So my teammate’s computer crashed right during a ranked match setup.
I was in TS with him; he even timed out of there. We fought 4v5 for several minutes.
He came back after he had already passed the threshhold for a desertion, helped us win the match, and still lost a pip. This just happened to be the match that would have gotten him into Sapphire.

Is there really any reason to treat a player like this in this circumstance? He did exactly what he should have—restarted his machine, came back as quickly as possible, and jumped back into the fight.

Because Anet has no way of knowing if its by accident or if its deliberate and also most often if its 4v5 then the 4 person team will likely lose and anet doesnt want to punish the 4 players (the ones that are not in his party) . Those team mates will not lose a pip even if they lost the match.

None of that really applies to this fact pattern though. He came back (which makes no sense if it’s a deliberate desertion) and we won the match. A player should never lose a pip if their team wins a match and they’re in the match and participating (he killed the lord, so he would have earned personal score) when it ends.

It was the length of time he was out of the match. Kudos that you guys won. Means you outmatched the other team by a lot. But generally a DC of that length of time means a loss for the 4 person team. Maybe ANETS thinking is that the win was based on the fact the other 4 players were great and since he was out of the match for a few min his contribution was not the deciding factor.
