Some food for thought:

As the underdog in a close match (let’s say you lose 400/450 to 500 against an enemy stack), you will gain 2 ladder points. If you look at the matchmaking algorythm, your MMR won’t increase if you’re losing, even if its close. Even if you do gain a little MMR, you could just buy a new account with a clean slate. It would take forever for the game to realize your team isn’t actually the “underdog”

So.. if you play a hundred games, and lose every game 450 to 500 on purpose, will you be at 200 points?
If so, is it possible to become rank 1 on the leaderboard whilst maintaining a complete 0% winrate?

It’s absolutely possible. This new implementation is extraordinarily buggy and exploitable.

I for one am not concerned with the leaderboard. It rewards time spent in game over player performance.

On the other hand, a dev confirmed that, assuming you’re only worried about your win rate, you could leave every losing game before the timer and it won’t count. You can literally manipulate the system to keep a 100% win rate.

Typical Anet. They refuse to implement test servers, opting to roll out untested, unfinished, broken changes to systems that were working decently, despite being flawed.

It sincerely seems like Anet is trying to drive players away from the game. Oh well, I’ll ride it out as long as I am still having a little bit of fun. There will always be freeshards in the future.

Completely possible, many people have already theorycrafted this strategy, and it looks to be extremely viable if someone is twisted enough to:

  • Have starter or very bad MMR.
  • Play other low MMR people.
  • Be a 5 man premade that can easily control the results of the match, or just be genuinely be at a starter level of skill.
  • Get 400 points for your team and then let the enemy take everything over, and win the game.

Rinse and repeat, your MMR will not increase, you face few premades to stomp you, 500-0, if you’re a solo/beginner player.

Using this strategy you can avoid the extreme reduction of ladder point generation that MMR gives solo queuers, due to attracting constant premade enemies.

I just really hate ladder points. Please Arenanet, come to your senses and have a leaderboard that reflects rating.

Yes perfectly true. IMO if a group of 5, or even 1 person wan’t to pay that cash for a restart just for a mini llama, there is other issues at hand and doctors for help.

would repeatedly leaving matches lower your MMR or just your ladder points ?

Just ladder points. If you are not there at the end of the match you cannot win or loose and therefore, MMR not effected besides -3 pts on LB’s. If you come back during match and win/ lose, then your MMR will be affected accordingly; but still -3 on LB.

Well staying there a full match is time consuming, joining and leaving would be faster.

this deserves a petition, but sadly she doesn’t even recognize these ladderboards as a way to obtain her affections anymore.

Yep. All concerns are sound.

This is absolutely why MMR and ladder need to be one and the same (or just eliminate MMR altogether and have ladder ranking replace MMR in matchmaking). Win probability should be based on your ladder rank. Therefore, higher ladder rank, higher win probability. Vice versa would occur for a low rank (it should be intuitive and logical). Because unranked matches exist now, you can try your new professions there.

You can even tank your MMR but keep your ladder ranking if you just lose every match 400-500.
