The Mesmer - too powerful?
yeah maybe if they give Mesmer Warrior’s animations… that would fix the problem for you?
I think it is more than animations. It’s a fascinating class design.
Mesmer was mostly balanced after the PU/mantra nerf but before HoT. I think mirror blade needs its bounce back per minimum.
While I doubt that real teams would run it, save for maybe ZCP, I think condi mea could be an okay choice in fun-tier. The condi output is quite good, even if it’s not enough general utility to merit it over something else.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
You make it sound like mesmer has always been a problem in top level play, but when has mesmer been consistently in all the top teams apart from this current bunker meta and the brief period when mantras were broken? I would say that mesmer has mostly struggled to be viable in top teams…
I think the problem was in the day-to-day matches, where very-skilled players could use the Mesmer to just dominate.

Pretty sure the same ‘very-skilled players’ could use any meta class to dominate…
No. I think there is something about the Mesmer’s skillset that makes it hard to balance. I think in the hands of a very skilled player who deeply “gets” the class, the effectiveness is exponential.

I’d still like to see that exponential effectivennes. AFAIK the only one who truly made mesmer competitive was Helseth. And, as he said, he’s the one who got the skills and carried mesmer through top league, not the other way around.
The mythical “high ceiling” of mesmer is just a way to say: put twice as much effort in the class for half as much reward gotten by any other and it’s not worth it unless you’re truly masochist.
i would like to see a shatter build able to compete with thief :Q_
btw happy the aoeinvulneromancer has gone.

Mesmer is just the class new and/or bad players always complain about because of how the class is played not because its “op”
It relys on tricking your opponent and locking them down, using a bunch of clones while simultaneously going invisible and popping invulnerabilies inbetween with all the shatters and animations, it can be really disorienting to someone that doesnt know what to look out for or how the class works

Especially when you make a full premade with HUGE norn all clothed the same with similar name before the chaos armor visual nerf.
You want a kittening screen cluster? It couldn’t get worst.
Been long since i was decapped or did not decap a point against anyone while 1v1 on my condi-permablock-shatter Mesmer build that most people bashed about on these forums. Yet there were quite a few thankful peeps who were easily carried to diamond/legendary using this and sent their regards through in game ~
Bunker mesmer was very strong in competitive-organized plays in certain team-comps. I have always decapped every bunker mesmer within 10 seconds, and most likely – killed them after. I disliked this meta, never played bunker one and im happy for the nerfs mesmers are getting.
In fact, all anet are going to do is just buffing my build in all ways regarding scepter changes and amulet changes overall.
I am very thankful and happy for this. ~ Mesmer is strong, too many short-minded people playing it.

Mesmer is definitely strong, always has been. The problem is, so is thief.
For years mesmer wasnt used in meta comps simply because of the existence of the thief, they both share a similar role, however the thief had always been a hard counter to mesmer. People would rather take thief as their +1 decap roamer because the other team is probably running one too so if you run mesmer they have to be babysat to prevent the thief from insta downing them.
The specialization patch finally made thieves and mesmers pretty even so mesmer actually started seeing more play, but the HOT patch changed that state of balance.
This upcoming season mesmers are getting a lot of nerfs while thief is receiving a lot of buffs, mesmers are justifiably worried they will get kicked to the curb again like they were the first 2 and a half years

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say because it’s the profession with the most access to invulnerability and reflects, decent stealth up-time, high in-combat mobility and one of the lowest cooldown heals.
Then ANet got the bright idea to give this class with the most access to reflects and invulnerability a shield.
All professions are hard to play in their own way. Mesmer has it’s own skill ceiling just like every other profession but it’s a lot easier to break it because of how powerful it’s defensive skills are. If you’re good at reading animations from your opponents, you can basically either go out of range, block, reflect or go completely invulnerable any time you’re about to get hurt.
