The "Thief Meta"
I have recently formed a new sPvP team with the aim if competing at the highest level of play. I truly enjoy the feel and play of the Thief class but many of my teammates are concerned that thieves are slightly weak after recent nerfs. I do not feel this is true but am not quite knowledgeable enough to be sure of myself.
So my question to you knowledgeable sPvP’ers; are thieves viable and if so, what role do they fulfill?
As a side note; how are Mesmer’s doing and what role are they filling?
Any info, builds, etc will be much appreciated! Thanks for sharing your wisdom:)
Thieves are far from weak.
They still retain the best mobility in this game, so they are amazing roamers, while being the best boon-hate profession.
Run 0/30/15/25/0 or 0/30/20/20/0 with S/D and enjoy some stability and protection of that guardian you always hated or those delicious 25 might stacks of that HGH engineer.
Mesmer has always been the most used profession in this game in PvP. Pretty much because while Thief burst was nerfed, Mesmer shatter burst is still there.
The build which is rampant (and with rampant, I mean 98% of the mesmers run that), is S/x + Staff shatter. Must have traits are Mental Torment, Deceptive Evasion, Precise Wrack, Critical Infusion. Other traits are of your choice.
The S/D Acrobat build can fulfil the role of a bruiser and offer good sustained damage for your team.
The D/P Burst build is really weak after the mug change (slightly better than necro/war) and imo, has to be played like a “support burst” class. AKA: You don’t have enough damage to burst someone down or zone anyone from a teamfight yourself, so just run around with a mesmer or S/D ele, keep them stealthed, and line up your burst together.
If you want a burst class, you’re probably better off just rolling Mesmer in most cases.

thanks for the replies, great to see such big names like Caed and Jumper especially.
Are thieves burst really that low now though?
in spvp burst is not so good anymore but you can run 15 30 0 0 25 with asassin and shadow signet, haste and basilisk, and in good team you can be quick and deadly.
Thieves may indeed be slightly weaker than they were previously but they are still one of the top-tier classes in PvP.
Their main role, (which they do very well,) is to annoy the hell out of everyone else. :P
I would agree with Jumper’s quote, not so much about rerolling. I am really still holding on for this next patch for p/p reworks and traps. As well as maybe revert for mug.
They nerfed mug to cater to beginner players not knowing how to deal with the burst. Imo; I am still running D/P, BEFORE the teleport changes I was able to spike from 1500+ range and that was some utility I could bring to a team. Spike damage in a team fight, without them knowing what angle I am coming from. Now with the teleport changes It cut that in half.
