The Real problem with Thief Class
What PvP rank are you?
Another QQ thread of the same, play the class then maybe you can learn on how to counter.

No man, read the title, this time it’s the real problem we’re talking about !
Another thief protecting his class
What PvP rank are you?
I’m rank 30 play a thief condition spec myself and there is nothing i haven’t encountered on my thief that I can’t kill in under 10 seconds. The best bunker guardian with awesome condition removal will crumble before me. I get a 4 second daze from my steal and switch to my pistol’s vs bunkers and burn them down by mixing blind, bleed, and high unload spike dmg while timing my daze with the stolen over the top insane daze for 4 seconds.
My question to you is how little common sense can you have to not realize when your playing something set to monkey easy mode in pvp?
Have you ever won a tournament in another game for real life cash?
Have you ever been ranked by game pro as one of the best pvpers in a game?
Have you come in .01% in the ranking system of any pvp game with over 10 million players?
Because if you have you would never embaress yourself by defending a class this overpowered.
No one is ‘protecting’ anything. Learn how to play before calling things OP.

You must not fight very many guardians if they can’ t last 10 seconds against you, just because you enjoy stomping noobs in sPvP, does NOT mean they are OP.
I’ve seen classes that can get away from just about anything.
I’ve seen classes run faster than anything.
I’ve seen classes 1-2 shot people.
Just never seen a class in a game that could do all of these at the same time.
When you can address this factual statement with something other than learn to play I’ll listen to your opinion, I’ll respond with logical discourse, and not discount you as a addle brained pedantic fanboy with no skill in pvp.

oh look another thread where “elite” players tell everyone game is balanced while the player base continues to dwindle
its NOT dwindling the thiefs say its not so it must be true! just like u need to ltp not to get 3 shotted
The head designer obviously plays this class and is totally out of touch with reality, because I’ve never seen a class this insanely over the top in any game.
I’ve seen classes that can get away from just about anything.
I’ve seen classes run faster than anything.
I’ve seen classes 1-2 shot people.
Just never seen a class in a game that could do all of these at the same time, and a design team absolutely unwilling to address the fact that it’s this out of control. So lets all stop pretending this is a mistake or balancing issue when we all know exactly what’s going on here, blatant favoritism towards a guys preffered class.
Most players call the game Thief Wars you really gonna tank your own game pvp wise to keep your class on easy mode pvp.
just do like most pvpers do and move on LOL has given me a whole new appreciation for pvp

show us a video of ur rank and how u deal with thiefs please mister l2p

Pistols are actually the best weapon in the game to collapse the defense of bunkers. Caltrops mixed with trait caltrops, plus sneak attack, vital shot and unload dmg with descent atk power and crit % and timed daze and blind= a win.
No bunker can remove conditions, survive spike dmg, and withstand well timed dazes and blinds at the same time.
Burst thieves usually kill themselves from ret, condition spec thieves have all the tools necessary to easily dispatch bunkers, sorry if you can’t figure out how to do it but it is very easy mode vs the best bunker build.
Not to mention the steal attacks you get as a thief are P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y matched vs each bunker.
4 sec daze with Guardian COME ON!
Chill vs elementalist lol killing their mobility allowing you to avoid all there ground drops, churning earth etc while forcing them on the defensive with cond removal and spike dmg lol they cant handle both at the same time.
A smart Engineer actually has the best shot because your steal is the weakest vs them.

So you play P/P thief, from what I gather, which means unless you rely on your heal, or other utilities to stealth, sneak attack won’ t be used that often, which can provide quite decent pressure if you can CONTINUE to go into stealth and use it (not sure if you have another weaponset with P/D, though that setup is quite bad).
Caltrops on the other hand are not some godmode I win button. Eles can sit in them for the entire duration easily with all of their condition removal, guardians have a little more trouble but they can still remove the stacks several times with shouts or passively every 10 seconds. Engineer seems the most susceptible to caltops because of their low condition removal.
I’ d like to duel you on my ele, see if you could even touch my hp in 10 seconds.

you stomp people as a condition spec in 10seconds? are fighting kitten killing people as a condition spec is impossible in 10seconds.
Must be pro to kill guardians without stun breakers relying on a 4 second daze.

Sounds like warrior, played by someone with basic knowledge about the profession.
We all know common sense isn’t too common now adays and that’s the only way anyone could believe thief class in GW2 isn’t the most grossly overpowered offensive class in any game.
not a single arguement that is anything but a childs angry rant to defend what makes no sense has been proposed to why any class in any game would have;
1. The best escapes including a 6 sec restealth ability
2. The best mobility and condition removal+ shadow removal lol which lets you outheal most conditions.
3. The best mobility with super stealth speed+ teleports and flat 25% run speed with signet, coupled with swiftness on avoid with 5 pts in Avoidance.
4. Plus the highest dmg in the game bar non.
All I hear to refute it is WAHHHH I play thief and it’s because I be best player not class op.

1. Wouldn’t call it the best escape. Thieves who stealth against me typically die when I play my warrior very easily. I sadly don’t get to see my 3k auto attack crits, but they just die while invis.
2. Warrior’s have the best heal for condition removal, as you can trait for it and remove every single debuff in the game.
3. Lots of classes have teleports. Ele’s, mesmers, Guardians can tele through walls and appear in a blaze of fire. Also signet and swiftness doesn’t matter. Either you have +25% or +33% from swiftness. They don’t stack.
4. My mesmer can do the 90% of the damage of a thief, yet in AoE. Much more punishing, especially since downing someone in a 1v2 as a thief really doesn’t matter, as they’ll res in your face. While my mesmer will down both of them and walk away.
Offense in GW2 is defaulted to high for all classes. The skill is in the defense and how you avoid it.
Exact opposite of an FPS, where the skill is in the offense (aiming)

I can’t respond to your post because literally everything in your post was a lie!
you don’t play a warrior or mesmer as your main YOU PLAY A THIEF! That’s why 99.9% of your posts are you vehemently defending every gross class imbalance that the class has.
The rest of what you send is such non-sensical garbage it doesn’t even deserve a reply, Warriors have the best condition removal LOL is my only comment. And pretending thieves dont have 50% run speed in stealth with only 10pts in acrobatics with fleet shadow LOL again.

I swear to god, this post is almost unreadable…
Point 1, i dont know what ure talking about (6 second stealth?! what is this?);
Point 2, the best condition removal?? really? my ele is ten times better at that, and i dont know if there is something even better, plus, thief needs to spec for shadow arts and get a build around cloak and dagger to have decent condition removal (which detracts from them being able to dish out pure burst dmg);
Point 3, best mobility, my ele has equal, better if just in straight line with no verticalities, and other profs got the 25% signet too, i guess anet listens to the general crying;
As for point four, im in favor of reducing backstab multiplier from 2.4 to 2.0 (which would be the same as heartseeker below 25%) and most importantly, reduce heartseeker multiplier in final stage (below 25%) to 1.5, i also dont agree with “cheeselers”, the game is already full of rodents as it is, with all the hacking, macroing and stuff going on. But the truth be told, there is way to much crying going on, and the requested nerfs are outrageous, you guys need to step up your game.

I multi-class everything. Although Mesmer not as much as the others. Thief is just the most fun glass cannon out of all the other classes.
And warriors do have the best condition removal for a heal. Restorative Strength + Mending removes 6 conditions.
Only condition thieves go into acro, in which case you’re not instantly killing people.
It’s a bad spec anyways. Either you’re D/D and LDB’ing all the time, in which case you have a slight delay between each LDB and can get stunned if people know when to interrupt your animation. If you’re pistol, you suffer from the same thing all single target non-burst ranged classes suffer from. Apply pressure and damage decreases immensely.
Better point, you have constantly complained about thieves since day 1, instead of learning to dodge their combo’s.
Even better point, balance means little in a game where everyone can pick up a class and play. As long as 5 of a single class is not a viable setup, then the game is fine.
People will always cry about dying, because as I said, the skill in this game is in the defense. Which means new players will spend the majority of their time on the ground going wtf hit me, as they try and figure out counters to the incoming damage.
Also, only Engi’s can move faster than +33% movespeed.

Guys Fellknight is a known troll on these boards, don’t get roped into any sort of discussion too seriously. He was around more frequently right after launch and just started posting again. If you search his post history you can see he clearly just makes posts to get a rise out of people.
Not a troll but you are a fan boy who defends the thief class in every single post while giving nothing but l2play and personal assualts in all of your posts.
I challenge anyone to check aydunited post history and try to find a single post he didnt rabidly rush to the defense of the thief class without providing a shred of evidence for why he thinks they are balanced. This is what they do to try to derail a topic and get it locked.
I gave 3 logical concise reasons in my post for why no class should have all three of those abilities, try responding to that.
“I gave 3 logical concise reasons in my post for why no class should have all three of those abilities, try responding to that.”
You gave nothing. You just made 3 statements, without any “shred” of evidence to suport any of the “concise reasons” you presented. In the OP you said, and i quote, “The head designer obviously plays this class and is totally out of touch with reality,”, as an explanation of, in your little distorted reality, the state of the Thief. This is ridiculous. And so is your post. And the following posts only confirm the state of delusioning you are now going through, just look at the poor articulation between ideas scattered throughout your posts. They are barely readable.
oh look another thread where “elite” players tell everyone game is balanced while the player base continues to dwindle
If the game was balanced to cater to new players to PvP without much awareness or reaction time (like everyone when they first come to the mists at rank 1), elite players wouldn’ t stay.
Nonsense.
There’s no problem balancing the game both for average players and for elite players, case in point: League of Legends, the most popular multuplayer game in the world.
I’ve seen classes that can get away from just about anything.
I’ve seen classes run faster than anything.
I’ve seen classes 1-2 shot people.
Just never seen a class in a game that could do all of these at the same time,
Reading is fundamental, while common sense seems rare on these forums.
Respond to that with why you feel one class should possess what no other class in any other MMO has ever had.
And CnD is a 6 initiative stealth ability, I’m amazed at how thieves can defend a class they have zero to little knowledge of, the avg thief can use it every 6 seconds to escape and stealth every 3 secs with reveal debuff with stealth abilities. While dealing massive dmg I might add!
How crazy do you have to be to defend a class that can restealth in combat OVER AND OVER AGAIN while dishing out the highest dps I’ve ever seen in a Modern MMO.
the real problem with thiefs, is that most people don’t know how to handle them. Yes the stealth and their evasive attacks are annoying, but you’ve always got options to counter them between those attacks. Try immobilizing them and hitting them to death while they are still in stealth. I’ve had so many times that I see a thief, immobilize them and end up hitting oxigen for 10 seconds until I find them on the ground.
Very rarely you see a thief who is actually good at playing his profession and I always love those fights.
~r24 mesmer (which will end up with people flaming me for being mesmer, idc)
Please, Oh Please, explain to me How you are mixing condition and spike damage in a never before seen combo (against a high armor bunker which likely has multiple condition drops, btw)which makes both so powerful you can “Burn down Bunkers” (Snicker) in 10 seconds?
Do please provide some sort of verification for your list of “acheivements” (Which honestly don’t apply because they’re not in GW2, but we’ll ignore that for a moment). I’m assuming you don’t have any, in which case I’ve done all those things too.
This is by far the worst hyperbole I’ve seen on the boards yet. Your entire bunker busting claim is pure fantasy, or else everyone would be using it. I built P/D conditions back in the day when Pistol Mainhand was considered worthless – every player I killed asked me what build I was running (because they had no idea what i was doing to them), and in a week, it was all over the place. If your mythical build existed, it’d be run by every paid tourney team with a thief.
Go get fraps, go find a guardian on the top QP list, and lets see you burn him down in 10 seconds. Since that isn’t possible, just stop lying.
pre-ordered HOT at this point,
save yourself the money and don’t bother.

I’ll give you the same explantion you’ve given(I’n almost all of your post’s defending thief class) to countless logical reasons players have posted to why thieves are overpowered.
Learn to Play!
P.S. why do I need to fraps something 1000 players have already fraps lol. You Tube much?
Reveal needs to be extended, being able to stealth every 3 seconds to remove conditions and heal is just insane, not to mention dropping target every 3 seconds (talking p/d build) players that rock this Build and think they are leet players make me laugh. No one can target you, and you out heal any kitten conditions on you.
I don’t care about thieves burst, or mobility, but re-stealthing every 3 seconds has to go, it’s just so far away from balanced its kind of funny.

It isn’t that hard to stop them from using C&D, play the build for a little bit and you will understand how these thieves can be easily countered.
Ok, I could not resist posting here, since so much nonsense is spread around it is laughable.
So first of all about my experience in gw2: I have played it since first beta event, currently I am rank 39, I have won paid tournaments, I have won free tournaments, but since my team is no longer playing (extream lack of content made few of them leave) I am staying in spvp or random free tournaments. My main is a condition necro, other 2 I play: warrior (mace+shield/hammer) and a thief (backstabber). Now to answer the questions, even if I have no idea how that adds something:
Have you ever won a tournament in another game for real life cash? Yes, I have won a counter-strike tournament FOR REAL CASH : o
Have you ever been ranked by game pro as one of the best pvpers in a game? Game pros are the people that can earn their living from playing a game – this is a rare occurance in FPS, since you have to first get sponsors to travel to tournaments, to win prizes and get more sponsors. So no my winnings from LAN tournaments were not sufficient enough to live, thus I have never been a pro.
Have you come in .01% in the ranking system of any pvp game with over 10 million players? Most of the FPS games do not have a ranking system for all players, usually there are just tournaments to win. The only game that came to mind when I saw 10 million players and a ranking system is WoW – the game with crappiest class balance since the end of TBC and upwards, the game where healers can outheal 2 dpsers, the game that promotes gear grinding. So no I have not been in 0.01% in rankings.
Now back to thief OP qq topic. First of all I am very interested to see how a condition thief can kill anyone in 10 sec, for example a condition necro would just put conditions back on you, and even if he somehow fails to do that 20khp +ds should last more then those magical 10 sec where you burst and the same time stack conditions.
Secondly: “show us a video of ur rank and how u deal with thiefs please mister l2p” I am too lazy to show a video, but I will tell you from my main (necromancer) perspective. There are 2 usual kind of thieves: a backstabber and a bleeder. Backstabbers dmg is easily negated by stunbreak on basilisk venom+well of blindness or death shroud + fear, also put a fear mark beneath your legs and spread other marks around when thief restealths – they will trigger when he steps on them. This thief usually has no condition removal only his heal, and runs with ~14k hp, so either interrupt his heal or let him restealth and die from conditions you restacked on him. Bleeder thief usually uses death blossom and pistol to stack conditions, so I just throw conditions back to him with my marks or dagger offhand, put a well that turns conditions into buffs (usually unnecessary) and try not allow him to stay in stealth – if he tries to use his heal stealth interrupt with ds fear, if he tries to get into shadow refuge – fear him with marks from that location. Other then that keep returning his conditions and he will die or escape.
Now to address the issue of thief attacked me in 1 sec an there is not enough time to react – it is plenty of time to react, in most old fpses (cs, quake, ut) you had the same amount of time to see the enemy, aim and shoot. No one had problem with that, you either made your reactions faster or became a frag. Why cant an mmorpg have something that requires you to be fast? Should it be as slow as wow arenas, where you had to fight for 20 minutes if you run a healer/dps and meet healer/dps?
About thieves having the most burst dmg from few abilities (steal+cnd+bs) – 100blades hit for the same amount, shatter mesmer can get the same amount only AOE. About being most mobile – eles are in my opinion more mobile during combat horizontally, out of combat that 25% signet is matched by other classes (for example signet of locust on necromancer). About having the best dmg avoidance – you can still be hurt in stealth, by aoe or by melee weapons. I think mesmers have the best way to avoid dmg – they have F4 and sword attack that makes them evade every dmg with low cooldowns, not to mention various stealths. Condition removal – thief if traited can remove conditions while he is in stealth, but necromancer can remove conditions without being traited, just use heal or marks or dagger or a well.
So to conclude my long post – a most common backstabber thief is there to punish people that do not keep an eye on enemy movements and do not use any stunbreakers/blinds/dodges/etc. In most cases the dmg can be avoided just as easily as a 100blades warrior. As the developer said, most issues that people see at the beginning of playing pvp may just vanish when the person understands how this game works, or in short L2P.

Ok so I did my own research and it looks like that people only have problems with thieves in HotJoin. They are perfectly fine and balanced in free tournaments., and people don’t whine about them all day long.
Solution: split thieves for tourney and hotjoin play, that way both serious and smart players as well as newbies will be happy.
Isn’t the thief/assassin class suppose to have an advantage of escaping on ez mode?
Thieves run faster only when they have 25% signet of shadow. Are you seriously going to have it equipped at all time?
Thieves don’t 1-2 shot, they 3 shot people (from full health). And when you get backstabbed with a full setup, it’s a case of… “I caught you and you’re squishy as kitten”
Thieves being out of control is an overstatement. The design team does acknowledge the thieves being a bit OP. Perhaps you haven’t been reading the updates. The fact that CC Charles from the Coordination Community personally made a topic “The thief and its gameplay – Your feedback” Shows their intent on the continuation of nerfing thieves. But they want to do it right before nerfing anything.
For the longest time I have strongly thought that BS needed a more extreme nerf. The stealthing system in GW2 is really unique and it has potential to be very balanced compare to other MMO’s w/ their stealthing system. What GW2 messed up on (as i have pointed before in the thieves section) is the pure fact that they can be traited to be rewarded under stealthed. Moving faster under stealthed is a given since the 2 main concept of stealth is to conceal your character and to escape. But when you regain init faster, regenerate, remove condition during health That’s over the top of the line. Stealthing is a privilege that other classes envy and is strictly only for thieves/assassins/rogues. Stealth itself is a luxury. When you can build a class can regenerate back to full health and initiative when unstealth (w/ multiple stacks of might), then that is just very lazy and sloppy designing from Anet.
Look, you seem pretty knowledgable of the thief class and how they work, but when you make ridiculous assumptions like the Head designer maining a thief and refuses to nerf it and ridiculous claims that you can drop everyone in 10 seconds, it makes your arguments less valuable. Your arrogance shows that you’re somewhat ignorant in some points. Which leads me to believe what that one guy was saying, you’re a troll.
And yes I do play thief. And yes I do believe you can’t kill me under 10 seconds.
(edited by bladie.5084)
I’ll give you the same explantion you’ve given(I’n almost all of your post’s defending thief class) to countless logical reasons players have posted to why thieves are overpowered.
Learn to Play!
P.S. why do I need to fraps something 1000 players have already fraps lol. You Tube much?
You mean you’ll decline to explain how your spec works because it doesn’t exist, and you are talking directly from your anus. If your spec existed, it would be everywhere, literally everywhere – a ranged thief spec that shreds any class (even guardian bunkers) in 10 seconds would be run by every single thief in this game. They don’t run it, therefore it doesn’t exist.
Don’t sidestep the issue when someone calls you on your hyperbole – it’s blatantly obvious to anyone who’s PvPed more than a week that you have no idea what you’re talking about – the only one who’s missing that fact is you.
P.S. – You need to fraps it because your claims are outlandish – I want to see you take on a bunker guard in the top 50 QP with your mythical win anything spec, because you’re the one making the (false) claims.

Ever heard about using dodge/block? Thief can’t use CnD when he doesn’t land the hit which then leaves him stuck with usually 2 stealths depeding on build. Other one is area stealth where you can just go hitting the air, push him out of the area, w/e. Also while thief isn’t in stealth u can stun, immobilize and in general just try deal massive dmg. Thieves are very fragile and die easily when not in stealth. tho still enemies with zero/low condition removal will die during those 2 non CnD stealths when thiefs is using condition build but u just can’t always win

Learn to use your dodges wisely. What else is a P/D thief throwing at you worth dodging? Eating the cripple from a Dancing Dagger might suck sometimes, but dodging CnD costs a thief 6 init, and denies them sneak attack, which accounts for most of their damage. There’s literally no other ability worth dodging (unless you eat the CnD and try to dodge Sneak attack, which is trickier and less effective)
Same goes for D/D thief – if you’re dodging anything that isn’t CnD or HS while you’re at less than 50% (really less than 25%, but that might be a little risky for some players), you’re just wasting dodges.
When it comes down to it, the basis of this game is resource management. Every time you dodge HS at more than 50% health, or dodge a dancing dagger in most situations, that’s you yielding ground to the thief – you’ve wasted a highly valued resource on a junk attack.

Mate thank you for the advice, and I have no problem working on my game to always improve, but I play a thief, and if you don’t think it is a little ridiculous right now with the 2-3 restealth (2 because of culling) then I’m sorry, but it is. I play sword and dagger thief, and I played condition thief for a long time, but it wasn’t even fun, taking on teams (in spvp tpvp is different) just because no one couldn’t target me. You have to dodge at least once to get out of the middle of the loltrops, otherwise you are eating a huge cripple and some good quick stacks of bleed, coupled with a few quick DB (with 15 sec bleed) or a sneak attack, and you are in real trouble real quick.
Look at wild bills video, if you seriously think all of those opponents he has faced, all of them, that not 1 of them is better than him Or even a one of them being a decent player that would have a good 1v1 shot at him if he wasn’t stealthing so often?? Sure he plays well, but to think that not 1 player in All of he WVW vids he has made, is not of equal skill is a little crazy.
I know WvW is different than SPVP, but the same concept applies here with frequent stealthing. Like I said I play a thief, lengthen the reveal timer, and buff us somewhere else, in survivability, or utility, a 5 second reveal timer is not going to be the end of the world for thieves.

Culling isn’t really an issue in sPvP (WvW is PvE in my mind – yes culling needs to be fixed, but it doesn’t enter into a balance discussion about thieves). I can’t talk about what needs to be balanced in WvW because I don’t play it, this is a sPvP discussion.
I’ve spoken about the Wild Bill videos before, there are ALOT of problems with them. He’s generally facing inexperienced players and its WvW (which is NOT PvP). I rolled P/D conditions way back when thieves universally thought Pistol MH was useless (not trying to toot my own horn, but it gives me insight into the videos). I remember what it was like to CnD a target and watch them reflexively dodge roll even though I had been shooting them with a pistol for 15s, because Backstab was the only thing that ever followed up CnD. I fought people who literally had no idea what was going on – I’d sneak attack them, shoot them while they approached (not bother to keep the gap like any other ranged class would), CnD, then repeat. It was like harvesting wheat, people didn’t understand what I was doing, and I was acing 3-4 on 1’s CONSTANTLY. That’s exactly how Wild Bill’s video’s play out – destroying inexperienced players who have no idea what he’s going to do next because they don’t have the slightest clue how the spec works. He’s very obviously a good player, which compounds the issue because he knows exactly what to expect from his targets while they have little idea what he’ll be doing next. Those days are long, long gone in sPvP; players know how the spec works now, and what to watch out for. It’s still a playable spec, and can be strong, but it’s no longer the “LOL, watch me kill 2-3 people at a time and walk out unscathed” build it was when it first surfaced.

my point was simply dodging a cnd or 2 does not auto win. they have easy ways to regain init and the way cnd can be combod with gap closers makes it near impossible to dodge sometimes.

My point wasn’t that dodging = auto-win. My point was saving dodges for CnD very severely cripples A P/D thief, because they rely on stealth for nearly everything.
If a thief blew Steal or Inf Sig in addition to 6 Init for CnD, well, they deserve it don’t they. That’s a 30-45s CD AND 6 init for 1 stealth. A P/D thief is going to need alot more than 1 stealth to threaten any competent player.
If you’d like to claim that thieves have an easy way to regain init, I can counter that any class has options to increase their endurance regen. There’s also block, immune, evade, and blind as options. I’m not claiming you can avoid every single CnD, but if you avoid even half of them (which is not only doable, but should be easy) you severely neuter a P/D thief.
