Alright, so the match ups in the ToL seem a bit offbalanced dont you think? I know that there will always be unfair match ups, but when a team like MEGALADONG CONFIRMED, with 2 All-stars gets match up with the Number 32 slot makes no sense to me. I know that the people setting up the brackets cant make everything fair and such, but I dont think it’s fair that the No.1 slot team gets to face the supposed “worst” team; this just seems like a free ride for MEGALADONG. Now this isnt directed at MEGALODONG, or Zombie’s cant swim, but it was just a good example I suppose. This isnt some rant or anything, I’m just curious to why there isnt some better match ups with these teams for the beginning matchs? What does everyone think about really good teams getting paired with the “Unknowns”.
(Once again this isnt directed at any team mentioned in this post, they are just used as examples.)
I think the matchups are fine the way they are. You dont want all the good teams playing each other at the beginning of the tourney and have the chance of a lesser team making it to the finals vs a good team. It would make for a boring finals match. Thats why these teams are seeded the way they are.
First seed fights last seed, this is how all tournaments are structured. This allows the weaker teams to be weeded out immediately while keeping stronger teams separated so that their ultimate rank is more accurately portrayed.
If you had only weak teams fighting weak teams and strong teams fighting strong teams, you’d have strong teams being eliminated at the same time as weak teams. With strong teams vs weak teams, you have all the weak teams eliminated first, as it should be.
the ncaa brackets the same way. #1 seed goes against the worst seed.
Also tournies are meant to find the best team, if you arnt first you’re last so who cares where you are seeded when your only goal should be to win.

^^^This pretty much explains it.
At first what OP wrote made sense then I read the responses and learned why the seed was done like that. Thanks guys.
I totally agree with pairing the teams so better teams will still make it, but still, No.1 vs. No.32? I still think it could be like, No.1 vs No.9-No.11. This still allows for a better match up even though the odds are stacked against the No.11 team. I never meant my post to sound like No.1 vs No.2, and No.3 vs No.4, etc. I just dont think it’s fair that these really good teams dont have a bit more competition at the start…If they are ranked No.1 they should be able to beat everyone regardless if they faced No.2, or No.32

So while No.11 lose and out, No.31 wins the match up vs No.32 and advance.
Does this make sense to you?
And its not like its hard to get decent seed, just play a few tpvp games and get top 1000 should get you to No.15.
Those last seed teams never touch tpvp and they try to get lucky for easy matchup. this is what they get.
In an ideal bracket, the top 16 would make it to round 2, the top 8 will make it to round 3, the top 4 will make it to round 4, the top 2 will make it to round 5, and the best team will win. Theoretically you could mess with the brackets to have this happen, but with closer matches. However, it is impossible to seed perfectly. As long as the seeds are close to accurate, this bracket design is the fairest to all teams involved.
@OP:
The “best” team isn’t playing the worst team. Only a few teams are ranked. The others are just randomly assigned numbers. You just got a tough match-up. Unlucky, but fair.
I always hated this type of matching though I do recognize it as the norm. I teach martial arts and when I hold tournaments for my kids I rank them and match them in this manner. (Assuming I had 32)
w1v17 —-— w1v18
2v18w
w3v19——- w3v4
w4v20
5v21w——- 21v6w
w6v22
w7v23——- w7v8
w8v24
etc etc etc.
It still may blow out the mids but it at least lets the low seeds have a chance to not be blown out and embarrassed. Better more entertaining matchups.
Edit. This is the match ups not the brackets. they would be arranged to try to keep the 1 and 2 seeds on opposite end. same with the 4 and 3 etc

Read this after I posted. If this is the case and only a few teams are ranked while the rest are given random numbers then my above post is kitten.
@Epidemix This depends. We try to seed as many as possible, but when it comes down to it, sometimes we just haven’t seen people play, and they’ve never been in the top 1000 on the leaderboards. At that point, there’s literally nothing we can do except seed randomly. Setting up the brackets this way is the most fair over all, even if it does result in blow outs in the lower rounds.
Something to keep in mind is that this tournament is single elimination. Something like double elimination makes the brackets less important, which would allow us more flexibility in the initial matches. However, since we don’t have time to do double elimination with 32 teams, this really is the best option.
