The amount of reflection in this game
Main offenders being Tempest / Scrapper and Chronomancer.
- Tempest aurashare and Scrapper with the AoE toolbelt to cover entire groups.
- Ele / Mesmer with the ability to grant a lot of personal projectile reflection while their ranged power damage is just magical instant hitting with no similar counter. Mesmer GS / Ele Scepter.
Why do ranged power projectiles get such hate? No other type of damage source gets hard countered in this way where your outgoing damage is not only nullified but inflicted back at you.
Power melee doesn’t suffer from this unless you’re playing a Guardian.
Conditions don’t suffer from reflection whether ranged or melee.
The reflection power-creep needs to be toned down or mechanically changed to be more skillful, more targeted skills like DH Deflecting Shot and less stuff like personal based 360 reflection, mindless no skill hard counters are bad.
It just happened recently too. RIP DH. RIP LB RANGERS.
It’s great when you run double might sig berserker with a rifle. Targets dont dodge when there are incoming projectiles and they’ve popped reflects. 12s unblockables every 20s is good times.
That said you’re not wrong that the reflects are way over the top (but what isnt these days XD )
You ARE wrong that Mes reflects are OTT. The primary source of meta chrono is master of fragmentation, and the reflects occur on distortion, which is on heavy cd despite resetting shatters (via Csplit or illSig). There’s mirror heal, but nobody’s running that (to weak heal, zero team support, and unnecessary projectile negation). As for Medic’s feedback, it’s situational, requiring a res, and has a huge animation. Also nobody’s taking it.
Scrapper and Ele though, their reflection and projectile destruction is off the charts. The duration of their reflects is the worst of it.
scrapper’s number 2 reflect only reflects for 1 second and the bubble only lasts 5s and has 25s CD maybe you should stop spamming your ranged attacks ?

Hammer 2 is on a 6s cd XD (we won’t get into all the other things it does)
Next thing people will be complaining about warriors shield.

Really. You’re complaining about ele scepter.
People hate kiting professions. They feel helpless if they are dropped down from a range. So they hate ranged combat, and call it “noob”. But only recent I have seen auch hate for ranged combat by both players and developers. Nearly evert class is forced to play a melee-ish build.
Playing Scrapper myself I really get your point. If you chain it correctly and you’re running Kinetic Battery (When you successfully dodge, your next Toolbelt has no cooldown) you can actually get almost 20s of bullet reflection. It’s actually a little stupid.
On the other hand: 20s is a REALLY long timespan, especially in PvP. If you don’t take that time to alter your approach (usually as simple as a weapon swap) you really can’t blame me to use your safety distance against you if I can.
It’s a general mechanic, coded into the game, that ranged attacks are weaker than melee attacks because the user can be at a safe disance, sometimes even unreachable for the target.
Now 3 of 9 professions have a way to turn the tides in their favor, but have to run a special build in order to achieve that, sometimes sacrificing a great amount of damage just to counter likely only 2 of the 5 enemy team members.
I don’t think it’s all too unfair if they are able to hurl an attack back into your face if you didn’t pay attention who you were shooting at
Every class has a form of reflection/ projectile negation among other defense types. But it is not the real problem. There are tons of gap closers that negates your ranged style of play. And together they bring a horrible annoyance to ranged combatants.
I agree its totally over the top- and almost crazy that reflect can even be shared. I remember back near launch engi had a reflect that was really cool- it had a clear animation and was special.
Now you can have the whole team at mid with reflect up running around spamming other abilities. Ele and engi in particular are way over the top in this regard now, its almost funny.
Really. You’re complaining about ele scepter.
Not on its own no.
But the combination of instant hitting skills ranged skills while under chained Magnetic Aura at range or chained Shocking Aura in melee makes for an insane hard counter to incoming attacks while throwing huge damage back that suffers no reflection penalty.
Conditions don’t suffer from reflection whether ranged or melee.
I’m sorry, since when? Pretty sure my Engineer’s pistol shots, grenades, Elixir Gun shots, ect are still being reflected very well.
Also, in a 1v1 situation if you can’t time your ranged attacks properly then that is your problem. In group combat though I agree, projectile hate is making it very difficult for ranged builds to contribute. However, with all the crazy AoE that goes on in big point fights, I am totally ok with teammates working together to protect themselves from players trying to pew pew them from a safe distance.
While I find my hammer 2 indespensible, while running the reflect you can’t do anything else. So using it up against a ranged attack measn you can’t close range. As well it has a cast time, making it much less effective then it sounds… you either have to pop it proactively, meaning your opponent waits it out, or you get hit by faster casting attacks.
Without this the ranged druid long bow pew pewer would instead of holding me down to 30% of my health or so while I try to team fight be able to kill me with me not really having much to say about it.
Now if you add in the bulwark defense, then it basically shuts down ranged attackers… I personally find it annoying too, as I can’t use my mortar fields. So I gotsta run up and FT auto attack, or stand real close like and use hammer. Then when it comes down…. I acid bomb away (since my defenses are ususally used up by that point) and use my mortar.
If you want to be ranged you should try to build to not be only ranged, have the ability to switch in and out. This is viable for an engi I’m not sure about the other classes.

Yea….No.
I don’t disagree that it’s absurdly easy to upkeep reflection as an ele, however the moment you bring their scepter into the argument, especially mentioning “Huge damage”, then you have already lost credibility. But you went further and mentioned the chaining of shocking aura, which is even harder as a scepter ele if you’re going against anyone worth their salt in pvp.
This is one of those cases where too many things are dragged in to justify the main point, and yet only weakened your argument.
As for the abundance of reflection, it could definitely stand to be toned down, though frankly, considering the amount of counterplays that exist, it’s hardly the most pressing balance issue.

Yes, there was a brief period after they buffed LB that Ranger had a viable LB burst build. It is still probably the best ranger weapon (although it was total crap for a long time).
There are good reflection skills in the game like the ranger axe whirling defence: its good because it roots the player, has a clear animation, and a small radius.
Bulwark Gyro’s toolbelt skill should only block projectiles. It is totally unnecessary for it to reflect considering how much other reflect scrapper has.

Considering how much other reflect Scrapper has? What? You mean Hammer 2? Cause that’s it. You could maybe, maybe factor in Toss Elixir U, but that is a random chance and is hard to justify fitting into a useful build over the other options.
Scrapper is a primarily melee build. Nerfing its reflects just because reflects from multiple players is creating issues is a poor balance decision.
Yeah. There’s too much reflect out there. I’ve had to stop playing rifle engi because there’s always someone reflecting or blocking projectiles. It’s just not worth wasting a cooldown when the projectiles will be blocked/nullified, or worse, reflected.
If anyone does not think this is a problem, I propose a challenge: Post a video of yourself (with a projectile class) dueling a competent projectile-hate class, like scrapper or tempest and winning in a reasonable amount of time.
It can’t be done. If by some miracle you can actually kill a class with lots of projectile hate, I guarantee it’s because you’ve had to resort to lower damage non-projectile skills, or it’s taken you far too long waiting for their reflects/blocks to go on cooldown. In either case, you’d be better off not using projectiles.

So you want to be able to down any player safely from range with nothing but projectile attacks in a short amount of time? Am I reading this right?
Even when rifle was a thing, you couldn’t just used the range AA to make much difference. Its effectiveness relied on the jump shot and the blunderbus. To be fair the CC was kinda useful too for decapping if you popped stab first or needed to get out of a vine.

Shield and flame thrower both have skills that reflect. I didn’t say that scrappers should have their projectile defence nerfed, just their reflects. That toolbelt skill is an instant cast, mobile, aoe projectile reflect for 5 seconds with a 25s cd…. it’s a bit too much. It should block projectiles but gain a light field instead.
Heh, have you ever tried to strategically use FT “reflect”. You can have that one, utterly useless, will trade for something good, like extends poison duration as well as burn. We’ll call it ill wind

I find it hilarious that you even brought Shield and Flamethrower into a PvP discussion. Hey hey hey, wanna include Turrets with reflect shields too, or maybe Streamlined Kits trait. I mean hell, if we are just gonna make some random useless build, we could maybe put together a Scrapper that does nothing but reflect kitten.

The funny thing is that a scrapper only running bulwark gyro (in terms of reflects) gives off the impression of having too much projectile reflect. That should tell you something about how overtuned that toolbelt skill is.
So you want to be able to down any player safely from range with nothing but projectile attacks in a short amount of time? Am I reading this right?
No, no of course not. There are good reflects and bad reflects out there.
For example, Warrior’s Shield reflect is good. It is purely defensive, and locks them into the animation so they’re not murdering you while also reflecting all your damage. They can use this to defend while they close the gap or wait for another cooldown to come off.
Scrapper’s bulwark gyro toolkit skill, and hammer reflect are bad reflects. They allow the scrapper to defend while attacking. See also: auras.
Also, as shion mentioned, rifle was not a pew pew from range playstyle. It needed to get in close to deal damage. It’s just that it relies on projectiles like Overcharged Shot and often grenades.
Look, I’m all for tuning down reflects, cause this helps out my Engi as well. However, this has to be done across the board and not just a “Nerf Scrapper only” thing. Personally I feel the Gyro toolbelt reflect should be left alone, and the Hammer 2 reflect removed instead, seeing as how the Scrapper hammer is one of the largest sources of the Scrapper’s inbalance.
It’s not just the Scrapper toolbelt skill giving players the mentality of Scrappers having too many reflects. That thing leaves the scrapper with 20 seconds of being open to range attacks. It’s the addition of the hammer skills that causes the problems. It has been said over and over, the hammer has too much offense and defense on the same skills. Tone the hammer down, leave the Gyros alone for now.
That’s an amenble solution for sure. Scrapper hammer has so many fun aspects to it though that they probably won’t nerf or rework it for quite a while. I actually think it’s pretty close to balanced: lower the damage on hammer 4 significantly, change hammer 2 to projectile destruction instead of reflection, raise the damage on hammer 2 and 3 slightly. I think that would put it in a good spot without gutting it.
Bulwark Gyro’s Defense Field is poorly designed. It’s instant cast, follows the player, and is higher radius than nearly every other PBAoE reflect, on a relatively low cooldown. It’s also attached to a skill that is already very strong when traited, meaning there’s no real tradeoff in choosing to take the reflect, as you’re going to be taking the skill anyway, but that’s a separate issue. Compare it to pre-HoT personal reflect skills, the majority of which come with downsides like long channels or self roots, and it should be obvious that the skill is over the top. It either needs a cast time added or the field needs to be stationary to allow for counterplay, or both.
Reflects are no problem.. to do damage in melee you got to face the aoes and deadly effects on close range. Magical damage isnt bursty enough to be dangerous on range like shatter mesmer still need to get up close to have effect. This leaves the long range projectiles wich need a counter to. Its not healthy for pvp If you have people easyshotting from a distance all the time. Trueshot ,Warrior killshot, or bezerker ranger need to have a counter like this to. It brings intresting mechanics for example safe stomping If you know the only thing that can stop you is a ranged cc projectiles at that moment. Or for disengaging
. i remember often having to dodge a projectile flying back. This brings more skill and less ez pew pew. Like someone sayd before a good build should have melee range options to. And if one is not able to dodge a reflected dh longbow arrow then one has a l2p issue.
This is coming from a player that plays all builds and professions including longbow dh.
Btw doesnt longbow’s unblockable skill goos trough reflects?

You cannot say this for ranger when every weapon it has has a lower damage coefficient than all classes.
GS on melee? Yea right.
Yes reflects are no problem, but when you get so much reflects AND DEAL DAMAGE AT THE SAME TIME? I do not think so.

Let’s be clear.
Scrapper and Ele projectile hate is UNREAL. This is known.
Scrapper and Ele sustain vs everything else (such as melee dps) is overtuned. Though the reasons for each differ.
In otherwords, for ranged pressure, it’s awful cake cemented in unholy doom icing, with a cheery of gtfo on top.

About competent players?
1) A competent player knows and accept the limits of his/her build
2) A competent player won’t engage mindlessly in duels in a MMOs with 9 different professions and several skills/trait
3) A competent player picks a build, recognize its strengths and weaknesses and play accordingly
4) A competent player knows how to rotate and how to engage only favourable match up as many times as possible
5) A competent player won’t waste CD, because he does not spamm skills off CD and knows other professions mechanics to heart
About your video “request”, your definition of non-projectile made me realize that you’re the kind of player that does not adapt to the opposition, he sticks to the same build and demands to win regardless…
People seriously go full ranged or mele build and ignore the implication of their choices, the role they need to adhere to
The gw2 community never cease to amaze me….
P.S talking about projectile hate, I can run builds like this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vVAQNAseTnsAB9ChlDBWdC8DhlGiKbFuv8T+4T+n/aYXgAA-TpghABAs/QjlBAA
( wall of reflection is just to troll some extremely bad players during team fights
I mean stop right now….if you think that anet will ever allow you to sit at safe distance and pew pew with impunity..keep dreaming; there will be always something to hard counter a rather easy gameplay like full ranged combat
(edited by Supreme.3164)
I have to say that playing a range weapon has been harder since HOT but i still play longbow/shortbow on ranger. I also still play rifle warrior with greatsword.
Some things to keep in mind is that engy and eles are the source of the frustration so to keep it simple. Dont use your attacks when the engy has a circle around him and when the ele is in earth form and finishes a overload.
Ive seen some really good players still using range weapons, its just made it clear on what players know what they are doing and who are blindly spamming skills. Like seriously, some of the vids people are posting complaining about MM. Im like you doubled dodged in a 1 vs 1, WHY??????
Anyone who play guardian hates projectile reflect atm. Quite literally, about 40% of the weaponskills that we use have projectiles including our melee weapons. I blame the out-dated weapon design more than the projectile hate, but am still of the opinion that many reflects need to be turned into destroy. Compare HoT reflects to vanilla reflects and you see how overtuned they are.
I would rather have scrappers phase out ranged damage dealers like LB DH, LB Rangers and killshot warriors than watch em play JPs and kite off point

Compare HoT reflects to vanilla reflects and you see how overtuned they are.
Erm compare everything from damage to boon spam in HoT to vanilla and you see how over-tuned everything is, game is hemorrhaging players in PvP & WvW in part because of dull the combat is now, and the lack of build variety the HoT powercreep has produced.

To counter reflects you switch to a non-projectile attack. These alternate attacks exist even on purely ranged weapons, such as Barrage on Ranger Longbow. To counter the Gyro itself, you kill the Gyro, though I feel Final Salvo should be limited to only activate on Gyro self destruct, or when it dies on its own.
The Gyro reflect was designed to be mobile due to the Scrapper being a largely melee oriented build that lacks extensive gap closers. Comparing this reflect to other reflects and calling it op accomplishes nothing.
Now if the Scrapper did not have the reflect on Hammer 2, then Scrapper reflects would feel much less crazy. This would be an example of an appropriate balance decision, one that takes a small yet efficient step to address both the high reflect uptime on Scrapper and the over-tuned nature of the Hammer.
I actually quite like the Reflect on Hammer 2. It’s a relatively short duration so it can be fun for reactively reflecting important projectile skills – I wish more skills in the game were like this personally. Cooldown should be higher though, just like many of the weapons skills introduced with HoT.
Anet is adding everything to some classes, so expext to much of everything in their favoutite classes.
The game wont be more pleasent in the future….
The problem with Hammer 2 along with other Hammer skills is that they provide a good defense without sacrificing any offensive power.
The problem with Hammer 2 along with other Hammer skills is that they provide a good defense without sacrificing any offensive power.
I think its the bulwarks toolbelt that is more of a problem. A scrapper in trying to get to close range and be a scrapper needs a brief reflect. People can play around it, they can bait it, it takes cast time so they can hit you anyway first, etc etc.
When you are using Hammer 2 you can only activley do damage by being really close to people, half the time I use it I have to choose between using it to do damage and giving up my reflect.
Now take the toolbelt skill, a huge dome with a long time, that basically can shut down projectiles in a team fight for a good chunk of time and protects multiple people. Isn’t it instant too? You can’t really play around it, if you were far and planning to shoot onto point, you now have to give up your position, run over, switch weapons and enter mele. At least that’s what happens to me when I was trying to open with some mortar shells.
The problem with Hammer 2 along with other Hammer skills is that they provide a good defense without sacrificing any offensive power.
to use it as a defense you may have to use it when it doesn’t do you any good offensively. So I do find a trade off for offensive power because the two are tied to the same thing.
