicks and I were both studying medical related things, and Ender, Cast, and I could literally talk about anything that came up. The game was just a blast at that time.
Team: Physicks (engi), Ozie (guard), Cast (engi), Aeroxe (thief), Ender (mesmer)
(edited by Aeroxe.8140)
If I were to give any advice to any new teams, it would be that the aforementioned team mentality is the most ideal. You want to improve as a team, but most of all you want to play with people you like, not rage, have fun, and not be afraid to lose. In this way, you avoid breakups and over a long period of time get really good at the game as a team and individually.
ToL1
By the time ToL1 rolled around, Ellusive was arguably one of the stronger teams in the NA community. This was Ellusive’s prime. The only teams we feared were Apex Prime, Outplayed, and Team Lonely(caed and people), and honestly good fights at the time wasn’t a problem indicated by past scrims. Sadly, our bracket consisted of fighting Apex, which was our weakest matchup. We ended up getting face rolled. We still ended up 4-8th.
Post ToL1, Pre ToL2
The team took a small hiatus at this point. Final exams were coming up in college, and people had summer plans/irl duties. For myself, I was preparing to take my MCAT in August, and was in the midst of purchasing textbooks and a prep course. Cast had left the team at this point, feeling that competitive tPvP wasn’t as fun as it was before. In one mistpedia, I made a random pug that consisted of bobloblaw, whom I thought fit as a character to join the team. We started to play with bob more often, and soon enough, he joined the team.
Team: Physicks (engi), Ozie (guard), Bob (Warrior), Aeroxe (thief), Ender (mesmer)
ToL2
This is probably when a lot of people’s questions will be answered, and my perspective will come into light. At the time of ToL2 and during the summer, I was quite swamped with preparing for the MCAT, dealing with some family issues, and a part-time job. My routine schedule was waking up at around 8am, studying at the library from 9am-5pm, going to a prep course from 6pm-9pm, and playing the game from 10pm-11:30pm. I didn’t have the time to cook proper food or interact with irl friends much, and thus I lost around 20 pounds, became mildly depressed, and became too dependent on interacting with the people I knew online. I was still committed to the game, even though I knew that subconsciously I should have taken a break and then came back after the MCAT. Maybe I could’ve used that time to workout, or at least talk to irl friends online. However, a part of me also says that I needed the game to take my mind off studying and the real world for at least a little bit.
Over the summer, people got better, but I felt like I got worse. I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the community and still maintain my irl schedule for the MCAT. We decided to have Karina as our sub, as we often played with her in team ques. We also deemed Mesmer to be inviable in our composition and replaced Ozie with Marvin as Ozie had quit the game temporarily.
Team: Physicks (engi), Marvin (guard), Bob (Warrior), Aeroxe (thief), Ender (engi). Sub: Karina (necro)
The summer was also a turning point for Ender, whom he admits himself. Ender had become too serious about the game, and often raged and called people kitteners in team que. In general, Ender had become a little kitten. We were still apt to play together still, but we had little practice and the team dynamic just wasn’t there like it was back in ToL 1 where everyone got along just fine. Teamspeak was often riddled with people blaming eachother (mostly Ender) and frustration at people not being more active, instead of small talk about real life or comedy.
In essence, this was the “corruption” of Ellusive.
To put it simply, Ellusive didn’t even qualify for the finals. We got crushed by Straight Outta Columbia, which was a team put together by Kizos and Darth. This was really unexpected by a lot of people, and often I get a lot of questions pertaining as to how we lost. In my perspective, I did contribute to the throwing of the games, given my physical condition. I was too stressed with trying to keep up with my MCAT and the game at the same time. However, I didn’t have the heart to tell anyone, as that is really not a valid excuse for poor play on my part. Ellusive disbanded entirely.
Post-ToL2, ToG, Present
I was approached by a couple of teams to play thief for them, and I always tentatively gave out a “maybe” answer. In the back of mind, I knew I still wanted to play with members of Ellusive, as I had committed half a year to the team, and got to know/liked the players quite well. However, the team reformed with Avitori instead of myself, and eventually the team became “Hashtag Believe”.
Hashtag Believe: Necitor (ele), Bob (ele), Karina (necro), Physicks (engi), Avitori (thief). Sub: Ender (engi)
As a result, I decided to play with my long-time friend Kizos, and our team currently consists of:
Collateral Damage: Darth (engi), Aeroxe (thief), CmC (ele), Kizos (Ranger), Marvin (engi)
Both Collateral Damage and Hastag Believe will be playing in the finals of ToG.
Conclusion
I sometimes receive questions from people like: Why did Ellusive disband? Did Aeroxe really throw those games? Why did Ender become so serious/a little kitten in the game? Does Aeroxe die too much? Did Karina lose every single 1v1 in ToG? Why didn’t the team reform with Aeroxe and Ender? Was I manipulated and a scapegoat?
(edited by Aeroxe.8140)
The short answer to these questions is all “maybe” and “it doesn’t matter”. Am I upset that I’m no longer able to play with a team I liked? Yeah, I would be lying to say I wasn’t disappointed at not being able to continue half a year of commitment. Would I ever reform Ellusive? Probably not. Do I think I’m good? Not as good as before, and even then I wasn’t good, but still I don’t think I’m as terrible as a lot of people say behind my back. Do I hate anyone from my previous team? No, I still like them, but I don’t think they like me very much.
Even after the summer, I still failed my MCAT. I know for a fact however, that was not because of guild wars 2. I did extremely well in sciences, but failed in verbal reasoning.
What to get from all this is that the core of a team and their longevity are people’s relationships with eachother. Sure, you can try to form a team with people you don’t like who are indeed very skilled, but it won’t last long. Eventually you will tire yourself out from dealing with others. For example, once Ender became a little kitten in the summer and a ton of other drama, the team fell apart. Good Fights has lasted a long time because the players within the team like eachother and get along well.
If you are trying to form a team, the best way would be getting to know someone that seems decent in solo que, and eventually pugging teampug every night or so. It is crucial that you like the person, and eventually you will have a circle of friends that you play with every now and then. Eventually, a team will form, get better, play in mistpedias, and achieve a lot of success in ToL and ToG. That’s how almost every team is formed. The “top-tier” is really just a group of friends that play with eachother, or people that have played the infamous “NA Social Game”.
The biggest thing to get from all of this is that GW2 is just a game. It’s not that serious. Teams form, breakup, and form again. It’s the natural process of a competitive community. For example, I was upset that my team brokeup because I had put so much effort into it…not because I didn’t like the breakup itself. Real life comes first, and that is something I should’ve understood more during the summer. Even if you make a team, do not take things too seriously. Give constructive criticism, but understand that again, it is just a game. Do not rage, and have fun.
Anyways, I hope you guys watch both Hashtag Believe and Collateral Damage in ToG in the finals. I love you all, and hope to see you in the mists.
Sincerely,
Aeroxe

That’s a good story with a strong resolve
It should be stickied for the spvp section of this forum

sigh this is too true. sharks started as me and two friends who did well in trioqs and now its garbage edrama that will probably disband after ToG finals. i wish lord and rantev could come back and we could reform with new players or something.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wpVPa9PRBgo 100od kizos in tol2 starting at 21:30 if anyone is wondering
I read it all. I was enlightening. I’d like more top players to share their stories.
What i’ve noticed about the “top tier” gaming community is that most people will only like you so long as you perform well. I mean look at some of the “top” players we have. Downright toxic, rude children who irl should be kittenslapped, but people will enjoy playing with them because they are good players. I’m like you in that I would rather play with people who act mature and want to have fun.
Anyway, no one hates you, you’re one of the nicer people in the community, and you’re not a bad player. Personally I think you could improve with staying alive, but you play what is imo the hardest, and least forgiving build in the meta. So from one thief to another, don’t be so h a r d (why is this censored? lol) on yourself. _ Just have fun_ and stop giving a kitten about what people think

This was what I trying to avoid, in honesty. I don’t really care what people think, as long as it doesn’t interfere with me interacting with the community. I’m not looking for sympathy. The whole goal of the thread was to illustrate the point that a good team is one that will have a good team dynamic, shine some light on some rumours, share some background on ToG finalist teams, and establish the progression from being a solo que hero to a team player in mistpedia. The tournies recently have been very dry.
I’m not being too “hard” on myself. I’m just sharing my thoughts, which is the truth from my perspective.

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!
Who could hate Aeroxe! One of the thuper frandliest players around!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
To be honest, Aeroxe has one of the chillest personalities while having a positive mentality. I really don’t mind who I play with, but if i’m feeling a negative vibe then that is where I have second thoughts. Back to what this thread is about, i’ll agree a good team has synergy, comfortable with each other, and has played for a while knowing what every team member is capable of. The community i’ll agree is very vicious and can be toxic, but Aeroxe is one of the nicest guys out there. People who often get to the “top” will often forget where they came from, how they started off, and what their roots were. They shaft that with a high ego, and thus leads to another attitude and different perspective of who they really are. There a few who are actually good while maintaining their personality. How many haters does it take to change a light bulb? None. They fear change, even if it can make the world a brighter place.

Now that I read over this thread I created, I feel that this thread was unnecessary. The idea of creating the thread came to me when I was reminiscing with cast and ender the other night, and that inspiration was powerful enough to have me write 2000 words on it. It’s quite contradictory, to be honest, to write all this after I say this is just a game.
Oh well I might as well keep going while I’m ahead. Call me immature…IDGAF let’s do this.
I’m not trying to play the hero, but when I read it I can see how it may turn off some people (especially people at the high tier, who are probably thinking: “Who is Aeroxe to tell this story, when the story of more prominent members in the community should be posted instead” or “Ha Aeroxe thinks he is so special”). I think I’m trying to let people know how to enjoy this game a bit more, even if I can at least do a little. Now why would I do that? Kindness is not an acceptable answer, which is again even more unacceptable to those at the high tier. It’s because I love this game. I feel strongly about it, and am going to express my thoughts on it.
In anycase I’m actually going to share more of my thoughts on the “toxicness” of the community. Actually, oeggs and I had a long chat about this a month ago or so, and we both came to the conclusion that yes, people are toxic, but that is just because of how the game is structured and not the community itself. It’s a competitive team-based game, and people want to win. Of course people are going to want who they think are the best players. Of course then there is going to be drama, because people will have different opinions of who is good and who is not. Of course then people are going to judge people on skill, rather than character, and treat everyone else as trash. You also need to take into account people’s sensitivities to toxicness.
Therefore, it’s really hard for anybody to get into the PvP community because they are just treated as “trash”. This classification of people further necessitates my thread’s primary purpose of how to get a team together.
Also, I think I’m making the “top-tier” players sound very evil or something. They aren’t. A lot of the top tier players are nice, and are normal people just having fun in this game.
(edited by Aeroxe.8140)
This is kind of my fault. I should have said yes when some of you asked me to sub for Karina.
let’s keep the shots out of the thread lol. Constructive criticism and discussion. Also I think we should stay on the topic of how to form a team in the NA community.
You’re a nice guy Aeroxe. Hope to see you around more, and yeah play the game for fun m8.
Ive been inspired… It is time my tale be told
To be honest I didn’t fully read this wall-of-text, but I’m getting a hint of a general thruline.
Above all, you don’t trash talk your teammates. If you want to take the game seriously, then you have to not act like a child when things go wrong. If a teammate is under-preforming, you put them on the “bench” and work with them in the spare time. Of course, this all requires your guildies to not act like children. Instead of trash talking the players who join the team and kicking them, you work with them.
The moment anyone trash talks their teammate is the moment they get put up on the proverbial chopping block, imo. Above all, team synergy is priority.
Thanks for the read, Aeroxe. I read through this yesterday on my phone and didn’t have a chance to reply.
As you mention in your post, building a team isn’t just about mechanical skill or game knowledge – it’s also about personality. There are a lot of people that I’ve played with in the past that were very gifted players, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out on a personal level, and really, that’s OK. Ultimately, finding people you enjoy playing with and working towards a common goal is much more satisfying and rewarding than trying to shoehorn a group of individuals together and hoping for the best.
Up until recently there hasn’t been a lot of incentive for top-tier teams to stick together after an event such as ToL/ToG, but hopefully now as we have multiple planned LAN events through the next year, teams can start playing the long game, learning to grow together as a team rather than look for replacements at the first sign of adversity.
Anyways, good luck in the finals, Aeroxe. Maybe I’ll see you in Beijing.

Now that’s cool. I didn’t hear about that. Good to hear

Yep. China is just the first stop. We’ll also be hosting events in NA and EU.
DO U HAVE TO BE 18????
yes
I think you need to update this. WHAT HAPPENED? Give us the details.

This goes both ways though. Part of having a competitive team is discussing what went wrong when you lost so it doesn’t happen again. Some people you can’t say boo too or they get all bent out of shape. I would never trash talk a team-mate. I would say to him though x was a mistake it really hurt us that match why did you do it here is why I think its wrong what you should do next time. You would be surprised how bent out of shape people get over simple stuff like that.
I tried…seriously!
I heard about the recent break up! Please keep the community informed so we can all learn not to play with 15 year-olds!
I heard about the recent break up! Please keep the community informed so we can all learn not to play with 15 year-olds!
I believe three of them were 17*.
people dont realize this is a 4 month thread.
well i dont know if theyll hate me for spilling the beans a little but:
word is ender quit and then joined a team with karina and edison.
also zeromis apparently quit once ender did. Hord told me he’d join my team but tbh Im not sure if hes dead set on that since zeromis and aeroxe might make a new team without olrun
The team was basically just a mixed bag of people who got kicked from teams, too young, or were disliked by the community. It was kind of destined to breakup in consideration of that. Sure the team’s performance may have been decent, but sometimes the team dynamic isn’t there. It’s hard to pinpoint, and I can point fingers at age differences, but I feel that it’s more than just that.
Looking back, this post was sort of an embarrassment and stupid, but you know I was going through some tough times irl and wasn’t really mentally sound. Of course I think this post was silly, but it’s in the past. I don’t regret writing it, but it’s not one of my favourite posts out there haha.
Anyways, Ellusive members will be going their separate ways. Hope you can cheer for all of us in future tournies.
(edited by Aeroxe.8140)
Thanks for the inspiring story I enjoyed it
Ok i’ll take full responsibility for the breakup the first time, second time it wasn’t all me, and it was a lot less drama
I admit it…it was me who deflated the team….I am, the Locker Room Guy
