The History of Anet and PvP
Opportunity cost.
Why spend time on GvG when you can build a shopping mall and lure a bunch of WoW players in that can play dress up and not have to tank or heal anymore?
The history of Anet and PvP reminds me of a person. He was a cute kid when he was little, smart, and paid attention in school, got good grades. But some things went wrong down the trajectory towards adulthood and now he has a beergut, neckbeard, smells faintly of alcohol and has questionable political beliefs. He dropped out of college, too.
He’s didn’t even become a “bad” person. It’s not something that he could “work on” — he just grew up into the person he is now, for better or worse, and he is happy with his menial job and his life consisting of frozen dinners and TV. And he doesn’t do drugs or is unemployed, you know? It’s not as bad as it could be.
What I’m trying to say, the honeymoon of great PvP that we had 2005-2009 was ultimately just a phase in ANet’s life. It’s futile to look back on this and tell the ANet of now: Look, you were so cute in this photograph! You had such good grades in junior high school!
because just like that person can’t become a cute kid again no matter how hard we wish, ANet won’t become a PvP heavyweight again. And if we can’t accept the beergut-sporting ANet of now, we better just move on.

So Anet is basically the guy who peaked in high school? I like it.
GW2 is an infuriating mix of brilliance, mediocrity and missed opportunities. It has one of the best if not the best MMO combat system working in its favor. Many of the people who have stuck around since launch do so because the combat is just so much better than what the competition is offering. Sadly the PvP infrastructure has never been up to snuff, and it became obvious about 2 months into live that Anet’s development priorities are 95% focused on more lucrative things, such as PVE dress-up.
From the outside, it appears as if the devs really flounder at building a viable earnings model for PvP, and since they can’t figure out how to reliably monetize it, PvP gets next to no development time. Hence no GvG for us. #Sadface.

Filthy casual, 6k sPvP games
I have to agree that pvp is not a focus when obvious imbalances exist such as highly effective passive damage and passive builds. When cleave damage is so strong that effective single target damage builds are on the edge of extinction that should raise some red flags. There’s more than these couple mentions to discuss.
Norn Guardian – Aurora Lustyr (Lv 80)
Mia A Shadows Glow – Human Thief (Lv 80)
completely agree with this thread… spvp is anything but pvp… you get more points awarded for capping shrines than killing players = avoid fights and keep capping. If I want my team to win, then I take lots of invisibility and avoid fighting anyone that is not on a shrine… wtf? Is this pvp?
They took the worst pvp game in GW1 – and made it the no.1 pvp game in GW2… seriously?
Acid Bath Babies Go Plop Plop [FizZ]
i’ve been playing MMOs for over a decade now and i’ve pretty much tried them all.
and i can honestly say that GW1’s PVP was one of the most balanced and fun of them all.
(i played GW from day 1 right up until GW2 was released, 3 accounts, everything completed, black widow spider, rainbow phoenix, HoM, FoW armour, ectos by the hundreds. fantastic game!)
its night and day in comparison to GW2 which is without doubt one of the least balanced, least updated and least varying PVPs i have ever played.
that said the combat mechanics in GW2 are incredible, which just makes it so much worse since i can’t move on to a different game with better pvp since the combat mechanics just feel so outdated in those games.
its like a trap, the combat mechanics in GW2 will ruin all other MMOs for you, but the gameplay itself is hideously unbalanced and unsupported so you’ll hardly want to play.
what happened Anet?…what happened.

Agree with everything. But it would take too much work to actually restructure the whole game, if we look at the little work they did in 2 years. I suggest to quit the game like I and many others did and wait for GW3.
With the current development and the company behind it, this game has absolutely no future PvP-wise.

This.
The most vital period for a company to develop on part of a game is when the active community is largest. Considering that we are now very far from that active peak it is illogical to think that they would begin dedicating more resources to sPvP than they previously did.
Thanks for the support comrads!
